Ad Hoc is a fake. My intention was to design a typeface with the looks of the characters drawn on paper with a marker pen. But they are all drawn on a monitor, with no scanner ever involved. That's the reason why they look so regular. Ad Hoc is Latin and stands for, approximately, for this reason". The expression itself is often used for something unplanned, improvised. Ad Hoc was released in 1992.

Hamada is a script typeface based on the powerful work of English calligrapher Gaynor Goffe. Hamada captures looseness and charming irregularities of the pen on the page, allowing ink to edge out from the contours and move across curves and letters. Thanks to OpenType, Hamada creates an impression very much like that of real calligraphy. Most of the letters in Hamada have alternate versions; the typeface comes with ligatures, ending swashes, and more.

I've always admired the work of Rudolph Koch. Culpepper is what I think Neuland would have looked like if it had been developed with lowercase, small caps and a range of weights. I started work on this series in the late 80’s and, like so many of my ideas, it was shelved when life drew me in another direction. Culpepper is the name of one of the islands in the Galapagos chain.

“The Auto Show” is the title of an early 1900s pieces of sheet music proving that America has had a fascination with cars since the earliest days of the automotive industry. The song sheet’s title was hand lettered in a casual Art Nouveau style which has been re-drawn digitally as Nouveau Auto JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions… and what’s better than a nouveau auto (a new car)?

Ornata B is the second of a series of old ornaments that I am trying to save from oblivion. I am not just scanning these, I am completely redesigning the ornaments from scratch, thereby eliminating imperfections. These ornaments have been first designed by the Elzevier printer family from the Netherlands. The designs date back til the 17th century and I think they just had to be saved. Comic books based on popular characters have been around pretty much since the advent of comic books themselves. An edition of the "Car 54 Where Are You?" series published by Dell (and based on the hit TV show created by Nat Hiken) displayed "Car 54" in a bold hand lettered stencil design on the cover. These few characters became the inspiration for Patrol Car Stencil JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Poppin is a playful font-type that you can comfortably use in all kinds of styles, from modern to old school. A combination of a few names on an old movie poster is what triggered the creation of this font type. Because it had such a strong rock and roll character, I decided to dedicate a font-type to it. Another Grotesk is a contemporary typeface that was inspired by the early grotesques. Upon closer inspection you will notice the terminals of some of the characters are slightly turned inwards, this detail gives Another Grotesk its distinctive and friendly personality. Another Grotesk is functional and has been crafted with a great attention to detail. It is available in 9 weights and two optical sizes with matching italics which adds up to 36 styles. Another Grotesk Text family has been carefully redesigned some of the details were removed and simplified, x-height increased, and ink traps added, but preserved the overall look and feel of the display version, to ensure a greater legibility and clarity in running text. Poem Script is a mixed collection of interpretations conjuring a late nineteenth century American pen script style. Though not an actual Italian letterform, this style was called “Italian Alphabet” stemming from an old penman’s term for an alphabet where the stress or shades are opposite their normal placement. The American variant followed from the late eighteenth century British hand also confusingly called “Italian Hand,” which itself evolved from some seventeenth century French batarde scripts. It showcases the phenomenal control and mastery of hand skills required to create such ornamental and lively letters centuries ago. Producing the shaded strokes in reversed positions such as this required holding the pen in a position horizontal to the baseline, or the letterforms would have to be written backwards or by rotating the paper at peculiar and extreme angles to achieve the effect. Exotic, elaborate and very attractive, Poem Script contains plenty of variations on each letter and comes with hundreds of calligraphic ornaments. Poem Script received a Certificate of Excellence at the Type Directors Club NY and was selected at the Bienal Tipos Latinos 2012.

Precious Sans Two is a complete reworking of the 2002 design which was only ever available in PostScript format. Over a decade later G-Type’s Nick Cooke decided to re-appraise the typeface, scrutinise the old letterforms and overhaul the family. Make no mistake though, Precious Sans Two is no rudimentary re-release; nearly every character has been redrawn, re-proportioned, respaced and improved. Precious Sans Two is now in cross-platform compatible OpenType format with extended Latin language support for Western & Central Europe, the Baltics & Turkey. The original quirkier glyphs (f, g, I) have been retained as an OT style set feature and the typeface now contains small caps and an extensive set of discretionary ligatures as well as both proportional & tabular figures. The character set is further enhanced with the addition of 20 directional single and double arrows in each of the six weights which range from Thin through to Black, all with accompanying italics. Pacific Clipper has its roots in an old 1930s showcard lettering style. An extra bold version of this sign painter’s relic is shown in Carl Holmes' wonderful book on lettering. It may be described as what happens when Rudolf Koch's Kabel Heavy meets ATF's Novel Gothic. Also known as Sam’s Tune, Pacific Clipper’s noteworthy features include wedged crossbars in the capital A, E, F, and H. Overcurving is present in the capital B, D, P, and R while vertical strokes in the lowercase b, d, h, k, l, and t are chopped off obliquely. Figures in Pacific Clipper are also refreshingly different, particularly the number 4. This lettering favorite turned retro typeface has been extended to include a variety of weights. Pacific Clipper is now available in the OpenType format. Some new characters have been added to this OpenType version as Stylistic Alternates and Historical Forms. Rodley is a geometric sans-serif typeface and a ground-up redrawing of Bairne – the first ever typeface from Fettle Foundry – with a completely new character set that closer resembles the original vision for the typeface. Magneton is a brush script typeface that contains three weights and two slant angles. Three weights simulates the pressure of the brush pen; light is written with a gentle pressure and the bold one with more pressure. The Dalecarlian runes, or dalrunes, was a late version of the runic script that was in use in the Swedish province of Dalarna until the 20th century.The province has consequently been called the "last stronghold of the Germanic script. When Carl Linnaeus visited Älvdalen in Dalarna in 1734, he made the following note in his diary: The peasants in the community here, apart from using rune staves, still today write their names and ownership marks with runic letters, as is seen on walls, corner stones, bowls, etc. Which one does not know to be still continued anywhere else in Sweden. The Dalecarlian runes were derived from the medieval runes, but the runic letters were combined with Latin ones, and Latin letters would progressively replace the runes. At the end of the 16th century, the Dalecarlian runic inventory was almost exclusively runic, but during the following centuries more and more individual runes were replaced with Latin characters. In its last stage almost every rune had been replaced with a Latin letter, or with special versions that were influenced by Latin characters.

Cartier was Canada’s first roman text typeface, created in 1967 to celebrate Canada’s centennial. Its designer, Carl Dair, was one of the country’s most celebrated graphic design pioneers, and a fine designer indeed — but he was not a trained type designer. He had spent a year at the Enschedé type foundry and printing works in the Netherlands, but that probably wasn’t enough to fully grasp all that was required to make an effective text face. It is also possible that Dair simply compromised his own design by not allowing any of the much needed alterations to be made to his working drawings when they were handed over to Linotype for production. Cartier, though a strikingly original oldstyle, never became the influential allround text face it might have been. A display typeface derived from it, Raleigh, was more successful. Realizing that Dair’s design was sound in concept, if not in execution, Rod McDonald began working on a new digital version in 1997. The final family is convincing proof that Cartier could have been the functional text face that Dair originally wanted.

This typeface appears to be straight out of a science fiction movie thriller. Mingo is a slightly condensed, somewhat vain gothic with thick vertical strokes proudly tapering downward. Capitals which are normally completely round are now square inside with curving outside corners. Lowercase letters carry the same design traits. And, in the capital A and H, crossbars extend on both sides helping give the face a pronounced retro look. Mingo Gothic is a close cousin to Raleigh Gothic and is an excellent choice for book covers and large display settings. Small caps, fractions, and alternate characters have also been developed for greater layout versatility. Mingo Gothic Bold is now available in the OpenType format. Some new characters have been added to this OpenType version as stylistic alternates, historical forms, small caps, oldstyle figures, ornaments, and f-ligatures. A collision between some stylin' caps from legendary lettering artist Samuel Welo and a lowercase loosely based on ATF’s Romany Script yields this curious little wonder. Named after a 70s song which averred that all it took to be “the coolest guy what is what am” is to talk fast, walk slow and look good wearing that 'hair. Please note that, due to the exaggerated overhang of the many of the uppercase characters, this font has been optimized for upper- and lowercase uses. The last couple of years felt like I was living in a bad dream: I witnessed crazy leaders, climate change and now Covid. I usually name my fonts after things that affect me and this one is not different. Dreamworld is a font I made with a cheap marker pen I liberated from my kids’ pencil box (I will put it back, pinky promise…). It is a bit rough, but also very easy to read and distinctive enough to make your work stand out. Of course it comes with extensive language support (let me mention Vietnamese again…) and two sets of alternate glyphs, that cycle as you type.

We have been in lockdown for a long time now. The schools were also closed, meaning my kids had to stay at home. This week the schools reopened (not a day too soon!), which means my kids can play with their friends again and learn something too! Bickley Script was designed by Alan Meeks in 1986 and is based on the handwriting forms popular at the end of the 19th century. The flowery capitals contrast beautifully with the delicate and reserved lower case letters, fit perfectly together and enhance the handwritten character of the font. Bickley Script looks as though it were written with a fine tipped pen and has an elegant, nostalgic charm. The font is best for headlines as well as short to middle length texts and should be set in point sizes of 14 or larger, and Bickley Script's capitals can also be used as initials with other alphabets.

This font takes its name and the overall shape from modern bentwood furniture, namely Scandinavian designs since the 1940s. The curved corners of the letterforms are practically hyperbolic, to convey the tension and strength of the bent plywood. These curves are meant to appear more dynamic than circular or elliptical segments of traditional sans serif fonts. The letterforms are simplified, without extra corners, stems, connections or hooks, yet remain legible at any size. Now at version 2, Bentwood contains Central/Eastern European, Baltic and Turkish character sets and more ligatures with Open Type functionality. Some minor corrections were made to letter shapes and positions, as well as to kerning and spacing.

Forte was designed by the Austrian commercial artist by Carl Reissberger who was trained as a compositor and later taught typography and drawing in Vienna. The idea for the Forte script font came from the study of plants, individual letter forms being inspired by the long stems and furry heads of the reed. Slightly inclined, it gives the impression of having been made with a bold brush or marker, and can therefore be used in work that requires an informal appearance. Forte is a strong design which contrasts well with sans serif faces and classical modern types. Use the Forte font in advertising, flyers and labels.

FT Drobbs is inspired by the Didot font group, known for its neoclassical style reminiscent of the Age of Enlightenment. The font includes a combination of very narrow and very wide lines. FT Drobbs features increased contrast between wide and narrow lines and includes rich teardrop endings. I love to watch how the lines bend, how they move, expanding or going into the thickness of the hair. I love their graceful beauty. FT Drobbs is not alphabetic, but it contains numbers, a set of basic currency symbols, and a few typographic characters. It is suitable for use as accents in labels, posters and infographics.

First of all, I don’t have an uncle called Edward, nor do I know anyone by that name. When I had finished this font, it had a strong ‘Uncle Edward’ feeling to it, so the name stuck. Uncle Edward is a handmade script font. I used a Japanese brush pen and some rough paper to create that ‘vintage’ look. Use Uncle Edward for your book covers, your invitations or your product packaging. Create labels for your vintage record collection with it, or print a guest list for your Christmas dinner party.
