I just returned from a short holiday in Japan. I stayed in hostels and small guesthouses and noticed a peculiar thing they all had in common: they love little notes, telling you where to go, what to do, how to use the microwave oven and when to check out. These notes were sometimes printed, but more often they were handwritten. I found that the Japanese way of writing roman characters is a little, well, unusual. The letters are correct, but they have that typical ‘Japanese look’ - most notably the a and A the b, d and g, the p and P and the t and T. I can’t really tell you what makes them look different, maybe it’s the proportions, but I do know that a Nippon Note is highly recognisable. Andrade is a new typeface designed by Dino dos Santos in 2005. This typeface was inspired in the typographic work of Manoel de Andrade de Figueiredo (b.1670-d.1735), Nova Escola para Aprender a Ler, Escrever e Contar, printed in 1722 at Offcina de Bernardo da Costa de Carvalho. This is one of the most important books, and almost forgotten, about Portuguese calligraphy and typography, and the work of Andrade de Figueiredo is among the most amazing examples of type design of the Eighteenth Century. His work inspired Ventura da Silva, a Portuguese typographer, who in 1803 published a book named Regras Methodicas, where he redesigns some of Figueiredo's type specimens. But Ventura's purpose was to create a more elegant and readable typeface than Didot and Bodoni. This kind of typeface used to be called leitura and is a transition between the baroque and modern typography. Andrade is a brilliant text typeface and is available in Regular, Italic, Bold, Bold Italic, Ligatures, Ligatures Italic, Swashes and Ornaments. Andrade is my tribute to Portuguese typography and to the work of Manoel de Andrade de Figueiredo in particular.

Folkwang is an unusual roman type with a lowercase that resembles an upright italic. Unusual top serifs are contrasted by almost no foot serifs. Originally released by the Klingspor foundry in 1955, this face originated from Hermann Schardt while he was the director of the Folkwang Werkkunstschule in Essen Germany circa 1949. According to British book designer and printing historian John Dreyfus in the 1955 Penrose Annual: Folkwang “…is a lovingly made piece of work which could have easily have been little more than an act of awe-struck reverence for the calligraphic techniques rediscovered by Edward Johnston and spread abroad in Germany by Anna Simons. Of special interest is the serif treatment of the lower-case letters: at the feet the terminals are mostly left bare, but the ascenders and the cross-strokes of the f and t are given elaborate curving serifs which in the mass create an effect unusual in a page of letters made as movable types, resembling rather more a piece of intaglio engraving. The ligatures ch and ck are original and successful.”

What really caught my attention were scripts in the Spencerian style. I’ve been fascinated by this American penmanship tradition ever since. A few years ago I developed a font. Boris Bencic used it when he was redesigning L’Officiel magazine in Paris. I took these initial forms and developed them into the font Mommie when I started my own foundry. Although I usually design text typefaces, working on Mommie taught me how complex it can be to create a script headline font. The biggest challenge in this process has been to keep it alive and fresh. The Regular weight is only made for very big headlines. The thin lines with the bold drops are very elegant. For smaller sizes use the Medium and Small weight. It won the TDC 2008 award and was Judges Choice of Christian Schwartz.

This typeface is primarily optimized for the setting of belles-lettres. The regular styles are balanced to suit small text sizes and enable the reading of long portions of text. The development of the typeface was guided by the goal of creating a contemporary, discreet book serif, with modern expression and numerous functions. Letters feature reduced contrast, the lighter styles may evoke wired letters, while the heavier ones bear distinct slab serif references. The extremes thus work in harmony and fulfil the demanding requirements of advertising and magazine layout. The typeface is suitable for bottle labels, invitations, exhibition catalogs and posters, for printed and online presentations alike. The name Pepone was chosen as an homage to Josef Kroutvor. Of course, the typeface isn’t solely reserved for the setting of the works of Josef K. On the contrary – we’d like to present a universal typeface suited for literature, catalogs and magazines. It wouldn’t be the first and the last example of a typeface created with a specific purpose in mind, which later became used universally.

Aphrosine is a font based on pointed pen script. A huge lot of alternatives and smart OpenType features allow it to look almost indistinguishable from real live handwriting. Aphrosine is something between handwriting and calligraphy: it took too much effort for being “just handwriting” but lacks seriousness and regularity comparing to true calligraphic fonts. That’s why it was called after a peculiar character from a children’s book: a witch who was very fond of dressing, makeup and writing letters. Aphrosine has three faces. But unlike most other type families, the glyphs from one face do not match exactly the glyphs from another one. The faces are based on writing with different nibs but by the same hand. The type is designed by Alexandra Korolkova and Alexander Lubovenko and released by ParaType in 2015.

Grit Sans is a font balanced enough to stand strong on the tippy-toes of its pointed "t" ascenders. Even all caps communicates calm. Dashes of whimsy in the proportionately plump X-Heights tell of the accountant drinking too much sherry at the office Christmas party, but thick, consistent strokes never lets you forget his job title. Ascenders and descenders consistently reach the same heights and depths, further attesting to the reliability of this typeface, at even very small sizes. Hazelton is a neo-humanist typeface inspired by the explorations and development of early British sans-serif typography. Six weight have been developed for Hazelton. The lighter weights are loosely inspired by Edward Johnston’s Underground typeface. The heavier weights glean inspiration from Stephenson Blake’s Granby. Sharp, pointed terminals that are indicative of British typography have been omitted in favour of a more modern sensibility. Subtle humanist characteristics become more exaggerated as the typeface increases in weight, making the lighter weights practical for text purposes and the heavier weights ideal for display use. A unique set of numerals have been developed to infuse them with a humanist quality that is often lacking when typesetting technical data. The result is a diverse typeface that is as powerful as it is beautiful.

Meccanica is pretty unique and difficult to describe, suffice to say that it’s a geometric sans typeface with some hexagonal DNA. The idea behind Nolan is to create emotional response due to its inviting character and legibility. It is ideal for headlines, presentations, product signage and bespoke logotypes. Due to the structure of the letters, Nolan can also stand its ground in body text, although this is not its primary purpose. Nolan is created slightly wider than what is to be expected from a typical sans font, yet not to the point of being considered a wide typeface. This uniqueness lends the family an air of originality while adhering to already established standards in the creation of contemporary sans typefaces. Nolan has a large x-height, so as to deliver a better punch and be legible at a glance . Its clean and modern lines are reminiscent of architectural aesthetic.

Terrance Weinzierl's Terry Junior typeface is a perfectly imperfect design – one that retains the marks of the brush used to create it and harks back to the craft required to hand make letterforms. Originally drawn during a Monotype Font Marathon, Weinzierl later refined the typeface digitally – adding an Inline version and designing alternates that replicate the irregularity of real-life brush scripts. “It has a natural, cheery and bold appearance,” says designer Terrance Weinzierl. “It's young, but not wild. Painted, but not sloppy. A sign painter's apprentice, perhaps.” Terry Junior is an obvious choice for designers and brands communicating with younger audiences, but would also work well on book covers, packaging, and in digital environments that need a little bit of extra playfulness. Star Ornaments are seen as a long standing companion to many wood type poster layouts. Various manufacturers managed to derive many variations of the five pointed star motif and offered them as a ubiquitous ornament option in almost all of their catalogs. Manufacturers such as Wm. H Page, Morgans & Wilcox, Tubbs Mfg. Co. and of course, Hamilton Wood Type each had their own slight variations. This digital font features almost 100 glyphs of mostly stars, but it also features a unique star border that can create boxes just like the modular offerings of the 19th century. The twist on this digital version is the inclusion of additional connection options that become a unique lettering 'kit' that can create typography or maze-like connections using a limited set of component parts.

Unzial typefaces consist of letter forms of the Capitalis Monumentalis and the majescule cursive. The origins of Unizial faces date back to the 5th century. The Neue Hammer Unziale was developed from the Hammer typeface, which was designed by Victor Hammer in 1921, cut by A. Schuricht and appeared with the font foundry Klingspor in 1923. In 1953, American Unizial was expanded to include some new figures, also designed by Hammer, and was rereleased by Klingspor with the name Neue Hammer Unziale. The forms are based on old scripts in books of antiquity and the early Middle Ages and the font is a new variation of a classic. Neue Hammer Unziale has been a favorite for certificates and diplomas and is recommended for headlines and shorter texts in a point size of 12 or larger.

Inspired by the Roman lettershapes that Asensio y Mejorada drew in 1780, Frontis is a text typeface that takes this reference just as a starting point. The delicate appearance of Neoclassical fonts becomes confidence in Frontis. The characters have a solid skeleton, and the text looks classy in the condensed half of the family. A style that shines especially at display sizes. A collection of vegetal motifs and some stylistic uppercase ligatures complete the character set. These extra shapes serve to frame and bring together all the weights and styles in the type family. The lapidary ligatures and the ornaments underline the 18th-century roots of the design. There is a connection between Frontis and those classic letters that were once engraved on stone. And yet, the design is daring enough to make it a perfect choice for contemporary use.
