BC Away is a display typeface. It has emerged from the idea of drawing letterforms with a single-line path. Thanks to this idea, the characters are designed out of standard and conventional forms. Character designs are a combination of sharp corners and smooth curves, at the same time keeping readability. Some parts have been left blank in accordance with the letter forms. The name 'Away' represents these blanks. Also, the word 'a way' refers to the design of letterforms using a single-way.

The Roger family was designed in memory of a friend of ours who passed away recently. We created a humorous design for him because he was always laughing and never failed to see the funny side of things. We miss his great outlook on life.

I am not a very romantic type (pun intended…), but a slightly slanted connected script always looks as if it was made for romance! Summer Romance is a beautiful connected script, made entirely by hand using a Japanse calligraphy brush-pen. I have always been fascinated by the ‘Full English Breakfast’. A Full English usually consists of toast, baked beans, sausages, fried eggs, fried tomatoes, fried mushrooms and sometimes blackpudding (a kind of sausage made from pig’s blood). When I lived in England, my friends were always quite happy to stow away a big full breakfast, but I, on the other hand, could not really set myself to eating one. Full English is a hand made stencil font. If you own a pub and you serve breakfast, you could use it for your signs, but I guess this font looks good on anything that needs a bit of attention. For attention, it will get!

Linotype Dummy is a part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. The Canadian artist Tad Biernot based the design of his font on optical illusions like those of M. C. Escher. Katsudon is a Japanese crumbed and deep fried pork cutlet, typically served on rice with egg drizzled over it. There is also a chicken variety. I have been to Japan numerous times (it is my favourite country) and each time I revelled in the great variety of foods being served in street stalls and hole-in-the-wall eateries. I especially love the grandma-and-grandpa eateries that are tucked away in alleys behind the major shopping streets. They never speak English and my Japanese is shaky (to say the least), but the food is always good and we always seem to understand each other. This year, I couldn’t travel to Japan, because of the Covid outbreak, but I can tell you that I miss Japan a lot! Katsudon is a crumbed and deep fried font. It comes with a splash of authenticity, a sprinkling of cheekiness and a generous dose of oomph. Oh, yeah, and double letter ligatures, plus a few alternates as well.

The Scriptorium got its start in the early days of personal computers with a few font designs for the Commodore 64, and the very first font which we did back then in the early 1980s was a gothic calligraphy font. That style of fonts - the medieval, gothic and black letter genre - has always been the backbone of our collection, but with recent releases we've stayed away from them to introduce a bit more variety. Well, with our new Zauberer font the antique, medieval and gothic look is back with a vengeance. Zauberer isn't a true medieval calligraphy style. It's based on early printed type from Germany which combines calligraphic elements with decorative embellishments from the woodcut printing era. The result is decorative and antique looking and rather appealing. The name comes from the German word for a magician or illusionist.

Halfway There… We love to go camping as a family and we usually go to France (because France is only a 5 hour drive from where we live, it is usually sunny and they have the best bread in the world - enough said!). Somewhere around Lille, or Luxembourg City (depending on our destination in France), the kids always ask: ‘are we almost there?’ and my answer is always: ‘we’re halfway there!’.
