A couple of years before the second World War, Marcel Jacno, the popular French graphic designer who in the 1930s designed iconic posters for Gaumont and Paramount and famously illustrated the Gaulish helmet that first adorned the Gauloises cigarette packs in 1936, was asked by Deberny & Peignot to design a calligraphic typeface for the advertising market. Jacno's Scribe design, billed by D&P as a "virile ad writing" typeface, was released to some great fanfare in 1937, enjoyed some time of French spotlight, and was ready to make waves in the rest of Europe before the war broke out and snuffed its chances at international recognition. However, samples of it can still be found in some specialty post-war publications as an example of a trend that lasted a couple of decades, when Western European type manufacturers commissioned famous visual artists to design typefaces in order to capitalize on the artists' fame - the trend that brought us standards like Futura and the long list of Lucien Bernhard and Imre Reiner faces. Originally designed in 1998 as a 3-font family, updated in 2016 by new italics, small caps and many OpenType functions, resulting in a set of highly visible poster typefaces. If a  text is set in a  good Egyptienne, we can observe a  kind of sparkle in the lines. Slab-serifs are cheerful typefaces, possibly due to the fact that they developed simultaneously with Grotesque typefaces. The design principle originating from the first half of the 19th century does not have such firm and long-established roots as for example, the Venetian Roman typefaces, hence it’s much more prone to a  “decline”. We know of Egyptiennes with uneven color, with letters falling backwards (this often happens in the case of “S”), and especially with slightly bizarre modeling of details. In the course of time, however, it was realized that such things could be quite pleasant and tempting. After a  century and a  half, we find that such Egyptiennes could refresh uniform computer typography. The forms of many twisted letters resemble the gestures of a  juggler: others, rectangularly static ones, reflect the profile of a  rail or a  steel girder – things which, in their times, were new and were observed by the first creators of Egyptiennes. These typefaces are ideal for circus posters and programs for theatre performances, just as for printing on cement sacks.

MARIAMNE is an original design by Alex Kaczun. It is an elegant, modern and traditional interpretation based on and modeled after his successful "Contax Pro" and "New Age Gothic" typeface series. As such, it has generous proportions with clean, crisp lines—ideally suited for easy reading and long lines of copy. Alex felt that the skeleton for "Contax" was perfectly suited to transform the design into a modern version of 'old-style', somewhat reminiscent of German Black Letter. Numerous modifications where made to the body proportions, stems and shapes. True 'old-style' serifs and unusual 'cross-strokes' where added for a touch of distinction. The 'cross-strokes' where added at exactly visual mid-point on the overall heights. This gives the typeface a romantic, female-like quality to the overall design. Strong, yet delicate. Visually stimulating in appearance and function. The result is a truly unique transitional and modern design. Unlike other typefaces, MARIAMNE incorporates uniform stems throughout the capitals, lower case and figures. This gives the design a uniform appearance in overall color and strength. There is a perfect visual balance between inter-letter spacing, stem weights and proportions. The accents are equally large, bold and command attention. This font includes a large 'Pro' character set, which supports most Central European and many Eastern European languages. A ”modern“ Gothic – designed according to principles of modern form in three variations Faber Gotik is a reminiscence of Gutenberg’s first script from around 1450. The heavily broken forms allow further development in the direction of a modern, strongly geometric and less formal type. It should be possible to push the principle of design so far to the limit that a type is created which, from the very start, extinguishes reminders of a dark past. The characters are composed of squares which are lined up straight or in a more or less slanted manner. The resulting corners similar to serifs were removed so that a sans serif type in the true sense without up and down strokes was created. The principle of ”breaking“ was applied according to the historical model. Even the form of the characters is based on the model from the Middle Ages. Only the characters which cannot be created with the principle described were modeled on today's forms. Faber Gotik includes three variations: - Faber Gotik Text — most similar to the historical model - Faber Gotik Gothic — pushes the applied principle of form the furthest - Faber Gotik Capitals —; a Gothic upper case font, contrary to tradition. 555 years after Gutenberg, interest in black-letter typefaces is nearly extinct. They are especially looked down upon in German-speaking countries because they are still associated with ”Nazi“ scripts. But yet, the very forms of blackletter, Gothic, Schwabacher and especially cursive have enormous potential with regard to the development of new advanced font forms.

By designing "Castile" Typeface, I wanted to refer to the Islamic civilization that Muslims had in Spain and especially in Andalusia. Today the name of Castile survives in two autonomous regions of Spain: Castile-La Mancha (capital city is Toledo) and Castile-Leon (capital city is Valladolid). The main characteristic of "Castile" Typeface is in its modern open-end style for some of its Arabic characters such as "Sad", "Dad", "Seen", "Sheen", "Qaf", "Faa", "Yaa" and others. The shape of the characters' "dot", "dots", and "point" is innovative; a triangle with a semi-circle shape. "Castile" Typeface is suitable for books' covers, advertisement light boards, and titles in magazines and newspapers. Its charactersí modern Kufic styles give the typeface more distinction when it is used also in posters, greeting cards, covers, exhibitionsí signboards and external or internal walls of malls or metroís exits and entrances. It can also be used in titles for Arabic news and advertisements appeared in different Arabic and foreign satellite channels.

ITC Astro is the typeface that proves you can get your work done while watching cartoons. “It all started as a series of doodles while I was watching The Jetsons,” recalls Sasa Petricic. “The show's impossibly simplistic vision of the twenty-first century cried out for a font that fit into that world -- a world where everyday objects can carry far more fun and personality than they should.” ITC Astro is the first commercial typeface design from Petricic, whose “day job” is working as a reporter for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Petricic has filed stories from across Canada and around the world for CBC's flagship evening newscast, The National. His reports have also appeared on CNN and BBC Television. Petricic's work as a correspondent and video journalist have taken him to six continents, covering everything from famine and genocide in Africa to the war in Iraq. With such serious matters filling the hours of Petricic's day as a journalist, it's not hard to see why he conceived Astro as a welcome blast of whimsy. “As I began to draw the design,” he says, “I decided that every part of Astro should be a cartoon character unto itself.” Each character has its own baseline shadow (or coaster, or circular antigravity generator, depending on how you look at things). The angular caps dance jauntily, rocking from left to right, while a suite of companion small caps provide backup. The end result is a design quite unlike any other, with surprising charm and versatility. ITC Astro comes in a two-weight family of White and Black.

URW Geometric Extended is the matching complement for the URW Geometric, including 20 additional extended styles. URW Geometric is a sans serif typeface inspired by the German geometric typefaces of the 1920s but designed for modern usability. The character shapes have optimized proportions and an improved balance, the x-height is increased, ascenders and descenders are decreased. Special glyphs, which are often designed afterwards for the original geometric typefaces from the 1920s, are perfectly integrated in the URW Geometric. These design characteristics increase the usability and legibility tremendously. With its 10 weights ranging from Thin to Black, plus 10 additional oblique styles, it has a great versatility in mind. Additionally, various extra and alternate glyphs are designed to provide a friendly usability. Juxta Sans Mono is an experimental monospace sans, an extension of the Juxta superfamily. During the creation of the Juxta script, I felt that the aesthetics and the main idea of the font had promising potential and I started thinking about a pair for it. So the idea of Juxta Sans Mono was formulated. Juxta has several style-forming elements: 45° beveled or cross out bowls, squared m and w arcs and other unobvious letter structures. Despite its unusual and sometimes odd (f, g, m) letterforms, Juxta Sans is fairly easy to read due to its monospace font nature and wide spacing. Juxta Sans Mono offers great customization potential. It has two sets of stylistic alternates — [salt] makes a letter underscored, but keep it in line, [ss01] replaces some of the glyphs with different letterforms. The [case] function automatically adjusts the height of the punctuation marks to the neighbor letter and [onum] is a set of old style numbers. Juxta Sans Mono also has subscript and superscript features, but they are utilized a bit unconventionally — if you want to customize your logo or headline, you can make a glyph superscript and the one next to it subscript and they automatically kern into one letter width. About Royalis: Royalis is an expressive and extravagant serif typeface family. It is characterized by a high contrast and dynamic features in the details, such as long terminals or deep inktraps. Royalis is available in three versions: a display version in six weights, a corresponding condensed version also for display applications, and a text version for body text in four weights. It also comes with all the corresponding italics. This makes Royalis versatile, especially for editorial, packaging, branding and advertising. The wide range of weights and possibilities allows Royalis to be used variably. The thinner weights are characterized by their elegance, while the thicker weights captivate with their powerful contrast. They complement each other like the three musketeers once did. There are many script typefaces but there is only one Scripticus. Scripticus is like a chameleon: In whatever surroundings you put it, it adapts itself and looks like it couldn't be anywhere else. Be it a sales advertisement, a music Website, a comic strip or a journal with complex chemical formula – Scripticus always solves the problem in a natural and leisurely way. And it never makes compromises concerning clarity. But where does Scripticus come from? … From the good old high school blackboard! Blackboards have become almost obsolete in teaching, but be it a black or white background – clear, strong characters placed on the board while the facts are explained are still one of the best ways to make and keep things understandable. Scripticus is dedicated to my high school chemistry teacher who was an expert in just this. While the letterforms come from different inspirations, its aim is the same as the pedagogical aim of my teacher: Combining clarity with a strong personality. Scripticus has a special trick to give it its natural look: Four alternates for each letter and each number plus rotation coding make the glyphs appear in lively melodic flow. In this way even mathematic equations look nice! Scripticus has a lot of OT-features that help it do its job. They are: capital spacing, localized forms, subscript, scientific inferiors, superscript, numerators, denominators, fractions, ordinals, tabular figures, historical forms, ligatures, stylistic alternates, stylistic set and ornaments. Finally, as is my general goal in type design – Scripticus supports close to one hundred languages from Latin extended to Cyrillic extended.

Thrace (/θreɪs/; Greek: Θράκη, Thráki; Bulgarian: Тракия, Trakiya; Turkish: Trakya) is a geographical and historical region in Southeast Europe, now split among Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey, which is bounded by the Balkan Mountains to the north, the Aegean Sea to the south, and the Black Sea to the east. It comprises southeastern Bulgaria (Northern Thrace), northeastern Greece (Western Thrace), and the European part of Turkey (East Thrace). Trakya Sans is a modern sans serif with a geometric touch. Resist Sans is a free-spirited neo-grotesque that embodies both the innate desire for revolt and a tendency towards uniformity. While Resist Sans preserves the neat, minimalist look which is associated with neo-grotesques, it also accentuates the tentativeness of each letter form. The name, too, hints at the rebellious character of the typeface. Resist Sans comes in 28 styles (14 uprights and matching obliques). Text vs Display Resist Sans comes in two versions: Display and Text, which serve different purposes but remain interchangeable and even complementary in some cases. Big News! Tenez has been selected for the Tipos Latinos Biennial 2016 and Typographica’s Favorite Typefaces of 2015! Tenez is a Grand Slam display didone typeface from Plau. We designed it for a branding project, further developing the resulting logotype into a typeface we felt could solve many designers’ needs. Its origins are rooted in pointed nib calligraphy which can be seen in contemporary Didot and Bodoni inspired typefaces. But Tenez’s shapes are organic (these modern typefaces were originally cut by hand after all) – in fact that was the challenge we set from the start: to make a typeface as organic in construction as possible. This echoes some of late 19th century typefaces and advertising, yet we thought of it for contemporary uses. One of the several unique features of Tenez is its unusual Thin weight, in which the contrast between thin strokes and the black area left by the serifs makes for a typewriter-like personality. The italics provide a perfect counterpoint to the roman weights. Tenez was unapologetically conceived as a display typeface meant to be used large as in magazine openings, drop caps or everywhere there’s a need for elegant impact. The family includes support for almost all Latin languages available, figure sets for almost every conceivable occasion (tables, text, you name it), alternates for the quirky beautiful R (sometimes simpler is better, but not always!) and Q (with a nice big tail for that article opener). Tenez pairs really well with our no-frills sans-serif Motiva Sans and our cute vertical connected script Primot.

Grafical is a contemporary take on 19th-century sans serifs. In this family, the amount of geometry inherent within the letterforms has been amped up. Many shapes have received further streamlining, too. All the geometric forms you see have been optically corrected, ensuring their delivery of better legibility. Grafical ships in two different formats: depending on your preference, you can install the typeface as two Variable Fonts or use the family’s 16 static OpenType font files instead. The static fonts offer eight weights, running from Extralight through Black. Each weight has an upright and an italic font available. While the static-format fonts offer a good intermediary-step selection, users who install the Variable Fonts have vastly greater control over their text’s stroke width. Blacker Sans Pro is a complete redesign and development of the original family designed by Francesco Canovaro in 2019 as a sans-serif variant of the successful Blacker created by Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini and Andrea Tartarelli. The original idea of Blacker Sans was to create a versatile pairing for Blacker, parting with its spiky wedge serifs but keeping its dark, elegant character and extending its weight range to 20 weights including italics. This Blacker Sans Pro family did also differ in contrast from the original Blacker family, choosing a more even and monolinear, almost grotesque approach. This choice that favored versatility over elegance left some of the original uses of Blacker not covered by its sans counterpart, and so two subfamilies were added, applying to the same skeleton varying degrees of contrast, from the readability-optimized medium contrast of Blacker Sans Text to the extreme variations of Blacker Sans Display, with its elegant juxtapositions of thin curves and thick black slabs. The original signature details of Blacker, like the hook shape of lowercase "f", have been complemented by new alternate forms, ligatures and swashes, with stylistic sets providing options to easily make logos and headings stand out. Designed by Malou Verlomme of the Monotype Studio, Macklin is a superfamily, which brings together several attention-grabbing styles. Macklin is an elegant, high contrast typeface that demands its own attention and has been designed purposely to enable brands to appeal more emotionally to modern consumers. Macklin comprises four sub-families —Sans, Slab, Text and Display— as well as a variable. The full superfamily includes 54 fonts with 9 weights ranging from hairline to black. Elido (Odile in reverse) is the sans counterpart to the Odile type. Together they form a sans/serif superfamily with a wide range of variations for editorial use. Elido follows Odile’s proportions and matches the weight and typographic color of its serif twin. Elido is a sans with classical proportions. A slight geometric hint and open counters convey an airy feel. Elido’s family structure and relations within echo the conceptual approach of Odile. The arched stroke low off the stem reveals a script characteristic most pronounced in the Elido Upright Italic. This particular interpretation is gradually diminished in the Italic and becomes even less emphasized in the Regular. Busted is the very strange and out-of-character outburst of Bill Troop, a guy who was classically trained in everything, from classical piano and literature to classical photography and type design. As far as we could tell, Bill Troop is the kind of guy whose appearance and voice instantly trigger thoughts of black and white photos, fedoras, and pre-industrial age Europe. A few years ago, he even moved from the United States to England, where it took him less than a week to feel at home and start sounding like a Norwich native. Then something happened and the poor dude just snapped. Busted is the controversial result of the blood rushing to his head. If you know what exactly happened to him, please let us know. Concern, consideration and human interest story aside, Busted is a fascinating thing. It is a set of four interchangeable thick outline fonts where the same letter forms turn from wild to wilder to broken to somewhat clean. Mix them up in a setting and you have words that snarl with a sneer. Life's too short. Take it all with a grain of salt. Scream whenever you feel like it. DIN has always been the typeface you root for—the one you wanted to use but just couldn’t bring yourself to because it was limited in its range of weights and widths, rendering it less useful than it could be. Cocomat has been designed by Francesco Canovaro and Debora Manetti as a development of the Coco Gothic typeface system created by Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini. It shares with all the other subfamilies in the Coco Gothic system a geometric skeleton with open, more humanistic proportions, a sans serif design with slightly rounded corners and low contrast proportions, without optical compensation on the horizontal lines, resulting in a quasi-inverted contrast look in the boldest weights. What differentiates Cocomat from the other subfamilies in Coco Gothic are some slight design touches in the uppercase letters, with a vertical unbalancing reminiscent of art deco design, notably evident in uppercase "E", "A","F","P" and "R" - while lowercase letters have been given some optical compensation on the stems, like in "n","m", "p" and "q". These design choices, evoking the second and third decade of the last century (Cocomat is also referred as Coco 1920 in the Coco Gothic Family) all give Cocomat a slight vintage feeling, making it a perfect choice every time you need to add a period vibe or an historical flair to your design, like in food or luxury branding. The typeface, first published in 2014, has been completely redesigned by the original authors in 2019 as Cocomat PRO to include eight extra weights (thin, medium, black and heavy in both roman and italic form), extra open type features (including alternate forms, positional numerals), and extra glyphs making Cocomat cover over two hundred languages using latin, cyrillic and greek alphabets.

MyCRFT was designed as a custom heading typeface for Drew Maughan's IhNohMinecraft project. ABOUT THE PROJECT Beginning life in 2015 under the name Mascoteers, the project was an ensemble of small-scale characters built from LEGO elements. The challenge was in creating the different figures with the restrictions of existing LEGO elements, while being recognisable as individual characters. The project was initially well received within the LEGO community and with the general public, but was eventually ignored and even ridiculed in favour of LEGO's own BrickHeadz theme, launched in late 2016. It was rebranded IhNohMinecraft as a response to the deliberate cries of "Ih dih Minecraft?" since BrickHeadz' launch. The project has no relation to the popular game. ABOUT THE TYPEFACE The motivation to create MyCRFT was as part of establishing IhNohMinecraft as its own project, by giving it a new visual identity. The typeface could be described as a cross between the ones used for Gears Of War and Overwatch. I liked the boldness of the former, and the italicized straight edges of the latter. MyCRFT was intended to be used in its Black Italic form from the beginning, and was designed around the letters from the word MINECRAFT. Where I couldn't decide on specific characters, I've included the designs as alternative glyphs. I've also included the old "square" Mascoteers logo and the newer "head" IhNohMinecraft logo.
