I am a firm believer in the fact that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So, for the last 10 years (ever since I became a father), I have been serving my family a healthy breakfast. I live in The Netherlands, so the main portion of breakfast is bread, but I try to serve something ‘nice’ every day. Like strawberries, yoghurt with banana and brown sugar (not too much sugar!), oatmeal porridge or granola. I myself like Indonesian fried rice (nasi goreng) for breakfast, but I am afraid my kids won’t eat that in the morning… Power Breakfast is a handmade display font. Yes, it is wobbly, yes, it is uneven, but that’s what’s so darn good about it!

This big family summarizes and develops the tradition of boldface squared-off 45° shear sanserifs. Known from the middle of 19th century and actively used in different times (1920s, 1970s) is still usable now, thanks to its brutal expression, monumentality and possibility to fully maximize the flatness without loss of readability. This font is especially good for filling letters with photos or to create geometrical “constructivist” compositions.

Rummaging through the toolbox recently, I was surprised by how many allen keys I had from years of assembling flat-pack furniture. After some experimenting with the keys to make up individual letters I was struck by their graphic quality. The typeface is defined by the slim, right-angled shape of the allen key; creating a geometrical, yet playful font. The typeface is suitable for logos and feature headings.

The font name comes from the Dutch word "Rijk" meaning "rich". I'd like you to consider Rijk as a good Pinot Noir: medium bodied, offering succulent juicy berry flavors, accentuated by delicate aromas of coffee and vanilla oak. Ruby red in color, it boasts of velvety tannins and a long fulfilling fruity aftertaste. Rijk has a structure that is delicate and fresh. The aromatics are very fruity like cherry, strawberry, and plum, often with notes of tea-leaf, damp earth, or worn leather… My intent was to create a script that is rich, while not overbearing. It will serve many noble and useful purposes because of its fresh and lively texture. It is also very legible because it has a slightly more upright angle. Glaser Stencil is a perfect summation of both Modernist proportion and New York-style solidity and self-assurance. A font drawn in a rounded rectangle looks modern – if we do not mind that it was in vogue mainly in the 80s of the last century and was created in the fifties, when various Italian designers noticed that the outline of a glass TV screen is actually the letter “o“. Since then, this progressive idea has undergone many improvements, which can be summarized in the notion of “popular-scientific typographic revival”. The present incarnation called “Superscience” has the advantage of having extreme variations and nicely simplified letters, as well as the usual repertoire of OTF functions and playful variations.

VLNL Gaufre is a pixel-based font with holes designed by Donald Roos. Each character is built on a grid of doughnut-like elements, which makes it look like a kind of dried dog food, or Belgian waffles. Despite the grid Gaufre still has enough warmth due to the doughy, slightly rounded corners. And because it’s prepared with a hot waffle iron of course. Chocolatte font is a yummy, creamy script font, made entirely with chocolate.. No, sorry, that’s not true. It was made with a pen, but I thought I’d create a nice urban myth. Chocolatte is a pretty useful font: you can stick it on your X-mas cards, write a little poem with it and surprise the love of your life with an enormous amount of chocolate, decorate your cake with it (preferably a chocolate cake) or use it for your… well, whatever. Just remember that this delicious font cannot be eaten, but it does come with copious amounts of diacritics for all you chocoholics out there!

Vinetters has letters on the alternating leaves of a vine. It is monospaced and uses the OpenType contextual alternatives (calt) feature to alternate leaves as the vine snakes its way across the page, putting leaves with the base down between leaves with the base up. The family has two styles, one with transparent leaves and the other with solid leaves, and these two styles can be used in layers to add color. The family has a large set of accented characters but omits some symbols that are used primarily in technical text. Spaces between words can be left blank or filled with connecting vine using the brackets, trademark-infinity, doubledagger-summation, radical-approximatelyequal, or fi-fl characters. The characters on the leaves are derived from the typeface IngrianaCasual. Topics for which using Vinetters may be appropriate include trees, plants, leaves, nature, changing seasons, and outdoor life.

Walking around Paris looking for inspiration for our latest people font, we encountered chic Parisians, yummy food markets, and bakeries on virtually every street corner with delicious baguettes and pastries. We were surprised how many people were cycling, motorcycling and rollerblading along the vast boulevards and side streets of Paris. We spotted classic French cars like the 2CV and Citroën CX and watched the world go by in one of the many sidewalk cafes whilst enjoying a 1664 or a café crème. With our latest people font, Paris, we tried to capture this unique Parisian atmosphere and hope we succeeded. All 64 illustrations are based on photographs taken on location over a period of time. The photographs are then hand traced to create high quality, detailed silhouettes.

Alecko is a distinctive didone-style typeface, which is strongly influenced by calligraphy, but is at the same time drawn with mathematical precision. Berimbau is a whimsical narrow hand-drawn typeface. It’s stylish, versatile and loaded with amazing OpenType features that do their magic in OpenType savvy applications. Its sprightly swashes and twisting stylistic alternates (say that 3 times fast!) play together to deliver a really cool contextual feature that, in a push-button way, substitutes the first letter in a word with its left swash version and the last letter with its right swash version (please type a space before and after the words).The feature also applies stylistic variants to some of the intermediate letters. Which button to push? The Contextual Alternates one! If you're not a one-click-way-person you can pick your preferred glyphs through the glyphs palette. There you’ll find at least 4 variations for each letter: left swash, right swash and 2 regular forms that correspond to the upper and lower case keys. Some letters also have a 5th variation that acts as stylistic alternate. Synthesizers are very refined and the music is very catchy. The Macintosh and MTV are making waves. Brands are lifestyles. "Yuppy," Yummy," "Bobo," "Dinky" and "Woopie" are standard consumer categories in advertising lingo. The Volkswagen identity, only 5 years old now, is all the rage in design. VAG Rundschrift, by all appearances a rounded and slightly condensed Futura, is everywhere. Tube design is king. Fast forward two dozen years. Replay, but bigger and much louder. Fab. Let's dance. Fab is Canada Type's tribute to the Eighties. It's a five-font unicase family that brings tube design into the 21st century. The main font is an all-in-one treatment of the shiny roundness that the 1980s were. Fab White is a tightly packed thick outline font that conveys luscious contentedness like nothing else. The Fab Trio package is very useful for layered and colorful design, with the Black style serving as a backdrop, the Bold style as the front forms, and the Fill style for inlining.
