ITC Aspera is the product of graphic experimentation. Olivera Stojadinovic, who designed the face, recalls, Over the last 15 years, I have made several small prints using Cyrillic characters. Often, I made my first sketches with a special pointed brush which was difficult to manipulate well, but once tamed, gave me interesting results." Stojadinovic decided to see if she could reproduce the unique brush quality in digital form. "The idea was to preserve the look of strokes made by my brush, so I kept the scanned shapes as close as possible to the originals, making interventions just to maintain consistent proportions, slope and weight." While this typeface is not a connecting script, Stojadinovic did create a number of letters, such as the 'o' and 's' that are natural connecting characters. She also drew a set of ligatures and matching ornaments to accompany the design."

The 1928 logotype for Sertal Toiletries consisted of a stylized woman's head, a very snaky S, and five fine, fat deco caps spelling out the rest of the brand name. From these five clues, designer Nick Curtis divined the rules" of the typeface and drew a complete alphabet, including a lower case. The result: ITC Scram Gravy. The finished product could be described as Bodoni on steroids. Tight curls in characters like the 'm,' 'r' and 'y' soften the lower case and give the design a light-hearted flavor. ITC Scram Gravy takes its name from one of many running gags in the screwball comic strip "Smokey Stover," which had folks alternately splitting their sides and scratching their heads from 1935 to 1973. Those familiar with Bill Holman's strip will recall Smokey's car, the Foomobile, and one of his famous nonsense declarations: "No foo-ling, that scram gravy ain't wavy.""

Bigticy is a typeface with a "new-retro" feeling. Its square outline is tempered by rounded angles. This makes it suitable for a large range of applications in the domains of magazine headlines and posters. The Narrow version has been drawn from a title found in an example (dated from the 50's) of the French newspaper "Le Dauphiné Libéré". For the Maxi style, I have tried to reduce to their minimum the inner white spaces. I had in mind those amazing stone walls that one can see in the antique Inca cities in Peru. The stones are so tightly joined that it is impossible to slip a sheet of paper between them. The Plain version is an interpolation of the two other ones. It is a very useful style since I keeps the main quality of each parent: the weight of the Maxi and the narrowness of the Narrow.

A revival of sorts, Freaky Frog BF is modeled after an 1887 design from Central Type Foundry, called Grimaldi. Much warmth and charm have been instilled into the original design through among other means, reworked contours and serifs. Contours are smoothened, liberated from its roughness, while serifs have become somewhat concave. Verticals and horizontals appear to "swell" owed in part to flared shapes. The overall effect, I believe, is one of pure typographic endearment.

In the heyday of "Tin Pan Alley", a song plugger was one whose job it was to bring a publisher's song to the attention of performers, show producers and radio station executives; the forerunner of the promotion man who visited disk jockeys with new record releases in the hopes of getting them played on the air. Song Plugger JNL was based on hand lettering spotted on some late-1920s-early 1930s sheet music.

The letterforms of this face represent a "subtraction" of two different faces by weight, style, and shape -- one from another. The shapes of TM Miniature Italic are subtracted from FreeSet Bold with subsequent deconstruction. Though the spots may look amorphous they create images of both external and internal. At the same time none of them is explicit. The alphabet is lower case only. Designed by Boris Popov and licensed by ParaType in 2002 .

Nova Caere is a typical urban calligraphy, gestural with its fast lines, with short and slightly noticeable ascender and descender traits. Condensed lower case and rounded capital letters are quite similar in height. Nova Caere has been studied for alternating upper and lower case inside the words of the text, so as to reinforce their expressive content. Stylistic variations that combine particular couples of letters have been developed, as well as some descender traits have been highlighted that can be employed to characterize words and phrases.

Croog is a rounded geometric monoline typeface, built in three weights with true italics. Rambla Alt is a variation of Rambla, which has certain modifications without altering its main structure (Rambla is also available in Myfonts). For this reason Rambla Alt is great when used together with Rambla. Rambla Alt is a humanist sans for medium-long texts. It’s slightly condensed, with a generous x-height and short ascender/descenders. Its proportions have the objective of gaining space in height and width. It’s elegant in large sizes and legible at the same time, with a lot of rhythm in small sizes.

An old book found at a Paris bouquiniste contained samples of the typeface “Caractère de finance,” a bâtarde design by 18th century typefounder Pierre Simon Fournier. Rather than revive the type, Kanna Aoki decided to reinvent it, using a felt pen to achieve a rustic, handwritten quality, departing from the 18th century model as she saw fit. MVB Chanson d'Amour conveys a soulful elegance that stops short of the ostentatious, overwrought found in many formal scripts. It is lovely and sweet, but never saccharine.

Jana Thork is a synthesis of stone engraved capital letterforms and uncial and half-uncial calligraphic styles. The idea of the typeface designer Ricardo Esteves was to seek for the limits between our uppercase and lowercase mental concepts. Vin (translated from Ukrainian as “he”) is a superfamily consisting of three robust typefaces with pronounced vertical stems and rounded corners. Rossika is a four-style typeface designed by Oleg Karpinsky in 2002-2004 for the ParaType company. The general design and some letterforms were borrowed from antique Russian typefaces of XV-XVIII centuries. For example, the upper Cyrillic N has a diagonal stem, a tail of Ц character is attached in the center unlike major contemporary designs. Some characters have alternatives. Probably as a reaction to the pragmatism of modernist design, the seventies saw an explosion of buoyant, vivacious typography. Psychedelia fueled a return to the melting, lush shapes of Art Nouveau while Pop culture embraced the usage of funky, joyful lettering for advertising, product design and tv titling. New low-cost technologies like photo-lettering and rub-on transfer required new fonts to be expressive rather than legible, pushing designers to produce, bubbly, high-spirited masterpieces, where geometric excess and calligraphic inventions melted joyfully. Freitag is Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini's homage to this era and its typography. His starting point was the design of a heavy sans serif with humanist condensed proportions, flared stems and reverse contrast, that generated both the main family, and a variant display subfamily. The main typeface family slowly builds the tension and design exuberance along the weight axis - a bit like our desire for the weekend increases during the week. In Light and Medium weights the font shows a more controlled, medium-contrast design, tightly spaced for maximum display effect.
