Linotype Startec, from Jan Tomás, is part of the TakeType Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contest 1999 for inclusion on the TakeType 3 CD. This is another fun font from Tomás, who also designed Alphabat, and the two share some characteristics. Linotype Startec is an outline font whose unique forms are reminiscent of futuristic dreams and space adventures. It should be used in point sizes of at least 18, but the phrase 'the bigger the better' fits this font well. The careful details and figures of the alphabet turn into UFOs and space ships from another world when set in very large point sizes. Linotype Startc is best for very short texts and headlines.

Spiraltwists is a family of 2 fonts giving assorted spiral shapes. In each font they're grouped in fours - the same basic spiral in 4 different orientations (N S E W almost), and Spiraltwists has solid lines making up the spirals, Spiraltwists Antique has dotted lines making up the spirals, giving them an antique or rustic appearance. Spiraltwists has heavier spirals on Upper Case, lighter spirals on lower case; plus a group of spirals with a straightened outer end and connecting lines so you get two spiral scrolls joined together by a long line at the top or bottom. Mozsár, named after Mozsár Street in the downtown of Budapest (pronounced ‘mo-zhar’, meaning mortar in Hungarian.) Mozsár is a unicase display typeface with constructivist characteristics from the early 20th Century. It uses pure geometric shapes and purposefully departs from strict typographical rules to give a more friendly look. With Mozsár you can create really unique and awesome looking displays, titles and even name plates for your business. It works very well in big size. The central idea behind the design was that two variants of the typeface would randomly alternate as the user types. The typeface uses Contextual Alternates (CALT) created with the OpenType’s semi-random feature to mix the variants. The width and height of the letter shapes are generally equal, but I made some exceptions to lend the type a character of unexpectedness. The curves are identical in both versions of each letter, and the intersections of the axes are always perpendicular (with some evident exceptions).

Mr Brown is a typeface based on hand drawn letters to our new book for children. It has up to four alternate glyphs for each character. You can switch them manually or use OpenType Contextual Alternates feature. It will automatically set alternate glyphs de-pending on frequency of appearance of the same character. The script doesn’t throw random glyphs. For example in the word “HIPPOPOTAMUS” you will automatically get three different “P” glyphs and two “O” glyphs. It really works great but of course you can always fine tune it by hand.

A few fonts ago I mentioned the fact that I like posh English words; words you don’t really use in conversation. As I am busy expanding my ‘halloween’ font collection, I came across the beautiful word Nefarious. It means wicked or evil and when you say the word, it even sounds evil! Fantastic! Stupid Meeting is an all caps display sans that didn't quite get its full 8 hours of sleep. A lot of attitude went into the design process and it shows throughout the entire character set. From a distance it looks fairly pedestrian but the closer you get, the rougher it gets around the edges. It's very simple, yet extremely playful. This family is available in 3 different styles. Laca Text is a sans-serif version of Laca. It was designed starting from the shapes of Laca. It is a cleaner version of Laca. Laca Text has characteristics like a bigger x-height, open counters, and smaller ascenders. It works better in smaller text than Laca because it keeps the structure without the stylistic features of Laca. Laca Text has more straight lines and follows the round shapes of Laca. Laca Text, as the name says, is more proper for long text but also for identity and branding.

It is difficult to classify a typography that is made from different line fragments but precisely that is what makes it stand out from the rest, a construction that took months and multiple corrections that now make up a set of glyphs with is own identity based on the game between blacks and whites, standing out especially in large formats, posters, headlines, logos and titles. Marazion takes its name from a Cornish seaside resort in the UK's West Country. It was inspired by some hand lettering I came across at a local inn on the seafront where I was enjoying a lunchtime pint (always a good place to seek inspiration in my experience!) Being based on a hand drawn script Marazion is a smooth, fluid and rounded font that is both fresh and distinctive. Personally, I think it is well suited to applications in food and fashion, but in practice its uses are more or less universal.

MTT Milano is a font inspired by the Milanese typographic heritage and the Futurist movement that developed it. Drawn from scratch, it features ascendants and descendants slightly taller than what can usually be found in similar typefaces, in order to improve its elegance. Whilst maintaining a good readability in body-text, this family meets its peak when displayed in medium-big sizes. There are five weights — from regular to black — each with their matching italic, ligatures and extended language support resulting in a full, flexible, ten fonts family.

Banret is built using simple geometric shapes. It is mostly the result of my experiments on the other font I made earlier in 2016, called Inventor. Font is inspired by old fonts of the beginning of the 20th century. Capital letters are built with one to four proportions. The font has four weights: normal, and bold, and two alternatives: ribbon, and flag. As far as it is a decorative font, it is not designed for large amounts of text. But it is perfect for creating branding elements, logos, slogans and posters.

QRc is based on a 2-D, space-saving optical code widely used in Japan. The code was originally intended for use in factories but quickly crossed into the consumer sector. With an enabled handset, a QR code -- which can appear on an ad, postcard, or almost anywhere else -- can be instantly interpreted to reveal its underlying message. QR contains 219 images. You can use the QRc font to accurately encode the letters you type, or just use it to create fields of lovely, semi-random pixel texture! The counterpart font, QR Type, is also a celebration of entropic pixelation, but the formations are alphabetic and human-readable.

ITC Tempus is the work of British designer Phill Grimshaw. He claims that every calligrapher's aspiration is to draw perfect roman capitals with a pen, but admits that this is extremely difficult. For this typeface, Grimshaw used a fountain pen on cheap, porous paper and, of course, the ink bled. The resulting forms are classic but their rugged edges deviate from the perfection of roman type. And Tempus Sans is just Tempus with the serif surgically removed, yet the proportions of the characters work nicely," says Grimshaw. Because of its rough quality, the typeface works best in larger point sizes, yet maintains its characters even in smaller sizes."

I created this font to capture the innocence and playfulness of doodle lettering that is created in schools everywhere. Typographic rules are non-existent and the characters are sometimes oddly and incorrectly shaped but that's exactly what gives it charm. What really got me started was Napoleon Dynamite, his drawings and "typography". This font does not mimic what you see in the movie at all, but it attempts to capture the same spirit of high school "doodle typography". My favorite line: "I am pretty much the best artist I know". The font was named after Boondoggle keychains, the other craft most scholars acquire at some point in their school careers.

"Soup Du Jour" is French and simply means "Soup Of the Day" - may not sound interesting, but I can tell you that I have had several tasty soup of the day served. I wanted to make a font that resembles that feeling of not really knowing what you get served, but you got a feeling that it is something good! But, in the end, any functional typeface worth its salt lives to serve one thing first: the text, the content. Gaslon is a slight reinterpretation and major expansion of a 1973 film type called Corvina Black, originally designed for VGC by A. Bihari. While the original typeface was popular in its own right, there were some things in it that were too quirky to work in the display applications it was intended for. Some of the letter combinations just didn't work to their visual optimum. For example the a and o were too similar, ditto the C and G, the E, F and J were too overwhelming to be set properly within certain display uses. Gaslon eliminates these problems by the inclusion of plenty of alternates for the vast majority of the original letters. In fact, the original a is itself now an alternate to a gorgeous new one. The Gaslon Alt font includes tremendous possibilities for both unicase use, and proper use in conjunction with the main font. This is our true homage to a typeface that had great potential more than three decades ago, but was overlooked by digitizers because of a few quirks it had in film type contexts. Full of curves and invitation, Gaslon ranks very high among the friendliest poster faces ever made. It is ideal for friendly store signs, children book covers, and plenty of other applications. In fact, if you're planning on contributing to a few protests around your neighborhood or city, you would probably be better off using Gaslon to help your sign/placard carry words and slogans that are big but friendly. Nothing beats "DOWN WITH GAS PRICES" set in a nice imaginative mix of the many Gaslon letters.
