The initials ASM represent the acronym of the Santa Monica Arts cultural center located in Barcelona, Spain, where this typeface, with the same name, has served as the custom corporate typeface since 2008 till today (2013). Developed over several years by the late Otl Aicher and first released in the late 1980s, the Rotis® typeface has become a timeless classic. ROTIS II SANS HISTORY Aicher was a renowned German designer and corporate image consultant. He created the four basic designs of Rotis – sans serif, semi sans, semi seif and serif – within an extended typeface family concept, wherein all designs share a common cap height, lowercase x-height, basic stem weight and general proportions. While each version is part of the large, integrated family, each was also designed to function on its own as a distinctive typestyle. The result is that all members of the Rotis family combine smoothly with each other. Aicher, however, did not design the Rotis family with the weights and proportions normal for more contemporary releases. Rotis Sans Serif, for example, was drawn with just six weights and only two italics. Starting in 2010, Robin Nicholas, senior designer for Monotype Imaging in the UK, and freelance designer Alice Savoie collaborated to bring Rotis Sans Serif up to current standards. The result is Rotis II Sans, a completely new addition to the Rotis family. “We devised our approach together,” recalls Savoie, “deciding which weights to start with, what kind of alterations to make to the original Rotis, etc. I went to work on the typefaces, regularly submitting proofs to Robin. We would then decide in tandem on the next steps to take.” Nicholas elaborates, “We revisited the range of weights and added matching italics so that the new additions to the family offer increased versatility. We optimized the outlines, corrected the weight of several letters and re-examined overall spacing and kerning. In addition to a new set of numerals, with a height similar to the capitals, we also drew case-sensitive punctuation.” ROTIS II SANS USAGE The new Rotis II Sans suite comprises 14 typefaces: seven weights, ranging from extra light to black, each with a companion italic. The designs are available as OpenType® Pro fonts, allowing for automatic insertion of ligatures and fractions. Pro fonts also offer an extended character set supporting most Central European and many Eastern European languages. Aicher’s original Rotis designs were widely used for branding and advertising. With the addition of Rotis II Sans, the family is again poised to become a powerful communicator.

This font family is inspired by printed work made by the Elzevir family back in the XVIIth century at Leiden (NL). They worked with material from several type designers, but further investigations sends us to the tracks of one in particular: Robert Granjon. Granjon italics were way ahead of his time, making some really beautiful signs like swashy ampersands and minuscule v letters. This font also contains old style figures in the same fashion as they were printed, like the flipped number 8 and open forms in 6 and 9. This is as much a revival as an original design, because of their weights bold and heavy (both with italics) that were inspired on some titles. In this font you can also find a lot of ligatures, small caps, diacritics and even a fleuron for each weight and variation. Leidener came up from two books: Constantini Imperiatoris (1611) and Exercitationum Mathematicarum (1657), printed by Louis and John Elzevir on their Leiden Workshop, back in the day.

Brexit now has its own typeface. Brexit the type family is made for being slanted one way or another, to offer stylistic choices and expressions, like for or against, or remain or leave. Because Brexit is international, the letters are made to support many languages. The name is given to mark the British withdrawal from the European union. Brexit is an elongated display typeface in three styles. It is a sans serif with contrasts in stroke and shape. Brexit supports languages with latin characters and ligatures as well as Greek and Cyrillic. The italic and contra italic are extremes that can be used to contrast each other or versus a standing regular. Sometimes complex concepts are best communicated in single words, and the typeface Brexit is made for that and more. The typeface works well for clear messages, shop displays, poster work, menus, signage and other purposes where you want to have impact.

In 1905 the Parisian typefounders Peignot & Cie. issued their Série 16. This clear roman with a large x-height and an italics soon enjoyed a great popularity. Coen Hofmann’s drawings made for the Seizième follow the original Peignot Série 16 as close as possible. The regular font has the original small caps, while all members of the family are enhanced, next to the ranging ones, with old style figures. Also superior and inferior figures are available. The original series did not have a bold version. This was, however, carefully drawn for this digital rendition. The Série 16 and its versions for the composing machines were much used for the type setting of scientific publications. That is why a comprehensive set of mathematical and sundry characters are added to the Seizième fonts. Next to the accented characters for the several West and East European languages the Seizième was also enhanced with a Cyrillic, also available in regular, italic and bold versions.

But the typeface proved popular in many more areas than correspondence. Erik Spiekermann, ITC Officina's designer: Once ITC Officina got picked up by the trendsetters to denote 'coolness,' it had lost its innocence. No pretending anymore that it only needed two weights for office correspondence. As a face used in magazines and advertising, it needed proper headline weights and one more weight in between the original Book and Bold."" To add the new weights and small caps, Spiekermann collaborated with Ole Schaefer, director of typography and type design at MetaDesign. The extended ITC Officina family now includes Medium, Extra Bold, and Black weights with matching italics-all in both Sans and Serif -- as well as new small caps fonts for the original Book and Bold weights.

Inspired by the MacFarland series in the 1912 ATF catalog, Apparel is a typeface that shares similar functional characteristics with Times New Roman and Caslon fonts yet it has its own personality: A great choice for high-impact design. Dossier is a monospaced serif face that originates in Dwiggins's designs for typewriter. It has a soft and casual personality and comes in 8 weights and matching italics, making it ideal for text typography, package and advertisement design. Dossier is an adaptation of William Addison Dwiggins's unfinished typewriter faces. He worked with multiple typewriter manufactures including Underwood, Remington Rand, and IBM, but none of them were finished. He left a number of intriguing drawings which are now kept at the Boston Public Library. You could see in the drawings that Dwiggins was also interested in exploring designs of varied width. Toshi Omagari decided to combine these materials to make a cohesive family: the upright was taken from a drawing of monospaced lowercase for an unknown client, and the italic was from the work he did for Underwood which he called "Aldine". Toshi added narrower and wider alternates in the same way Dwiggins devised.

The Bitstream version of Trump Mediaeval of Linotype, 1954-60, by Georg Trump, a prolific German type designer. It seems to be his best typeface. It has a vigorous and assumed oldstyle roman and italic that is the sloped roman, except for the letters a, e, f. With its crisp angularity and wedge-shapes serifs, Trump Mediaeval appears carved in stone. It is a strong text typeface that is highly legible and especially useful for low-resolution output. It is useful in display work too. Cyrillic version developed for ParaType by Vladimir Yefimov and Isabella Chaeva and released in 2010. Cyrillic italics maintain the main feature of Trump Mediaeval to be the sloped roman, except for the letters г, д, и, й, n, т. There are old style figures, additional ligatures and fractions available at all styles and small caps at the Roman 55. Black style was added in 2011 by Vladimir Yefimov.

Aptifer Sans and Aptifer Slab are two 21st century typeface families created by Mårten Thavenius. Each family has seven weights, in roman and italic respectively, making 28 font styles in total. A heritage from two design traditions can be seen in Aptifer. One is the robust American gothic typefaces, like M. F. Benton’s, from around 1900. This is combined with the openness and legibility that comes from the humanist tradition. The sans serif part of the family, Aptifer Sans, is designed without excessive details disturbing the reading. Its sibling Aptifer Slab with its wedge slab serifs is more eye-catching but still suited for text settings. The italics fit well into the text flow of the roman. They are a bit narrower than the roman and have cursive characteristics. Both Aptifer Sans and Aptifer Slab are highly legible typefaces and can be used both in print and on screen. Kulturista is an unmistakeable linear slab serif typeface with pronounced rectangular serifs. The drawings are based on the sans-serif Nudista typeface, and Kulturista also inherits Nudista’s distinctive narrowed character proportions, range of weights and glyph sets. The italics are inclined sufficiently, and have the same width and colouring as the plain styles. They aren’t just a mechanically-slanted version of the basic styles, as is often the case for typefaces derived from geometrical images — a whole range of characters have their own drawn variants, which greatly strengthens their highlight function. The italics are therefore an equal partner for the roman styles. Kulturista is definitely a good choice for a headline typeface for magazines and book covers. The range of boldness can come in handy when editing sections, headlines and supplements. The typeface understandably proves itself as a healthy foundation for a unified visual style, and holds up at display sizes as well as on shorter texts.

Velino is the most recent of our premium typefaces. The serif version comes in two packages with three widths: Velino, Velino Condensed, and Velino Compressed. The display package contains high-contrast typefaces, with a modern flair—very feminine but with plenty of character, especially designed for fine print in big text sizes. The text package was designed for any running text. Its proportions and colors make it the ideal for text, even in very difficult conditions such as newspaper printing.
