Sztos (2018-2022) is a remix of one of the most famous grotesques used in Poland – Baccarat (published by Jan Idźkowski i S-ka in 1922). My version loosely refers to the original. On the one hand, I wanted to modernize the drawing and proportions, on the other hand, I did’t want to lose the historical flavour and details in which you can still feel traditional printing. In addition to the fairly wide version of the normal style, there is also a narrow version. Thanks to this contrast, Sztos gives the possibility of expressive combinations of different styles. Brandon Grotesque is a sans serif type family of six weights plus matching italics. It was designed by Hannes von Döhren in 2009/10. Influenced by the geometric-style sans serif faces that were popular during the 1920s and 30s, the fonts are based on geometric forms that have been optically corrected for better legibility. The design of VLNL Mais started out as a thought experiment – "How would it look if you dressed up FuturaBlack in LatinWide serifs?” DBXL drew up the first sketches on graph paper in 2014. Although the concept looked promising enough, it ended up dormant in a desktop folder. To be resurfaced recently when covid-19 started spreading and we were asked to all stay home. The final design ended up with a distinct latino flavour due to the long spikey serifs. They look like tortilla chips. And as maize is the main ingredient in many South-American and specifically Mexican dishes – tortillas, burritos, nachos, tamales, tacos – a name was quickly found. VLNL Mais was designed by DBXL, and can be used for logos, headlines, flyers or posters (and not just for Mexican restaurants). It can be found in the VetteLetters vegetable section.

I set out to design a contemporary font that is condensed with thick and thin strokes. The highly structured forms of this condensed font was made more interesting and softer by giving it a slightly calligraphic tone and by adding round corners. Atto's express purpose is to be both utilitarian, compact and technical but with a friendly face. The name "atto" was adopted since it refers to the measurement of "smallness" or detail. You will no doubt discover all the many pleasant nuances within Atto. Adopted in 1964, "atto" comes from the Danish "atten", meaning eighteen. With the Josef K *, Julia Sysmäläinen continues her artistic debate on Franz Kafka’s writing style. This time the designer of FF Mister K is not drawn to Kafka’s literary works created at night but to those the writer produced at daytime as a high-ranking, confident bureaucrat – Dr Franz Kafka. The typefaces Josef K “Paneuropean” and “Strong European” echoe Kafka’s prestigious status at the Workmen’s Accident Insurance Institute of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Their ductus, originating from a broad-nibbed ink pen combines a clear, self-confident stroke with the calligraphic features so typical for Franz Kafka’s handwriting. While both typefaces are more straightforward and bolder than the wonderfully erratic fonts of the FF Mister K family Josef K Paneuropean is best characterized as a semibold handwriting textface. A few bold caps drawn by Albert Du Bois for the 1906 Henderson Sign Painter book started me in the direction of looking at how sign painters approached slabs after the industrial revolution. The usual happened from there. My exercise in the early lettering roots of what eventually became the definition of geometric typography ended up having a life of its own. The majuscules led to minuscules, one idiosyncratic bold weight led to six more, and uprights led to italics. What was kind-of-interesting in the early twentieth century persuaded me to make it interesting enough a century later. This of course meant alternates, swashes, the standard baggage that keeps calling my name. Henderson Slab is a family of seven weights plus italics, all full of open features and extended Latin language support. Part of this family’s appeal is its coverage of nearly the entire of the slab serif through the last 100 years — the basis is the manual, humanist origins, the swashed forms come right out of the phototypesetting era, and the alternates and mostly modern constructs of contemporary ideas. The result is a set with the ability to function in modern spaces, from corporate to editorial, in text or display, while both winking and nodding at the roots of what is now considered a geometric endeavor. Lepontic is an ancient Alpine Celtic language that was spoken in parts of Rhaetia and Cisalpine Gaul (now Northern Italy) between 550 and 100 BC. Lepontic is attested in inscriptions found in an area centered on Lugano, Switzerland, and including the Lake Como and Lake Maggiore areas of Italy. While some recent scholarship (e.g. Eska 1998) has tended to consider Lepontic simply as an early outlying form of Gaulish and closely akin to other, later attestations of Gaulish in Italy (Cisalpine Gaulish), some scholars (notably Lejeune 1971) continue to view it as a distinct Continental Celtic language. In this latter view, the earlier inscriptions found within a 50 km radius of Lugano are considered Lepontic, while the later ones, to the immediate south of this area, are considered Cisalpine Gaulish. Lepontic was assimilated first by Gaulish, with the settlement of Gallic tribes north of the River Po, and then by Latin, after the Roman Republic gained control over Gallia Cisalpina during the late 2nd and 1st century BC

I built the Orchid Key font family from the ground up with the idea that there would be several different styles; the Inline Spurs style was the first to be built, which let me then subtract the spurs, inline slices, or both to make the other styles. I've never made a font quite like this before, which shows in the time it took - it's been over 5 months since I started construction! In order to give new imput to the art of typeface design in Italy, Nebiolo Company held, in March 1910, an artistic competition for a new alphabet conception, so the best-ranked design would be transformed into a real new typeface. 42 competitors participated and, although the first prize was not technically awarded, "Ancora" resulted as the best typeface, created by the designer-typographer Natale Varetti of Turin. Nonetheless, the new alphabet was transformed into a full-fledged metal typeface in 1924, renamed "Tanagra" in honor of the Greek city in the center of Boeotia. The new font, although not significantly detached from the classical Roman form, introduced decorative elements that allowed its use in both rational and artistic compositions. This font appears very clear and easy to read, with very high ascenders and some decorations that make it distinctly retrò. Finally, after almost 100 years, this peculiar character has been digitized taking it as a model the shapes of the 16 points size (other dimensions have significantly different contrasts and proportions). To adapt it to modern use, some glyphs have been modified, but all the originals are available as Stylistic Alternate OTF, as well as all the swashed variants while the missing ones were added.
