From the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, by way of Toronto, comes Martie's handwriting. Martie Byrd is a school teacher in Roanoke, Virginia, and a friend of Canada Type's Rebecca Alaccari. After years of admiring the cheer and clarity of Martie's handwriting, we asked her to write out full alphabets for some cool font treatment. The intent was to do three different versions of her writing in two different pens, then use the auto-magic of OpenType to determine letter sequences and rotate character sets on the fly when the fonts are in use. A successful endeavor it was. Take a look at the images in the MyFonts gallery to see the character rotation in action, along with a visual explanation of why Martie is not just another handwriting font. Unlike other available felt tip and ballpoint handwriting fonts, the regular and bold variations are style-based, not weight-based. They are the handwritten expressions of two different Sharpie pens: The fine point one (Martie Bold), and the ultrafine one (Martie Regular). The style-based variation considerably helps the realism needed in design pieces that take advantage of the contrast of two different handwriting fonts. Weight thickening in handwriting is an obvious mechanical effect that only happens with computers. Weight changing by replacing pens is what happens in the real world. Martie Pro and Martie Pro Bold each contain three different character sets in a single font. Language support includes Western, Central and Eastern European languages for all three sets. This translates into each Pro font containing over 750 characters. Add OpenType code and stir, and you have true handwriting fonts with versatility unavailable out there in anything else of the genre. A software program that supports OpenType features is needed to use the randomization coded in Martie Pro and Martie Pro Bold. Current versions of QuarkXpress and Adobe applications (Photoshop, Illlustrator, InDesign) do contain support for the randomization feature. But if you don't have one of these apps, you can still use the interchangeable Type 1 or True Type fonts and change the characters manually to achieve the appearance of true handwriting. The Martie fonts come in a variety of price packages, from the affordable single fonts to value-laden complete sets. All the proceeds from these fonts received by Canada Type will be donated 50/50 to two primary schools: One in Roanoke (where Martie teaches), and one in Toronto (where the 10-year old, real Canada Type boss goes). As its name implies, sharpy appears as if written with a fine-point marker. As with most Typadelic fonts, sharpy is warm and friendly and works well at small and large text sizes.

Martin, a condensed semi-serif with rounded edges and friendly serifs, shows its charme best in short, pointed sentences, in headlines set in about 20 to 36 p. The playing with serifs in a condensed, very characteristic type design is attractive and the technical skill is convincing. More styles are planned. The idea was to try to apply a given design criteria (also see Volker Schnebel's Marita and Manuel fonts) to every single character. In other words, start with a character and develop all of the others from it. This is quite easy for some characters but extremely difficult for others. This process generates creativity and the characters move away from the initial constructed sketch. Together in a typeface, the individual characters are now all of a piece and character.

Smurrie means ‘sludge’ in Dutch. It is not an exact translation, but as good as I could find. The name refers to the rounded, blob-like shape of the glyphs. I think this font would look very good on posters, book covers and T-shirts. Smurrie is an all caps font, but upper and lower case differ and can be used together. Smurrie oozes with charm, fun and happiness and comes with a whole bunch of diacritics.

The name "Smart Casual" says it all. This is the font to use when you want to create that smart impression without being too formal. It is based on the font "Black Tie" but it is less formal than "Black Tie". It conveys an impression of relaxed elegance without being either sloppy or too intimate. Smart Casual is ideal for invitations to stylish but relaxed events, for advertisements that are intended to create that special ambience, for posters and for announcements. Smart Sans is a personal tribute to Leslie (Sam) Smart, the first type director to be hired by a major typesetting house in Canada. Smart was a twentieth century design pioneer who raised the standards of Canadian typography. Together with three of his peers, he established the first Type Directors Club in Toronto. After Smart's death in 1998, type designer Rod McDonald decided that something should be done to commemorate Smart's life and achievements. I had first thought of establishing a scholarship in Sam's name, but a typeface design soon replaced this idea," says McDonald. "Once I decided to design a typeface, however, it became a foregone conclusion that it would be a sans serif - for no other reason than that I loved the name Smart Sans." Two typefaces served as inspiration for McDonald's work. "Like thousands of designers, I'm keen on Matthew Carter's Helvetica Compressed series. And, when I was younger, I also loved Fred Lambert's Compacta," says McDonald. "I thought there might be a place for a small range that could take over from these 'old workhorses' and, in the process, bring a fresher look to the genre." McDonald drew three weights for the Smart Sans family, all ideally suited for setting attention-getting headlines and powerful display copy. The two-storied 'g' contributes to the design's lively personality, and the short 'r' helps maintain tight, even spacing. This is a special font for use creating US Postal Service "Intelligent Mail" barcodes. Those are the barcodes you see on most cards and envelopes. Commercial mailers get the best pricing by printing barcodes when they address the mail, saving the Postal Service a step. The barcodes are also used on reply mail and Share mail, and for "Informed Visibility" tracking. Software to create these barcodes, including the USPS Intelligent Mail Small Business (IMsB) tool, typically provide an output of 65 characters, each character being an A, D, T or F, corresponding to each of the styles of bar. Marli is an adaption of a face designed by F. Schweimanns and issued by the Stempel Foundry from 6 to 48 point, as “Korso”, in 1913. In 1936 the American Intertype issued their version for the line composing machines in 12 and 14 point as “Camera”. It is a very suitable type face for personal stationery, announcements, greeting cards and the like. The font is updated with a full Open Type character set, while also a Cyrillic has been added.

Party was designed by Carol Kemp. It is a wild, intoxicating typeface. The capitals can be used alone or as initials for the lowercase. Gérard Mariscalchi is a self-made designer. Born in Southern France of a Spanish mother and an Italian father, he has worked as a mechanic, salesman, pilot, college teacher – even a poet (with poetry being the worst-paying of these professions, he reports.) “Throughout all this, the backbone of my career has always been design,” Mariscalchi says. “I’ve been drawing since I was five, but it wasn’t until I was twenty-four that I learned that my hobby could also help me earn a living.” It was about this same time that Mariscalchi fell in love with type. He studied the designs of masters like Excoffon, Usherwood and Frutiger, as well as the work of calligraphers and type designers such as Plantin, Cochin and Dürer. With such an eclectic background, it’s no surprise that Mariscalchi’s typeface designs are inspired by many sources. Baylac and Evita reflect the style of the art nouveau and art deco periods, while Marnie was created as an homage to the great Lithuanian calligrapher Villu Toots. However, the touch of French elegance and distinction Mariscalchi brings to his work is all his own. Baylac Who says thirteen is an unlucky number?
