My family and I recently bought a fixer-upper farm from the 1930 and I have been renovating and building for the last three+ months. Ravenstonedale is a village in Cumbria, England. There’s not much to see in this quaint village, but the landscape surrounding it is beautiful. This font was sort of based on a number of handwritten letters by English author D.H. Lawrence. It is not a true reflection of the man’s handwriting, though, as I had to design a lot of missing glyphs myself; it was merely an inspiration. Ravenstonedale comes in a slightly slanted ‘regular’ version and a more slanted ‘Italic’ version. In order to stay true to the handwritten nature of this script, I have added a lot of ligatures, plus all the diacritics you could hope for.

I came across an old book called ‘Studio Handbook Letter And Design For Artists And Advertisers’ by Samuel Welo. Samuel Welo was an American advertising calligrapher, typographer and lettering artist, who was most active during the roaring twenties. Lenox Avenue is my version of a set of letters in that book. It was handmade (just like Welo had done). I only had an ABC/abc to work with, so I designed all the remaining glyphs myself. I changed some of the original (and quite quirky) letters to a more contemporary form. The font is named Lenox Avenue, once home of the famous Savoy Ballroom. Comes with all the bells & whistles.

There's something about the endless variations of handwriting, the tactile process of pen, pencil or brush to paper, and the personal and ephemeral quality as a whole. I recently came across some old handwritten letters from when my younger sister was going to college, and as soon as I saw them, a flood of memories came back to me. All just from seeing her handwriting. That's just one thing handwriting can do. I hope you find enjoyment in my sister's handwriting as much as I still do. An inline adaptation of a distinctive slab serif, Cesium is an unusually responsive display face that maintains its high energy across a range of different moods. The Cesium typeface was designed by Jonathan Hoefler in 2020. An energetic inline adaptation of Hoefler’s broad-shouldered Vitesse Black typeface (2000), Cesium is named for the fifty-fifth member of the periodic table of the elements, a volatile liquid metal that presents as a scintillating quicksilver. From the desk of the designer, Jonathan Hoefler: I always felt that our Vitesse typeface, an unusual species of slab serif, would take well to an inline. Vitesse is based not on the circle or the ellipse, but on a less familiar shape that has no common name, a variation on the ‘stadium’ that has two opposing flat edges, and two gently rounded sides. In place of sharp corners, Vitesse uses a continuously flowing stroke to manage the transition between upright and diagonal lines, most apparent on letters like M and N. A year of making this gesture with my wrist, both when drawing letterforms and miming their intentions during design critiques, left me thinking about a reduced version of the typeface, in which letters would be defined not by inside and outside contours, but by a single, fluid raceway. Like most straightforward ideas, this one proved challenging to execute, but its puzzles were immensely satisfying to solve. Adding an inline to a typeface is the quickest way to reveal its secrets. All the furtive adjustments in weight and size that a type designer makes — relieving congestion by thinning the center arm of a bold E, or lightening the intersecting strokes of a W — are instantly exposed with the addition of a centerline. Adapting an existing alphabet to accommodate this inline called for renovating every single character (down to the capital I, the period, and even the space), in some cases making small adjustments to reallocate weight, at other times redesigning whole parts of the character set. The longer we worked on the typeface, the more we discovered opportunities to turn these constraints into advantages, solving stubbornly complex characters like € and § by redefining how an inline should behave, and using these new patterns to reshape the rest of the alphabet. The New Typeface The outcome is a typeface we’re calling Cesium. It shares many of Vitesse’s qualities, its heartbeat an energetic thrum of motorsports and industry, and it will doubtless be welcome in both hardware stores and Hollywood. But we’ve been surprised by Cesium’s more reflective moods, its ability to be alert and softspoken at the same time. Much in the way that vibrant colors can animate a typeface, we’ve found that Cesium’s sensitivity to spacing most effectively changes its voice. Tighter leading and tracking turns up the heat, heightening Cesium’s sporty, high-tech associations, but with the addition of letterspacing it achieves an almost literary repose. This range of voices recommends Cesium not only to logos, book covers, and title sequences, but to projects that regularly must adjust their volume, such as identities, packaging, and editorial design. Calligraphica was designed because there are very few inline fonts, and even fewer inline calligraphic fonts. The original forms were written with a split pen in a single stroke. The minuscules have a rougher look and the capitals have a smoother shape to imitate hand written calligraphy with more formal, decorative initial caps. The Calligraphica family contains 6 fonts: Calligraphica Regular and Italic are the regular upright roman true italic version of the font. The ascenders on this font are a bit higher than the capital letters--this is standard for most fonts. Calligraphica LX Regular and Italic are similar to the first 2 fonts except their ascenders are longer and reach high above the capital letters--giving these fonts a taller appearance. In my on-going quest for display fonts to be used with my books and on my book covers, I decided I need a squared sans serif. I started the build off of Fiscal, a font I designed back in 2006. I never liked the font, plus my tastes have changed. So, I opened it, made it narrower, increased the x-height, and various stuff like that. I made it much heavier—an ended up with Boxy. Then my brain slapped me and said, "Why don't you make a sorta modern version?" So, I did and decided to call that style Chic. But then I wanted a thin version also. Fiscal was always too heavy and ponderous for me. So, I made the Thin style. Finally, I felt I needed an italic of Chic. OpenType features didn't seem to work well with the family, so all I added was oldstyle figures. So, I ended up with another of my unique families—with two unmodulated fonts: Thin and Medium, and two modulated fonts: Chic and Chic Italic. But, I'm pleased with it. My hope is that you will like it also.

Petale is my new elegant experimental typeface I'd love to present. At the beginning, I was intended to create a bold wide font, I started sketching options and came out with the letter 'M' design first. I thought it may be interesting and had continued developing the style with letters N, O, etc., spending hours on some letters to match the design and my vision. I liked how it looked (especially digits) and added different weighs. And it came out pretty stylish. You may like it to use in magazine designs, posters, websites, packaging, branding, logo, and so on. Petale can grant your work some graceful modern touch with a brutalist-feminine note. Carve is an African font that was inspired by fonts such as Othello and Neuland designed in the mid-1920s. Rather than attempting to re-create these fonts in a digital form as so many others have done, I have tried to capture the “spirit” of the period and emphasize the “woodcarving” style of the font, while simultaneously giving it a contemporary feel. As a result the characters differ markedly any of the original styles and have much less of an “Art Deco” look to them. To further modernize Carve, I have included all the characters required for a full character set (lower case, as well as all punctuation, numerals, diacritics, special characters etc). The result is a thoroughly modern re-interpretation. The numbers (0 to 9) bear no relation to any originals but, I believe, are fully in keeping with the upper and lower alphabetic characters of my font. Carve comes in two styles: --Regular: contemporary, angular African style --Incised: exaggerating the chunky, hand-carved "woodcut" effect. The "in-line" effect has been hand-crafted to avoid the mechanical effect of computer-generated inline effects.

A rubber stamp printing set from the 1930s (or possibly earlier) was the model for Winery JNL. Containing a pleasant serif font, it also provided a few little touches unusual for such toy sets of the time. The horizontal crossbar of the H has a diamond embellishment, as does the horizontal stroke of the number 3. Additionally, the lower right tail of the G curves away from the letter and the Q has a spiral tail. Re-drawn from scans of the original stamp impressions, this typeface is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Vow is an incredibly stylised font, strutting its stuff on the typography catwalk. Vow does everything to excess, even when cutting down: where it’s curvy, it’s very curvy, but where it’s thin, it’s thin. Vow’s regular weight has a certain boldness at text size, but its ultra-thin alternative is much better used at larger sizes, managing to take up very little space even when scaled up. Using a mix of the two creates a subtle emphasis, especially when coloured, which helps to create stunning messages in elegant ways.
