Mr Dum Dum was designed for our game – Ba Ba Dum. In Ba Ba Dum players can learn words in different languages, so we needed a typeface that can support not only all latin characters but also Cyrillic, Greek and two Japanese syllabaries – Hiragana and Katakana. Eventually we wanted to add Chinese support so we designed 1314 Simplified Chinese characters – just enough to cover all words available in Ba Ba Dum plus necessary logograms to translate the games UI.

I, uh, don't know quite what to say. I'd toiled so long over Pumpkinseed back in '96 that I guess I needed a good, wild ride to shake out the head cramps, or something. Whatever grabbed me, it forced me to sit down and design a typeface real fast directly in Fontographer (had never done that before). Took less than two hours to finish the regular character set. No way to explain it, but the exercise actually paid off -- I think. And now that there was Speed Bump, there simply had to be a companion dingbat set. (Beats the heck out of me.) Tobu means 'to jump' in Japanese. I came across a haiku by Matsuo Bashô wich reads: The old pond… a frog jumps in… the sound of water (Furu ike ya… kawazu tobikomu… mizu no oto). The font is named Tobu because of its jumpy character: it doesn't have a real baseline, which makes it playful and fun to use. Tobu comes with a pond full of diacritics.

This is a woodblock, printed, distressed, 'stamped' kinda font. It jumps all over the place, with no respect for the baseline.
