Occam is an informal calligraphic script face. The letter forms were drawn and constructed rather than penned or brushed but reflect a definite flat pen influence. The ascenders and descenders incorporate an abstract implied loop form. Some curves that would normally be round are pointed and some transitions that would normally be sharp and pointed have been made round. A few exit strokes curve back instead of moving up and out for a little different look. This font could be put to good use as a contrasting style combined with sans and serif faces in applications such as newsletters, brochures, invitations and annual reports. It could be used for heads, subheads, pull quotes, drop caps and as a title font for covers.

Marita combines sternness with swing and, from this, develops its own, unique elegance. This makes Marita quite versatile, also and especially for headline settings. The name Type Warmers JNL traces its lineage to small catalog booklets issued by Indianapolis' Cobb Shinn for his line of letterpress cuts; of which a few can be found included within this typeface. Presumably type could "warm up to" these stock illustrations and work hand-in-hand to deliver the message, hence the "Type Warmers" sobriquet. Originally known for illustrating many attractive and comical postcards of the early 1900s, Shinn moved into the field of purchasing stock art and redistributing them as electrotypes or "cuts", the predecessor to today's digital clip art. Tatline was intended to be a fun side project that developed into something cool and rather unprecedented. What does a 1932 movie about a love affair between a circus' trapeze artist and a sideshow "little person" have to do with the 1960s counter-culture? They both share some commonalities. The title card for Tod Browning's "Freaks" inspired the lettering design for Hippie Freak JNL. It's in a retro style that was embraced by the youth movement that had its epicenter in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco. Circus performers with birth defect abnormalities were displayed in what was referred to as "freak shows"; while young men with long hair and beards who sought peace, love and an end to the war in Vietnam were commonly referred to as "hippie freaks". Some time ago I bought my smallest book ever: Kate Greenaway’s Alphabet* 57 x 72 mm. I thought it was the sweetest little book I had ever seen. Not knowing about the fame of the designer Kate Greenaway (1846-1901), I put it in some dark drawer and looked at it from time to time. Kate’s books were all outstanding successes in English publishing history; she was an icon of the Victorian era. Some of those books are still being reprinted today. This little gem I had accidentally acquired has become very rare and I have not found any reprints yet. So I thought maybe I could adapt her drawings for use on today’s computers. I ventured to redraw her delicate illustrations, blowing them up 300 percent, being forced to simplify them without losing her touch. It took quite some time! While redrawing them, I discovered that she most certainly drew them in at least three different sessions as well. Then I scanned my drawings and put them in a font. To make the font more usable, I added the ten numerals in Kate’s style; the original does not have those. I hope she would have liked my adaptations. Gutter Pigeon is not your every-day Ransom-kind-of-font! The prices of making it was really simple: I only used my phone and computer. I took pictures of letter from newspapers, magazines, bookcovers, candybars, movieposters, roadsigns, etc. In the beginning, It was easy to find new letters. But as I had the initial letters, it became quite a search for the missing letters. Not a hard job, you may think - but this font has 8 different versions of each letter! That's 26 lowercase glyphs and 26 uppercase glyphs...8 times! That's more than 400 glyphs! And on top of that comes numbers and punctuation! Go crazy with Gutter Pigeon! Actually, that is not very hard, because the font automatically cycles through the 8 different versions of each letter while you type! Upper- and lowercase in a wild mix!

My daily challenge is how to get my kids out of bed, feed them breakfast, get them to dress, wash and pack their school bags and drop them off at school before the bell rings. Daily Challenge font is none of the above: it is a clean cut, 100% handmade, all caps font. The only challenge here is how to adapt your design so it fits this font perfectly… ;-)

Wakandan is an alphabet designed by Hannah Beachler, and used in the 2018 film Black Panther. It is based on Nsibidi symbols. Another script used in the film was developed by Oluwaseun Osewa and inspired by Nsibidi, a system of symbols used in southeastern Nigeria between about 400 and 1400 AD. I've been working on a usable sans serif for body copy since the mid-1990s (though I certainly did not know it at the time). This one works well. It started life back in the mists of time as a scan of an old German font by Carl Fahrenwaldt. It was developed fully as a synergized serif with strong traditional roots and released as Bergsland Pro. Now it finally makes it to where I was headed all along as a sans text font. This is a well modulated humanist, sans serif font family with many OpenType features and over 600 characters: Caps, lower case, small caps, ligatures, swashes, small cap figures, old style figures, numerators, denominators, accents characters, ordinal numbers, and so on. It is designed for text use in body copy. But it also works very well for elegantly stylized display.
