K-haus 105 is inspired by the work of graphic designer and typographer, Herbert Bayer, during his time at the Bauhaus around 100 years ago — work that kick-started graphic design as we know it, to this day. It owes something to the simple geometry of Bayer’s hand-drawn, ‘universal typeface’, updated and expanded to deliver a clean, balanced, geometric sans for today. We’re in a lockdown of sorts (again) and things are pretty … uhm … boring at the moment. No going out for a coffee, no school (so the kids are at home), no meeting with friends… The new reality kinda sucks if I say so myself. Besides that, it turns out that we have a new dominant type of Covid in Holland.. wait, Dominant Type! Ahh, great name for my latest font! Dominant Type is a handmade all caps font. It comes with extensive language support (including Vietnamese) and 2 sets of alternate glyphs for that bit of ‘random awesomeness’!

Modulario is a geometric sans with some disturbingly individual features. A few capitals owe a bit too much to Roman proportions. The circular O serves to distinguish it from the zero, and the luxuriously wide W and M are both pointed in the middle, although alternatives to the more contentious letters are available within the font. The lowercase shows a little more handwriting influence than is customary – we are used to seeing a writing-style curve at the base of the l, Modulario extends the influence to the i and a, and also sports a uniquely scripty s.

This family was inspired by a small French "toy print" box, with rubber stamp characters, from the 1920s. The set contained only capital letters, no accented letters and limited punctuation. We have reconstituted a complete modern standard set. The doubling of each usual character in each style (A-Z/a-z and numerals) gives a rich and variously uneven appearance, looking like the results of the real use of those old rubber stamps. The bold style may be used as a reinforcement, mixed with Normal style without disadvantage, allowing four choices for each usual letter... The original size is 6mm (about 17 pts).

This family was inspired by the two fonts used by the famous William Caxton in Westminster (UK) in the late 1400s. There is only one (Normal) style. We have added the accented characters and others not in use in the early time of printing, but the ligatures and the few abbreviations for the Old English language and Latin were present in the original fonts. The original cap height is about five to seven millimeters. Elastica is a new handwritten type system created by Resistenza, it is based on humanistic sans serif fonts of early 20th century. A ‘Brochette’ in French is a skewer. I used to be a tour guide and some years ago, I guided a couple of tours in Mali. Every night at dinner we had the choice of a ‘Brochette de Capitaine’ (grilled Nile perch on a skewer) or a ‘Brochette de Bœuf’ (grilled beef on a skewer). Of course, every night the Brochette came with French fries and ‘petits pois’ (peas). It was really nice, but after 4 months of eating Brochettes, I longed for something different! Brochette is a very nice rounded font. It comes with curls, swirls and swashes.

The family of Tipografia Maracatu was born in 2020 when we could not leave the house because of the coronavirus epidemic. I had no idea how it would turn out. I just wanted to draw letters. When I finished the regular version, I thought it looked a lot like the art and music from the Northeast of Brazil, and that is why I came up with the name Maracatu. Maracatu is a musical-style original from the Northeast of Brazil. After I had the font style and the Regular version, I thought it would be nice to have Bold and Light.

Rachele is a mono line based script thin font. Inspired on the cute “Italian Bella Scrittura” handwriting but influenced by Spencerian. Greater Albion Has been toying with thoughts of a “unicase” typeface for a while. On the other hand we’ve always wondered just what practical use they are. It is also a while since we’ve introduced a ‘handwritten’ design. Therefore, It struck us that one answer was something ‘hand-lettered’. These days many people do write in a sort of informal unicase don’t they? But, at the same time, we wanted it to have a little character. So here it is, a bit calligraphic, with a touch of black-letter and a cunning mix of upper- and lower-case forms Uncia Black!

A font drawn in a rounded rectangle looks modern – if we do not mind that it was in vogue mainly in the 80s of the last century and was created in the fifties, when various Italian designers noticed that the outline of a glass TV screen is actually the letter “o“. Since then, this progressive idea has undergone many improvements, which can be summarized in the notion of “popular-scientific typographic revival”. The present incarnation called “Superscience” has the advantage of having extreme variations and nicely simplified letters, as well as the usual repertoire of OTF functions and playful variations.

EmBauhaus is a display typeface, geometric in style, inspired by the face named after the world changing Bauhaus School. To aid readability I rethought the original typeface and closed all of the voids cut out of the strokes. We also modified the upper case to make it a more traditional design. An example of this is the upper case L, where a 90 degree angle was added.  This typeface was designed to be used judiciously in a layout, to draw focus to words and headlines, using stark angles, radii and geometry to create visual rhythm and gestalt.

Beeching is a family of six typefaces designed to combine extreme legibility with a hint of retrospective character. It is inspired by the lettering used in the Leslie Green designed stations of the London Underground and is as up to date today as it was the day those stations opened. The Beeching faces (Regular, Bold, Small Capitals, Small Capitals Bold, Shadowed and Small Capitals Shadowed) are ideal for use in large scale signage that needs to be seen over long distances. We feel the family provides a clear demonstration that traditional details, such as serifs and ligatures serve to enhance legibility.

Isotonic started out as a spin-off with the idea of creating a text oriented version of Ciutadella, it has since taken on a life of its own. Building on a foundation that has proven to work very well, we decided to open the counters and increase the x height. Even though it is not strictly a text font, it works surprisingly well in body sizes and screens. Madiffure is a modified neo-grotesk gothic font; this font basically has no consistency in several letter styles, so this font looks unique and bolder in its application of letter development. And this font is suitable for bolder and more modern design themes to apply to certain design uses. On the other hand, we also paid attention to making this font more pleasing to the eye so that it is more comfortable to read even at the smallest size. The Madiffure font is also equipped with Cyrillic as an addition to the basic language style, namely Latin 1 and 2.

Indenture English Penman is based on research into original English and American indenture contracts from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, mostly with roundhand scripts, paragraph versals in Old English script and many, many flourishes. This font has a little of everything, with hundreds of glyphs: dozens of versals to each alphabet letter, some versals in Old English style, plus flourishes to use at beginnings of paragraphs or chapters, and many additional flourishes to create perfect ancient documents. To better use the resources of this font we suggest using the Glyphs resource in Illustrator and other software.

The font DXAngelusMediaval was developed on the basis of the Angelus Mediaval font, which was issued by Russian type foundry from the beginning of the 20th century (type foundry of G. Bertgold, St. Petersburg and Moscow, before 1904). Probably, the font is a reworking of the DeVinne font (1892 (?), Designer Nicholas J. Werner) of the American Central Type Foundry. For the reconstruction, we used examples of font prints: Cyrillic from the catalog "Art Fonts", 1929, Latin part - Chicago font, from the catalog "La Fonderie Typographique Francaise" (FTF) 1924. In addition, in the font are available Digits of the old style and ligature.

After readings and reflections about the process-poem,“anti-literary” movement, contemporary of concretism, a font of simple form that could provide directions and sense of reading demanded its creation. So we have done the labor of the processual, modulate by consequence and not by option, born with autonomy and authority. The process demanded soon two things: first, to not be one more “hard to read pixelfont” used only by its creators; second, to attend to the requirements of the poem-process, not like a good daughter but like a modern and comprehensive grandchild (the generations understand themselves to the jumps).
