Carefully considered letters written long-hand, sealed in an envelope and sent across continents were once the only connection for distant friends and lovers. Dear Sarah is a type that evokes the emotion of those handwritten messages. Using alternates, ligatures and a complex system for randomization and natural connected characters, Dear Sarah seeks to push the boundaries of digital type. The guiding question that drove the design of Dear Sarah was whether it was possible to create a natural looking script that worked well in running text. Hand-written types often work for two or three words, but as soon you you look at them in a paragraph, their unnatural textures make them feel contrived. As one of the first serious types to explore OpenType for a connected script, Dear Sarah uses a unique system to create natural connections. Often script types rely on one connecting point to make sure that all their characters fit together properly. Characters that naturally connect much higher, such as the ‘o’ or ‘v’ are distorted to connect at the same point as an ‘a’ or a ‘c’. Dear Sarah uses multiple sets of lower-case characters to connect at multiple points, creating a much more natural looking script. OpenType is also used to create variety, by using randomization techniques to insert disconnected characters as well as alternates, ligatures, swashes and ink blots to create a natural rhythm across multiple lines.

An unnamed scroll typeface featured in the 1869 MacKellar Smiths and Jordan specimen book provided the pattern for this font. You may begin and end the scrolls with parentheses, braces or brackets, and employ the space bar as you normally would to construct headlines "in full-flowing draperies". Both versions of this font contain the complete Unicode 1252 (Latin) and Unicode 1250 (Central European) character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

Teen Years JNL was inspired by the hand lettered name for the Joyce Records label (circa 1956) which first recorded the New York doo-wop group The Crests (of “16 Candles” fame). The type design is a block sans serif, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Beware The Neighbors is based on “Personality Script”, a rough alphabet originally drawn by Ross F. George, and published in one of the Speedball series of lettering catalogs that ran from 1935 to 1948. The design is something of a minor classic, and several foundries have recreated digital fonts based on it. However, mostly of these interpretations are very “geometric”, formed using straight lines. Intellecta preferred to create a new interpretation using smoother, curved lines to create a creepy appearance. Also included are several ligatures and OpenType stylistic alternates. This version also has an extended character set for use in Central as well as and West European countries, plus Baltic, Turkish and Romanian. The cover of the sheet music for the 1910 song “We’ve kept the Golden Rule” features a hand lettered and slightly spurred Art Nouveau type style. As an older couple was pictured below the song’s title, this inspired the name Golden Years JNL for the digital font, which is available in both regular and oblique version.

A vintage photograph of the Man at the Wheel Saloon in San Pedro, CA [circa 1895] provided an excellent type design source with the unusual lettering on the bar’s sign. Basically a spurred serif design, the unusual characteristic of the type style is the ‘bumps’ or ‘dots’ on the tops of each letter. This has been redrawn digitally as Beer Joint JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Birch Beer JNL comes from lettering spotted on a European business sign found in some stock footage that was used for an old black and white film about World War II. The name is derived from a popular root beer-like soda sold by the Royal Castle Restaurants that were popular in Florida from the 1930s through the 1970s.

Inspired by the old fashioned Miller Beer logo.

Aside from his 1920s and 1960 editions of Sam Welo’s “Studio Handbook – Letter and Design for Artists and Advertisers”, Welo also published “Lettering - Practical and Foreign” in 1930. Face Your Fears was created using a brush, paint and ink and a lot of paper. Due to the horror-like nature of Face Your Fears, the font looks great on websites, games and - of course - halloween cards.

FF Berlage started as a research project about the typography of the prominent Dutch architect Hendrik Pieter Berlage (1856 1935). Donald Beekman based the design on a great number of sources, but mainly lettering found in two of Berlage s most quintessential buildings, the Amsterdam Commodities Exchange building (called Beurs van Berlage), and the ANDB building for the Amsterdam diamond cutters union (called De Burcht). Berlage is considered the father of modern architecture in The Netherlands due to his revolutionary theories on architecture and design, that would greatly influence many Dutch architect groups, like the Amsterdam School and De Stijl.

This is a fully connected script font, not calligraphic, but entirely designed to follow handwritten cursive ligatures rules as teached in schools. In order to correctly visualize it, you have to enable OpenType features (Contextual Alternates, Discretionary Ligatures, Standard Ligatues and Kerning). Trying to write All Capitals will generate Block Letters writings, since cursive style doesn't allow more than the first uppercase per word, however this font is not meant to be a Block Letters font. Using specific type combinations will generate special glyphs. All of these features are intended to reproduce a classic schoolboy or schoolgirl notebook.

Law Italic was designed as an imitation of a formal style of penmanship used in legal documents. It has a more pronounced angle than standard italics. It is intended to be used by itself but can be combined with other faces to suit a designer's inclination. Historically, this face was once used by Bruce Rogers strictly for headings.

When drawing a new font, there is a time when the final form is found – almost – but the curves are not slick and clean yet, that's what I call the "raw" form. Raw – no sweeteners added! In this family I tried to redefine this moment in type development for the eternally beautiful "Franklin Gothic". I call the design "Franklin Gothic Raw", not to be confounded with "rough". The family can be used like any good normal typeface, you hardly see any difference to a conventionally cut "Franklin Gothic" in small sizes. The charm of the design becomes obvious the bigger it becomes, then it enhances your design with its imperfections in the outline. "Franklin Gothic Raw" is therefore an extremely versatile family. I created the cuts, that I considered necessary for the seasoned designer who knows what he's doing. Enjoy!
