Here’s another gem pulled from the pages of one of the many editions of Pen and Brush Lettering by the Blandford Press. An undeniably Art Deco font with some unexpected twists and turns, this typeface is based on a design originally called "Dignity Roman", a product of the fevered imagination of the rather unconventional 30s lettering artist Alphonse E. The 1920s film production company Tiffany-Stahl often used a hand lettered Art Nouveau novelty type design with thick horizontal lines in their various film release ads. One such ad was in the August 11, 1929 of “The Film Daily”. This served as the model for Nouveau Event JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

This typeface is an amalgam of two cut-paper typefaces, as presented by Margaret Shepherd in her book, Calligraphic Alphabets Made Easy. Font Cervo is the younger sister of Kapra. It is characterized by eight different varieties – lower and uppercase characters and in contrast to Kapra is “slimmed” version (from Medium to Thin). It is inspired by a You And Me Monthly published by National Magazines Publisher RSW „Prasa” that appeared from May 1960 till December 1973 in Poland.

French Script font is based on script handwriting and engraving used in formal announcements and invitations in general, and specifically on a 1905 ATF face named Typo Upright," by Morris Fuller Benton. A British boxing film from 1953 called “The Square Ring” had its titles and credits hand lettered in a slab serif type style commonly referred to as “Egyptian”. Other familiar type fonts which share this influence are Karnak, Stymie and Beton. Sporting Event JNL was modeled from the film’s titles and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The 1920 edition of “How to Paint Signs and Sho’ Cards” by E. C. Matthews offered a number of examples of then-modern lettering styles for sign painters and show card writers. DuBois JNL is based on hand lettering designed by Albert DuBois of New York City, and originally titled "Round Block". His design was found in an old sign painters' design book from the early 1900s and has been translated to digital form by Jeff Levine. All of the quirks and charm of hand lettering have remained.

Stadiona; it is a modern display font inspired by the functional and simple solutions of the 1920s design collective Bauhaus and blended with contemporary sans serif fonts. All letters are based on the stylized stadium of geometric form. To respond different and creative usage needs; it is presented in four different versions as Basic, Alternates, Inktrap and Shadow.

Mekanik font is the work of British artist David Quay and as the name suggests, this geometric typeface reflects the simplicity of mechanical sans serif type design. It is an echo of the type styles developed by the Soviet Constructivists in the early 1920s. Mekanik font is excellent for use where a feeling of precision and strength is desired.

ITC Freddo is the work of New York designer James Montalbano and was inspired by a sign lettering manual from the 1930s. Montalbano liked the character shapes illustrated in this manual but found many of the proportions odd. So he reinterpreted them to produce capitals and lower case letters which, according to today's standards, better complement one another.

Zenia, offered in regular and bold weights is a homage to the streamline era of the later 1930s. It's a distinctive display family, glyphic yet still intuitive and easy to read. Use it anywhere you want that 30's streamlined feel, or perhaps in science fiction inspired work particularly those that have a 'past inspired future' feel...

This snappy little number was inspired by a PLINC typeface by Murray Fuchs called Erwin, which has been redrawn and improved for the digital age. Use Contextual Alternates to "bounce" the text, and Discretionary Ligatures to enable some interlocking letter combinations. This loopy offering is patterned after a typeface from the 1888 specimen book from the Central Type Foundry of St. Louis, called simply "Spiral". The ragged contours on the original face have been smoothed out, but it still is an attention-getter. Modakshar was inspired by traditional Indic handwriting scripts which ‘hang’ from a common upper horizontal bar. Adapting this motif to Latin letterforms was challenging. The typeface was first conceived in the 1970's as a design project in school. The current digital design was completed in 2002. Basic motif was inspired by traditional Indic script handwriting.

This typeface family includes Spanish Roman letters and “Griffo” style italics, both hand-drawn by Francisco Lucas in Madrid, 1577. The letters, sometimes slightly mismatched in size or off the baseline, capture the look and feel of sixteenth-century printing. A fine, fat Deco face named Ludlow Stygian provided the basis for this delightful typeface. Although generally formal in character, the font shows a hint of playfulness in the distinctive “humpback” h and n characters. A sign at the 81st Street (Museum of Natural History) New York subway stop provided the pattern for this mosaic tile face. This little gem is based on a typeface discovered in a Boston Type Foundry catalog from the late 1800s, originally called "Mikado". This font gets its name from one of the more memorable characters in Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta. A quirky and unusual Art Deco monoline typeface can be found within the pages of the Esterbrook Drawlet Pen instruction book [circa the 1940s]. Drawlet was the direct competitor to Speedball Lettering pen nibs. Rundfunk is a condensed font which features an unusual lowercase with an extremely low x-height and high tail ascenders that align with the capitals. It is a reworking of the original designed by Adolf Behrmann for the Berthold type foundry in 1928. Rundfunk font is ideal for projecting the look and mood of the 1930s.

Another addition to the Whiz-Bang Wood Type series is this ultra-condensed font, well suited for very large headlines. Named for the body of water which separates Padre Island from the mainland of Texas. Service Men JNL is a collection of twenty-six service industry-related messages carried by a courier. Each image is offered facing left and facing right. A typeface named Sorbonne, unearthed by intrepid font-finder Dan X. Solo, provided the pattern for this quaint little charmer. Handlettering on a 1929 brochure for the P&O British-India Steamship Line inspired this tiddly typeface. In an 1896 specimen catalog for American Type Founders there is a design called Geometric Gothic. The lettering style looks as if it’s ahead of its time; foreseeing the 1980s. With its squared characters, some pointed overhangs and modified character shapes, this type design is now available as Squared Off JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

J. M. Bergling called the inspiration for this typeface “modern”—at least, it passed for modern in 1914. Its bold, sinuous forms and unusual decorative treatment suggest stained glass of a certain era, and so its name is German for “Arts and Crafts”.
