Having spent all of my teenage years in the 90s, it's no surprise that this very particular decade resonates so deeply in me. As a graphic designer, I still think the strongest visual languages of the last 50 years or so come from that time. Bold aggressive attitude is what most people remember from those designs. What they seem to forget—or, rather, to have completely ignored—is that some incredibly elegant and subtle styles emerged from those years. It still amazes me how they reflected so well the period in which they were conceived, taking style construction to the next level. Riff is a natural development of some of my thoughts about the 90s. Mixed with a very contemporary feel, it embodies several idiosyncrasies I absorbed over years of exposure to favorite design pieces, fonts, music, films and other cultural products that share the same spirit.

Full of texture and regal personality, Bell Martellus was derived from a book published in 1475 by Henricus Martellus entitled “Liber Insularum.” The writing style is based on the Carolingian Script created by the Emperor Charlemagne and his scribe, Alquin of York, in the 9th century A.D. This old world lettering comes with new world OpenType capabilities, including swash caps and small caps. The James Ford Bell Library at the University of Minnesota commissioned Bill Moran to develop this font as a means of introducing their amazing collection of rare books, maps and manuscripts to a wider audience. Once the historic script was fontified by Bill, it was forwarded to Chank Co, where we added some snazzy baubles for the discriminating typographer. Everybody can enjoy the antique genuine nature of Bell Martellus, but advanced OpenType users also get extra features in Adobe CS applications.

Ballpoint Catalog is a handwriting typeface, based on my dad's real handwriting, he was a teacher. I'm amaze by its smoothness and elegant, not fully follow the rules of penmanship handwriting but he has his own style of script which make it more human, natural handwriting rather that 'generic' handwriting typeface style. This typeface came out as a side idea while I was working on one logotype. Suddenly I came up with an idea of creating “tuned” version of the typeface, based on that logo. The “tuning” turned me in a completely different direction and in a few hours of haste I was looking at a completely different typeface. A few days later I made this font available for free, since it wasn't meant to be at all :-). A few months later, I saw my typeface used in the menu in one pizzeria. I was amazed and glad and happy and proud, all at the same time. Oh, by the way: the logo I was working on was of different style and even of another stem’s widths. So, this is truly a font of it’s own design. Naftalin has both Latin and Cyrillic sets, since it was used with both.

Bigticy is a typeface with a "new-retro" feeling. Its square outline is tempered by rounded angles. This makes it suitable for a large range of applications in the domains of magazine headlines and posters. The Narrow version has been drawn from a title found in an example (dated from the 50's) of the French newspaper "Le Dauphiné Libéré". For the Maxi style, I have tried to reduce to their minimum the inner white spaces. I had in mind those amazing stone walls that one can see in the antique Inca cities in Peru. The stones are so tightly joined that it is impossible to slip a sheet of paper between them. The Plain version is an interpolation of the two other ones. It is a very useful style since I keeps the main quality of each parent: the weight of the Maxi and the narrowness of the Narrow.

Before typography had 'rules', lettering artists set down designs that have endured as classics. A perfect example is Brenham JNL, which was modeled after an antique wood type. The extra elongation of some characters, the irregular shapes of others and the overall hand-made charm of the entire design makes this digital font the perfect choice for replicating broadsides, posters and anything needing a nostalgic look as if from the past.

Within the pages of an early-1900s instructional book on show card lettering was found a marvelous example of an alphabet that typifies the Art Nouveau movement of the era and served as the inspiration for Nouveau Riche JNL. Angular, artistic and reminiscent (in some ways) of ancient Greek lettering, this design has many unusual letterforms. Check out the interpretive K and R for the best examples of this art style.

Very thin fluid strokes and high speed letters form this casual script entitled TCF Plana. TCF Plana is elegant and functional, expressive yet harmonious, with more bounce and irregularity of rhythm than usual formal script typefaces. TCF Plana was executed with a ball-point pen and then digitised so it would convincingly mimic handwriting by using a plethora of contextual alternates which makes the words look much more natural and beautiful.

This version of Goudy Text is based on drawings from which Frederic Goudy based his Goudy Text typeface. However, there is a big difference between his original drawings (in The Alphabet and Elements of Lettering) and the subsequent metal type version, and my version maintains the greater warmth (and irregularities) of the original drawings. Goudy's Lombardy caps look especially nice when used as initial capitals with Goudy Text.

Back in 2013 I released an all caps font called Rum Doodle. Rum Doodle is a really nice, really weird font with angular glyphs and a unique look. I decided that it would be nice to tweak this font a bit and design a lower case for it. The result is Chew On This. I chose that name for no apparent reason - so don’t make a fuss about it…

Bebedot originated from doodles and scrabbles in notebooks; irregular forms very well might contain a style for an alphabet. Chipper is the work of British designer Andrew Smith, an adorably awkward typeface resembling the first printing of a child.
