Milescut is a display typeface inspired by some seminal covers the graphic designer and photographer Reid Miles created for the Blue Note Records between the 1950s and 1960s. Miles made almost 500 covers for Blue Note in this period, including some using the hand-cut technique that consists basically in doing vertical cuts in capital letters and numerals to create a unique style within the universe he created for Blue Note. Milescut is a tribute to this small “cut” 😬 in his trajectory within the greatest record label of all time. This idea came about while I was working on what will become soon a revival of a wood type that I fell in love with when flipping through a Specimen of the MACHINE CUT WOOD TYPE manufactured by The WM. H. Page Wood Type Co. Milescut has two extra sets of alternates that work cyclically when activated in your OpenType menu and lots of ligatures, pretty cool :)

This is Alter Littera’s first original design. The font has been created by attempting not to reproduce any historical typeface in particular, but only to re-create the overall forms and style of classic black-letters from different time periods and places. Two specific sources must be acknowledeged nonetheless: (1) the “Black” type from William Caslon’s A Specimen of Printing Types (1785), and (2) the “Caslon Gotisch” type by D. Stempel A.G. (1926). In addition to the usual standard characters for typesetting in modern Western languages, the font includes a comprehensive set of special characters, alternates and ligatures, plus Opentype features, that can be used for typesetting as in antique writings and printings. Baltimore Type Foundry released its Antique Geometric series by 1883, including it that year on advance sheets for their 1886 Specimen Book, shortly after the firm was taken over by Charles J. Cary. We have chosen to call our version of the face “Baltimore Geometric” because we like the name better. The Central Type Foundry-Boston Type Foundry combine followed with a similar typeface in 1884, using an engraving machine to cut directly into matrices (Gray page 124). It was called simply “Geometric”. As noted in the write-up for HiH font Teutonia, a number of similar typeface designs have appeared over the years. The simplicity of concept is inviting and certainly fits nicely with some of the intellectual theories that developed in the early twentieth century, like the De Stijl and Constructivist movements. Pasto is a fun and charming display type family of two styles with four weights each. 'Print' is a textured irregular stamp style, and 'Sharp' is a straightforward soft-edged type with clean strokes. It is clean, playful, and expressive, with a lightweight structure and fairly aired inner space. Pasto is perfect for display use and intended for medium and large settings. Still, it can be used in smaller point sizes for short sentences or words, providing a softer, delicate look. Pasto has three alternating alphabets that slightly differ from one another. Thanks to the Contextual Alternates, these alphabets are automatically replaced to avoid the same letterforms and textures appearing next to each other, creating a more spontaneous look when typing. This OT Feature is available for all the Sharp and Print styles. Some of Pasto's features are ligatures, stylistic alternates, numerators, fractions, special characters, currency symbols, and a glyph coverage that ensures extended language support.

Espinosa Nova is a revival based on the types used by Antonio de Espinosa, the most important Mexican printer of the sixteenth century and very probably the first punchcutter anywhere in the American continent (1551). In 2010, its main fonts were awarded two certificates of excellence: one by TDC2 (Type Directors Club Typeface Design Competition), one by Tipos Latinos (Biennial of Latin American Typography). According to Robert Bringhurst, it is “an unusually intelligent family of type, reaching back to one of the most exciting moments in typographic history and reaching forward to the typographic future”. All of the fonts intended for setting text include small caps, five sets of figures (oldstyle and lining, both proportional and tabular, plus tabular small caps), many f and long s ligatures, and capital sharp S (U+1E9E). In addition, the Capitular fonts allow to create interesting effects by overlapping layers. This family feels very comfortable in books, but it can be used everywhere a touch of classic & elegance is required.

Roundhand was created by Matthew Carter in 1966 on the basis of handwriting by Charles Snell, an English calligrapher of XVII-XVIII known in particular by his "The Pen-man's Treasury Open'd" written in 1694. The typeface has continuous cursive shapes with oval aspect, high contrast emphasized by abrupt transitions from thin to thick and regularity of slope. Its capitals are often used as initials in combinations with other typefaces. The current digital version of the typeface has 3 styles of different weights. Roundhand is clear and easy to read and is well-suited for medium size texts and headlines. It will work well in invitations, menus, packaging, and advertising accentuating elegance and the subtle nature of the content. The Cyrillic version was developed by Vladimir Yefimov and Isabella Chaeva. Released by ParaType in 2013.

Sprout is a low-contrast sans serif, slightly condensed for economy of space, and complete with 6 weights in Roman and Italic. It has open apertures and a generous x-height for clarity of reading. It also comes with a weight balanced italic, which can be used for differentiation or as a standalone typeface in itself. The defining feature of the family is the taut curve, where the inner counter pushes out toward the outer contour, creating a feeling of tension in the curve. In the italic this shape language is pushed further, with a playful looped g and cursive form of the f. Sprout also comes with Old Style figures. Its range of weights makes for a versatile family suitable for branding, on-screen publishing and long-form reading.

The handwritten cursive by the famous Italian Casanova has inspired Petra Beiße to design a new script, the “Casanova Script Pro”, with a complement of over 1400 characters and symbols. “Petras Script”, the first digital script font created by the calligrapher Petra Beiße, has, for many years, met with worldwide success. Petra Beiße has resided for a long time in Wiesbaden, Germany, where she is working as a renowned calligrapher. It is rare that any of her scripts are transferred into digital format and sold worldwide as fonts. Because “Petras Script” became such a huge success, she decided to release this new design for digitization. Under the guidance of Günther Flake, Jessica Franke enlarged this font to contain over 1400 characters. Eterea is a formal font inspired in the monumental inscriptions of classic Rome, but not strictly sticking to the ancient roman typographic characteristics. Its unique look is the result of mixing diverse typographic styles, but mostly having traces from the 16th century transitional style. It bears a big difference of proportion between upper and lower case, additionally to the upper case having much more ornamental traces. Eterea has four different flavors of capitals which change very slightly in the cursive versions. In the italic versions, the lower case (actually small capitals) changes substantially its characters to make its reading more flowing and is not simply an inclined version of the letters. Eterea is a very expressive font, ideal for titles and short texts of sober and elegant appearance.
