Some unusual hand lettering was found on the cover of the 1924 edition of a Spanish language novel by Joaquin Belda entitled “La Hora del Abandono” ("The Time of Abandonment"). The title was created as all lower case characters in a semi-serif style reflecting the dawn of the Art Deco movement. A new set of capital letters was created for this digital revival, along with the numbers, punctuation and other necessary glyphs. Mantequilla JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions. For those unfamiliar with the Spanish language, Mantequilla (pronounced mon-tay-key-yuh) means butter.

Latin music was all the rage in the United States from the 1930s through the 1950s and songs with a “South of the Border” or “Old Mexico” theme were plentiful. The 1940 sheet music for “Make Love with a Guitar” evoked the idea of serenading one’s lovely lady on horseback while strumming the guitar. ..at least if you went by the by the illustration under the song’s name. As the hand lettered title was rendered in an Art Deco design, it became the basis for Jazz Guitar JNL [which seemed a more befitting name], and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

From Weimar to København/Copenhagen, picking up some decadent traits on its journey. The design of Copenhagen Grotesk is inspired by the great German grotesque type design history, although it will not fall into ranks in all aspects. Sheet music for another one of those songs from the early part of the 20th Century with a wonderfully wordy hand lettered title was the model for the Art Nouveau flavored Go Home JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. 1908's "I Used to be Afraid to Go Home in the Dark (Now I'm Afraid to Go at All)" is comprised of eighteen words. It may have been a mouthful to request from the local sheet music shop, but the lettering on its cover made it a great candidate for preserving as a digital typeface.

On February 15, 1926, the Display Material Company of St. Paul Minnesota patented a sign making outfit consisting of a series of stencils in various sizes and styles, paints, brushes, instructions for use and all stored inside a convenient wooden case. Sold to any business in need of making many signs at low cost, this versatile stencil set enabled many a merchant to produce posters, show cards and price tags for pennies over what a commercial sign shop would charge. Floorwalker JNL is the digital version of one of these stencil fonts, solidified into a pre-Art Deco-era typeface.

Blacker Pro is the revised and extended version of the original wedge serif type family designed by Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini and Andrea Tartarelli in 2017. Blacker was developed as a take on the style that Jeremiah Shoaf has defined as the "evil serif" genre: typefaces with high contrast, oldstyle or modern serif proportions and sharp, blade-like triangular serifs. Due to the high contrast in the design - slightly reminescent of didone typefaces - Blacker has been developed in two optical subfamilies. The display version offers tighter tracking, higher contrast and sharper corners for maximum effect at big sizes, while the text variant offers better readability and screen rendering at smaller sizes, with lower contrast and looser spacing. Among the countless typefaces available today, the Modern Face style is relatively underrepresented. During the 19th century and then later with the competition from the mechanized hot metal types and film setting, a number of attractive headline types appeared in this style. For text, however, the available types were limited to those based on tried and true classics like Walbaum, Didot and Bodoni, which were created between 1780 and 1830, as well as a few variations from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. The demand for new Modern text types remained nonexistant until the 1960s. Such was the situation when the Haas'sche Schriftgiesserei (Haas Type Foundry) commissioned me to come up with a concept and sketches of a new hot metal type. I was able to convince the director of the foundry that there was a niche to be filled with contemporary Modern typography. Another reason for the production of a new type was of a technical nature: the introduction of a new setting technique should not be limited to existing typefaces, but instead should lead to innovative text types suited to the demands of the new applications. André Gürtler, Basilia's designer: I began to work on the concept and initial designs of the new text type in 1968. I wanted to give the type a classical look, expressed above all in the strong stroke contrast between the robust verticals and fine horizontal strokes and serifs. This is one of the main characteristics of Modern typography.""This new typeface, Basilia, is distinguished by its soft, open appearance as well as a number of details which together mark a departure from historical models. For example, it has nothing of Bodoni's round letters and their angular, narrow spacing, and displays instead round forms with a much softer stroke in the curves. It was very important to me to avoid the Modern characteristic of stiff, vertical, grid-like strokes and to create instead a lighter, more transparent type. I retained the Modern style by using straight horizontal serifs at right angles to the strokes to still give the type its sense of rigidity." Three sketches for Basilia (normal, italic, and bold) were finished in 1973. Only the 9-point size was produced at first. In the following years, basic weights were made and adapted to filmsetting."

Now here's a font with an unusual backstory. You may recall that a while ago we discovered that Tim Burton was using an outdated version of one of our fonts for the interior titles in his The Corpse Bride. Well, our quest to get hold of him didn't bear any immediate fruit, but in a totally unrelated event we were contacted by the graphic arts company working with the overseas distributors for The Corpse Bride and it turned out that they needed a font based on the main title of the movie so they could keep the same style when they retitled it into other languages. The original title was either hand lettered or a heavily modified font, bearing some resemblance to our Ligeia and Tuscarora fonts, so we had to create a whole font more or less from scratch and extrapolate most of the letters from the very limited sample in the original title by identifying certain consistent characteristics and building new characters around them. It was a lot of work, but the good news is that they didn't want exclusivity, so we've got the font to add to our collection. We ended up calling it Beynkales which means 'Bone Bride' in Yiddish, which makes sense given the context of the movie. So here it is, in all its tattered glory, and bound to end up in our Halloween font selection later this year as well. Beynkales Alternate is a companion font that includes a full set of alternative upper and lower case characters which can be used on their own or in combination with the characters from Beynkales to create a more varied and handwritten look.

German Designer Klaus Sutter digitized Mustang, a brush script typeface from the 1950s originally drawn by Imre Reiner (1900-1987) and published in 1956 by D. Stempel AG.
