Zierde is a take on early advertising, small-copy grotesks of the late 19th/early 20th century, and is largely inspired by Miller & Richard’s own range of Grotesques. More importantly, Zierde is accompanied by a large set of ornaments (+200) which hark back to the look-and-feel of the early-modernist arts and crafts movement. The ornaments in, and presentation of, Zierde owe much credit to J.G Schelter & Giesecke’s 1913 type specimen book ‘Die Zierde’. The strong functional uppercase sans-serifs alongside luscious, beautiful patterns in ‘Die Zierde’ make for beautiful combinations. This early-modernist use of grotesk alongside ornament looks bizarre in the eyes of us used to seeing sans-serifs in more formal, sterile settings. The face itself retains some historical flourishes such as the eccentric leaning angle of the italics, the long cross-bar on the ‘G’, the gammy-leg of the ‘R’, a strange ampersand and some irregular terminals across the weights. Bernhardt Standard, which was designed in 2003 by Julius de Goede, is a flowing Bastarde script. Bastarde is one of the sub-categories of Blackletter typefaces. The term Blackletter refers to typefaces that have evolved out of Northern Europe’s medieval manuscript tradition. Often called gothic, or Old English, these letters are identifiable by the traces of the wide-nibbed pen stroke within their forms. Of all of the various sorts of Blackletter styles, Bastarde scripts are the most flowing, or Italic. The first Bastarde typefaces, cut in the late 1400s, were based on French handwriting styles, especially those styles popular in Burgundy. The flowing nature of Bernhardt Standard makes it similar to some other sorts of Blackletter typefaces as well. Bernhardt Standard, because of its handwritten roots, is also similar to Kurrent, a style of handwriting that was popular in Germany prior the 20th Century. Bernhardt Standard is a very calligraphic face, suitable for formal applications. This typeface would be an excellent choice for certificates or awards. The old style figures in the font allow for nice short settings of text as well.

In designing the Calvino typeface family Andrea Tartarelli set himself the challenge to follow the principles expressed by the Italian writer Italo Calvino in his masterpiece Six memos for the next millenium. Exactitude and visibility are translated typographically through the reference to sixteen century garalde typography and its controlled, highly legible letterforms. To balance this formal rigour, lightness and quickness were added by letting the design be inspired by the calligraphic hand, following the lesson of Gudrun Zapf. The idea of multiplicity was kept central, developing Calvino in a range of weights encompassing both display and text use cases, and then expanding the design space with the inclusion of a display sub-family, Calvino Grande, to provide users with a full typographic palette to cover all editorial needs. Sharing the same formal structure, Calvino Grande sports condensed proportions, sharper details and tighter metrics. Johann Carl Ludwig Prillwitz, the German punch cutter and type founder, cut the first classic Didot letters even earlier than Walbaum. The earliest proof of so-called Prillwitz letters is dated 12 April 1790. Inspired by the big discoveries of archaeology and through the translations of classical authors, the bourgeoisie was enthused about the Greek and Roman ideal of aesthetics. The enthusiasm for the Greek and Roman experienced a revival and was also shared by Goethe and contemporaries. »Seeking the country of Greece with one’s soul«. All Literates who are considered nowadays as German Classics of that time kept coming back to the Greek topics, thinking of Schiller and Wieland. The works of Wieland were published in Leipzig by Göschen. Göschen used typefaces which had been produced by until then unknown punch cutter. This punch cutter from Jena created with these typefaces master works of classicist German typography. They can stand without any exaggeration on the same level as that of Didot and Bodoni. This unknown gentleman was known as Johann Carl Ludwig Prillwitz. Prillwitz published his typefaces on 12th April 1790 for the first time. This date is significant because this happened ten years before Walbaum. Prillwitz was an owner of a very successful foundry. When the last of his 7 children died shortly before reaching adulthood his hope of his works was destroyed, Prillwitz lost his will to live. He died six months later. His wife followed him shortly after. The typeface Prillwitz as a digital font was created in three optical styles (Normal, Book and Display). The typeface Prillwitz Press was created especially for a printing in small sizes for newspapers. »Prillwitz Press« combines aesthetic and functional attributes which make written text highly readable. It was originally designed for a newspaper with medium contrast to withstand harsh printing conditions. Its structure is quite narrow which makes this typeface ideal for body text and headlines where space is at premium. For the Normal – even more for the Book – a soft and reader-friendly outline was created through a so-called »Schmitz« and optimized in numerous test prints. The arris character and the common maximal stroke width contrast of the known classicist typefaces (Didot/Bodoni) were edited by the study of the original prints. This was also done in order to reach a very good readability in small type sizes. This typeface is perfectly suited to scientific and belletristic works. Accordingly it has three styles: Regular, Bold and Italic as Highlighting (1). The typeface Prillwitz is a complete new interpretation and continuing development of the conservated originals from 1790. They have been kept in the German Library in Leipzig. It was always given the priority to keep the strong roughness and at the same time optimizing the readability of this striking font. This typeface follows the principles of the numerous and diverse architecture and graphic design works from the most famous Slovene architect Jože Plečnik, and so unfolds a piece of Slovene’s rich, yet still undiscovered typographic legacy. Experimental lettering Stephen Rapp created in 1999 became the spark that Stephen's imagination transformed into the Tai Chi design. Tai Chi is a display face but it could also be used as a textured calligraphic script. Its delightful sense of movement distinguishes it from other scripts. Individual characters stand poised in a vertical Zen-like balance while at the same time displaying an inner rhythm that makes them appear to dance along the line. Rich in texture and variation, Tai Chi works very well at medium and large point sizes. The font contains several alternate letters that help maintain a hand-lettered look. Called by some the "Archetype of the millennium", Verve is a seven-weight typeface family. It features a complete Adobe character set with kerning and fit to match. Verve is the fourth in an on-going series of condensed typefaces that I’ve been designing since 1989. My concept was to create an elegant condensed typeface that would be a "typeface for the millennium," in style and functionality. At the very core of all my designs is a typographic problem I wanted to solve, or a market niche that I think needs filled. Verve addresses both of those concerns, without copying or borrowing from its predecessors. There’s the challenge of creating a rich and interesting typeface with an austerity of line and elegance of form. I’m a minimalist by nature – but I wanted Verve to have a sensuous feel in certain respects – yet have that sensuality balanced by the uniformity of the uniform character widths. Gottfried Pott always stresses "theme and variation," and "point and counterpoint," and that’s what I’m doing in Verve. What one finds in musical composition is evident in Verve. Perfect for book covers, CD packaging, club flyers, retail packaging (especially bottles!), identity design and multimedia. The adventurous can try it in text, but it will give you a headache. The beauty of Verve is in thesize and weight variations which create a rich typographic texture in this font.

Hortensia, designed around 1900 by Emil Gursch for his own Berlin foundry, is a typeface most expressive of the post-Victorian aesthetic that was all the rage in both Europe and America during the second half of the 19th century and up until the Great War. It is a reduced aesthetic of sharp points and natural curves that almost want to apologize for their own elegance, but clearly embody the simple excitement about the blossoming of industry and crafts during the period. This deco script trend would get a re-run for about a decade on either side of the second World War — especially in the entertainment and financial industries — before giving way to art nouveau and big brush faces. Hortensia was Gursch's most popular typeface, used extensively and prominently in many beautiful type catalogs, and a commonly seen design element in Germany for quite a while after its release. This digital version brings plenty of fixes and additions to the original metal Hortensia design, including many alternates sprinkled throughout the character set, and support for a wide range of Latin-based languages (including Central European, Baltic, Turkish and Welsh).

“Chalkís” or “Chalkida” was the capital of the Euboea island in old Greece. The name derived from the Greek and it means copper - bronze. Colonist from this area founded several important cities in the Magna Graecia, such as Cumae (coastal area of Southern Italy), where our alphabet come from. At the beginning, first scribes draw the signs in mono-line, but later on, the influence of materials, tools and the skill of calligraphers, developed the refinement of the lettering. “Calcis” is a family of sans serif fonts, characterized by its austere, functional and clear style, emerged from straight lines and primary shapes; but enriched by the contribution of countless anonymous calligraphers who have polished and embellished their forms over the years. “Calcis” is presented in five weights and italic style. It has good legibility in small sizes, elegance and strong visual impact in headlines as well.
