Almost a half of a millennium after being mistaken for the original 4th century Gothic alphabet and falsely labeled "barbaric" by the European Renaissance, the blackletter alphabet was still flourishing exclusively in early 20th century Germany, not only as an ode to Gutenberg and the country's rich printing history, but also as a continuous evolution, taking on new shapes and textures influenced by almost every other form of alphabet available. Blackletter would continue to go strong in Germany until just before the second World War, when it died a political death at the height of its hybridization. For almost 50 years after the war, blackletter was very rarely used in a prominent manner, but it continued to be seen sparely in a variety of settings, almost as a subliminal reminder of western civilization's first printed letters; on certificates and official documents of all kinds, religious publications, holiday cards and posters, to name a few. In the early 21st century, blackletter type has been appearing sporadically on visible media, but as of late 2005, it is not known how long the renewed interest will last, or even whether or not it will catch on at all. The last few years before World War II were arguably the most fascinating and creative in modern blackletter design. During those years, and as demonstrated with the grid-based Leather font, the geometric sans serif was influencing the blackletter forms, taking them away from their previous Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) hybridizations. Blackhaus is a digitization and elaborate expansion of a typeface called Kursachsen Auszeichnung, designed in 1937 by Peterpaul Weiss for the Schriftguss foundry in Dresden. This is one of very few designs from that time attempting to infuse more Bauhaus than Jugendstil into the Blackletter forms. This is why we used a concatenation of the words blackletter and Bauhaus to name this face. The result of injecting Bauhaus elements into blackletter turned out to be a typeface that is very legible and usable in modern settings, while at the same time harking back to the historical forms of early printing. The original 1937 design was just one typeface of basic letters and numbers. After digitizing and expanding it, we developed a lighter version, then added a few alternates to both weights. The Rough style came as a mechanically-grunged afterthought, due to current user demand for such treatment. Having the flexibility of 2 weights and many alternates of a blackletter typeface is not a very common find in digital fonts. More specifically, having the flexibility of 2 weights and alternates of a 20th century blackletter typeface is almost unheard of in digital fonts. So the Blackhaus family can be quite useful and versatile in an imaginative designer's hands.

Boris is my son: he was born on January 7th and he is as cute as can be. Boris Brush font is a very loud, very useful brush typeface, which I created using some fine-haired brushes and black paint. It is all caps, but lower and upper case are different and can be freely interchanged. Comes with all the diacritics you need.

Arioso was a part of the 1990 program Type before Gutenberg, which included the work of twelve contemporary font designers and represented styles from across the ages. The calligraphic style of Arioso stems from an early form of Old Face developed in the 14th and 15th centureis in Italy. It is a mixture of Roman capitals and Carolingian lower case.

"Hola Easter" is a special Easter display font. This font is very unique with the rabbit ears character on the letters. Equipped with uppercase letters, lowercase letters, uppercase rabbit ears characters, lowercase rabbit ears characters, numerals, punctuations, multilingual support. This font has been specially designed, making it easy to use. The procedure for using fonts is found in the 6th preview.

The design of Concert Series JNL is based on hand-lettering for a 1930s-era WPA (Works Progress Administration) poster for the Federal Music Project of New York City’s symphony concerts. Held every Sunday at the Theater of Music [located at 254 West 54th Street], the admission in those Depression-era days was 25 cents and 60 cents, with all seats reserved.

Another rebirth: Verdaguera. The all time Catalan people's choice. Now with a complete set of characters that covers a wide range of latin alphabet languages. Catalan included, of course.

Bubbles is a fun alphabet with lots of nice bold areas, so it'll work great in colors or as a simple headline. Bubbles is extra nice in larger sizes.

A bold, handmade stencil alphabet from the book “Lettering” by Harry B. Wright (1950) served as the model for Obscure Stencil JNL – available in both regular and oblique versions.

Butcher is a Rough font with 2 styles, a medium and a black to play with the weights, it contains the Greek and Cyrillic alphabet, special for action titles

Happy-Go-Lucky is my interpretation of an antique typeface of the nineteenth century. The font includes upper and lowercase alphabets, numbers, punctuation, accented characters, symbols, and miscellaneous characters.

Fancy Antique Display is a uppercase display font inspired by French decorative alphabets from the 1940's and 1950's. Perfect for headlines, logos and everything above the body.

The Symcaps Vario X1 typeface is a monospaced design created to give optically symmetrical message forms. This all-caps alphabet provides two styles of capital letters plus numbers 1-0.

Maître d' Stencil JNL is based on an alphabet example found in the 1949 French lettering book “Album de Lettres Arti”, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Penmanshift JNL by Jeff Levine is actually a semiscript - a vertical text font with the curved lines of a script alphabet, but the look and feel of a poster letter.

Bullish is a clean, contemporary, geometric font family. There are 12 fonts in the Bullish family, Light, Medium and Bold. Each with a lower case, small caps, lower case oblique and small caps oblique. The small caps versions have small caps in place of the lower case alphabets. The lower case and small caps versions have the same uppercase alphabet, numbers, punctuation, symbols and miscellaneous characters. Ornes is inspired by the runic alphabet with ornamentation based on the woodcarvings of the Urnes Stave Church (Norway), an old wooden church from approximately 1150 CE. The woodcarvings and their symbolism reach back to the pre-Christian era. The Ornes Pro styles each contain the runic alphabet, ornamented caps, small caps, ornamented small caps and other pro OpenType features (as shown on the "Pro" tab). Ornes Ornamented Rustic Pro features a subtle uneven lowercase, but does not include a set of regular uppercase characters.

Hebrew alphabets contain 22 Hebrew letters along with five final letters. These final letters are automatically activated when used in Applications such as Apple Pages® and MicroSoft Word®. Some alternate hebrew letters have been added. Pageantry Hebrew letters do not contain cantillation marks very much used in everyday modern Hebrew accompanied with the complete latin alphabet. Quite simply, a classic country sampler alphabet with a sorry-I-couldn't-help-myself name. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin, 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan).

A 1949 piece of piano solo sheet music entitled "Playing Jacks" contained the title beautifully hand-lettered in a stencil-like alphabet. Finery JNL is the digital version of this design.

Display Robust is a display font not intended for text use. It was designed specifically for display, headline, logotype, branding, and similar applications. Display Robust has an uppercase alphabet, numbers, and punctuation.

Personal Note JNL gets its inspiration from a semi-calligraphic pen alphabet found in the 1960 edition of the Speedball® lettering textbook and is offered in both regular and oblique versions.

Firefly was designed by Miranda Hopper during her time in Patrick Griffin's type design class of 2010 at Humber. It is a light, narrow alphabet that works well in casual, leisurely design.

Medieval (Latinised) Futhark After the arrival of Christianity in Scandinavia, the Runic alphabet was Latinised and was used occasionally, mainly for decoration, until 1850. This version is the latin runic script version.
