John Baskerville spared no effort to create the ultimate typographic book. Glitzy is a caps-only font with extreme contrast. It was inspired by Art Deco typefaces, especially Broadway by Morris Fuller Benton, but Glitzy is not an attempt to reproduce that typeface. The letters on the lower-case keys differ slightly from the letters on the upper-case keys. The large black interiors invite decoration and the family includes four faces with interior decoration. While helping produce a trade magazine years ago, I admired the hand-lettering of the art director -- a woman named Marydale -- and suggested she let me model a font after her penmanship. She agreed and drew out the alphabet, and I launched an old copy of Fontographer and (to shorten a long story) ended up developing my very first digital typeface. Which has since, astonishingly, become famous worldwide. So now the real Marydale gets the mixed blessing of seeing her handwriting (and name) plastered all over the planet. Hello Buena - From Wood to Digital Type Buena is the first word I read on a letterpress paper, printed by my colleague and friend Wolfgang Wick. I was fascinated by the power of this fat wooden letters at first glance. So I started to create a digital version of it and »Buena Black« was born. Must a letter always have a symmetrical basic form? What happens when the shape of the letters stretch like an arc in the reading direction? When writing with a broad nib, this is easily achieved. The HGB Santo examines the effect of this formal principle on the readability of a text. First attempts have shown a warm and reader-friendly typeface. Six shades from Light to Black, each with an italic should be sufficient for most applications. At first glance, »Angulosa M.8« is one of those fonts that a technician or engineer would probably draw. And yet it differs fundamentally from typefaces constructed in this way. The right angle forms the basic element of the »Angulosa M.8«, but that's about it with the pure mathematics. Serif-like upstrokes and downstrokes on some letters improve readability, and carefully used slants makes the appearance a little friendlier. The proportions are not based on any mathematical principle, but are derived from freehand writing of the letterforms with a broad quill.
