The goal with South Island was to make a font that looked authentically handwritten. Each character had to perfectly flow into the next and maintain a nice balance between variation and legibility. The typeface retains all the texture and grit of the original handwritten characters, making it especially powerful when used for large headers. South Island comes in a regular version, and a second version which contains alternate versions of each letter A-Z (both upper and lowercase). Try pairing it up with a more traditional serif or sans serif font for endless possibilities.

We have created this family from the numerous derivatives in use for newspapers since the middle of the 1800s to the 1970s, inspired by the well known Clarendon. Mainly, the patterns are those used to print Le Petit Journal, a popular French Newspaper of the era (published from 1863 to 1937). The present version contains Normal, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic styles, in two sub families: 1906 French News for texts and titlings with upper and lower case, and 1906 French News Caps (Caps, small caps, small numerals, for texts and titlings).

The inspiration for this font made its first appearance in the 1897 American Type Founders specimen book, under the name "Lithotint". As the name suggests, the original was tinted gray (diagonal lines formed the body); this version is solid and spooky, too. The font contains a few ghostly graphics, including ghosts at the bracket positions, a haunted house at the backslash position, and a scary backdrop at the ASCII tilde and ASCII circumflex positions. Linotype Octane is part of the Take Type Library, selected from the contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. The font was designed by German artist Norbert Reiners, a tall, thin font with a narrow line width and marked stroke contrast. The regular and bold weights seem somewhat static while the italic cuts make a dynamic impression. Linotype Octane is available in four weights, each of which contains a number of ligatures. The cool and reserved Octane is best used for shorter texts and headlines in larger point sizes.

A blackletter font tending towards the gothic which was released by Klingspor, Offenbach am Main, in 1937. Claudius can be used for clerical as well as for secular purposes and shows a strong character of its own. The original esthetic atrocities of placing the dieresis within the letters A and O - due to former German industry standards - were abolished.
