One of the examples in the 1916 publication “Baker’s Showcard Book” [an early 20th Century instructional book on sign lettering] was simply called “Plain Poster”. Somewhat Art Nouveau in style, but with many ‘nonconforming’ character shapes and widths, this novelty design is available digitally as Free Form Showcard JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

The cover of "Intermediate Steps to the Band" (an instructional book for marching band originally published by Mills Music in 1947) featured the title in a hand lettered multi-line sans serif with Art Deco influence. An online photo gallery showcased a number of vintage and unique signs around Europe – mostly from Germany. One particular sign (“1818-Hoofdkant Spaarbank-1921”) was formed in metal and with stencil letters of a distinctive 1970s feel. When letterpress started with the Gutenberg Bible, the typeface was like a texture. Before humanism, type did not really need to be legible. The letters were rather drawn in an ornamental way. It filled a space. My idea for Matrona was to create a similar structure. I wanted it to be very bold and still as legible as possible. The result was a headline typeface that can fill spaces. You can even fill it with a picture. Or you create an ornament with contents. There are 3 weights to extend the usage to different sizes.
