During a visit to London in 2008 I fell in love with the square font used on the British car number plates. I was immediately inspired to start working on this font and have been developing it intermittently ever since. Several more trips to London and the project evolved before it finally took off and became Shentox. Despite the starting point being inspired by simple, everyday car plates, the font soon evolved into something fine and very rich in detail. Even though the square genre is very restrictive, Shentox is a highly legible contemporary font with a full range of weights, useable not only as a display family for headlines and posters, but as a distinct, clean font family for branding and general editorial use (Especially magazines). It has been carefully drawn paying extra attention to the details, high end finishes that makes Shentox a safe font for use in large scale work. For example, the curves of every individual corner have been adjusted character by character to avoid the common problems encountered with square fonts (Eg. darker corners between weights or a visually inconsistent radius between the Upper and Lowercases as a result of copy/paste). Shentox italic, which has a 12 degree slant, has been corrected to avoid distortion when slanted. The radius of the upper-right and lower-left corners are more pronounced, giving it a more fluid Italic feel. Shentox is available in Open Type format and includes ligatures, tabular figures, fractions, numerators, denominators, superiors and inferiors. It supports Central and Eastern European languages. Milan-based Leftloft studio has produced a third leg to its hit Etica font family: LFT Etica Mono. Meant to be a coder’s go-to font for everyday use as much as a designer’s way to invoke a certain genre, it is part of a broader and more versatile family that already contains almost 80 sans and serif fonts. LFT Etica Mono’s ten weights carry the same modern, recognisable DNA of the Etica family while hewing to the defined requirements of a coding typeface: space, density, distinct forms, and clarity. The starting point was the need for a monospaced Etica companion intended for technical applications: captions in graphic layouts, small text, confined or predefined space, and overall tone. Flat terminals and counters maintain the colour and versatility of the original typeface, but choosing between the organic cursive or blunt slanted alphabet will give every layout its own character. Futura is THE prototype of a geometric or constructed linear sans serif and the font most commonly font of its kind used to date. Futura, very much influenced by the Bauhaus movement in Germany, was designed in 1927 by Paul Renner. Although being around for almost 90 years, Futura seems eternally young and fresh which also explains its continuous popularity with designers and typographers. Futura simply means efficiency and functionality documented by both its many usages as corporate type (e.g. Volkswagen, formerly IKEA, Vuitton, Shell, formerly HP, SMA and many more) as well as in various famous film projects (e.g. Kubrick, Anderson etc.). Futura’s iconic status was probably established when it walked on the moon with the Apollo 11 crew in 1969. It was used for the lettering of the plaque that was left up there.

Paradise Lost is a 1667 poem by John Milton which mostly concerns the Biblical story of the Fall of Man, Eve's temptation by the devil and the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Eden. It's quite a hefty read, as the poem consists of ten books with over 10.000 lines of verse. Needless to say, I didn't read it all. But, it did give me inspiration for a font, which I called Paradise Lost. It's a good name, even though there is nothing Biblical about this font. Paradise Lost was created (pun intended) using a broken bamboo satay skewer and Chinese ink. It is all caps, but upper and lower case differ and like to mingle. I also included several ligatures for double lower case letters (aa, ee, jj, kk, etc.). Paradise Lost comes with an eternity of diacritics.

This type crept up the sense that it was made in Eastern Europe by poorly trained urbanites from a crippled nation, or that it is the remains of a contemporary gothic (like Eckmann) stencil. The choice of what this type signifies is up to the public. Lately I like the idea of 'putting on' (in McLuhan's sense) a genre of idea that is somewhat different from my tradition's beliefs, and fitting a core category of that toward a teleological/eschatological advantage. Therefore postmodernist/apocalyptic carelessness (which I may 'put on' by using this type) is how I abstain from the cravings of immortality, or more so that wanting it is pointless. It’s stands as memento morí; that I will have to die someday. I have to become less, He must become more. Of course, Interzone may signify a classic Joy Division track from Unknown Pleasures as well as the Cold Warish ongoings of conflicted eastern European life. I considered naming this Lunik 9.

Nawin is an informal Arabic typeface inspired by handwriting. The idea behind this design is to create a type family attractive and ownable for children but at the same time a design that keeps excellent letter recognition for reading. Handwriting has been a great source of inspiration in this particular typeface. By emulating the movements of the pen, we have obtained letter shapes that express spontaneity. A bright group of letters create a lively and beautiful paragraph of text. Pompeijana is a part of the 1990 collection Type before Gutenberg 2’, which includes twelve contemporary typefaces each representative of a particular era. Pompeijana is Adrian Frutiger’s contribution to the project Type before Gutenberg’. He based the forms of this capital typeface on the writing of the Romans in Pompei. The decorative look of the alphabet is achieved by purely graphic means, placing the emphasis of the top and foot of the letters with heavy horizontals and diamond-shaped serifs. Frutiger completed his typeface with the weight Borders, a font consisting of numerous ornaments true to the style of the alphabet. The ornaments can be combined to form different borders and offer an optimal addition to the elegant Pompeijana. Pompeijana is best combined with modern sans serif typefaces.

A handwritten ”font for technicians“ from ca. 1900. Very geometrical, rigid forms borrowed from the typical characteristics of Jugendstil / Art Nouveau. This script is found in a magazine from the Otto Maier publishing house, Ravensburg, which was issued sometime in the years shortly before WWI. The magazine is entitled ”Schriften-Sammlung für Techniker: Verkleinerte Schriften der wichtigsten Alphabete“ (Collection of scripts for technical specialists: reduced scripts of the most significant alphabets) and published by Karl O. Maier. The original copy, produced by means of a galvanized plate, is just 7 centimeters wide. It served as the model for technical professions in which, at that time, the captions of drawings were still done by hand. The characters have been scanned, digitized and greatly magnified. Special attention was given to ensure the ”uneven“ edges, typical of handwritten script, remained effectively noticeable even in the digitized form. As a result, this ”technical“ font retains a handmade touch. Especially worthy of note are the Jugendstil forms characteristic at the turn of the19th century. In comparison, many alleged ”ultramodern“ font types of today suddenly look quite old-fashioned. Maier’s Nr. 21 Pro is suitable for all European languages. It includes ”Latin Extended-A,“ for Central and Eastern Europe incl. Turkish, and even Cyrillic and Greek, too. The font includes several stylistic alternates as well as a number of ligatures.

Zellige is a modular typeface inspired by the tiles that can be found in Southern Europe and North Africa. Made of ornamental geometric shapes, with two layers for improved legibility, Zellige reflects the luxurious and sophisticated flare of the mediterranean spirit of architectonical composition, employing the latin script into very baroque shapes.

Axial Cut is a sans serif typeface (Latin Extended-A), a contemporary and rounded evolution of geometric fonts for screen, but this time the letters are built on an axial axis that results in trapezoidal counter-shapes, joints with reduced antlers and rounded corners that correct optical effects in small sizes to make the typography more legible, and at the same time, in large sizes it shows its original shapes.
