In August of 2009, I was commissioned by Zoo York, a New York City based skateboard company, to visit Buenos Aires to study and document street typography. As soon as my taxi driver took the bustling street Entre Ríos, it was clear that the city and I were going to be good friends. Many of the independently owned businesses on Entre Ríos are adorned with handmade signage. These signs are painted in a style called Fileteado which is a century-old Argentinian type of lettering and floral ornamentation. Nowadays, Fileteado is still a prominent part of the city’s landscape, coloring the façades of restaurants, bars and coffee shops. Calaveras and Diablitos are two new typefaces that were inspired by Fileteado. Stylistically, the fonts are a return to a rhythmic and playful sensibility reminiscent of Vitrina and Cuba, two fonts that I designed in 1996. Along with dynamism and dance, these new fonts incorporate a rigor and functionality essential to labelling any font a ‘workhorse.’ The names Calaveras and Diablitos, came from the name of a song by the infamous Buenos Aires rock band, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. —Pablo A. Inspired by the elegant, rounded geometry of classic sans-serifs like Harry™ and Cirkulus™, Evcial was designed in 2000 to serve as the logo font for EVCco's website. Manolo was a Ludwig & Mayer in-house design from the beginning of the 20th century. Though more formal than many others, the design keeps its Art Nouveau air. This beautiful font was completely redrawn and redesigned with giving the numerals more style. Two stippled border elements were added which you can reach by typing [alt] + P and [alt] + p. Like most fonts of this era, RMU Manolo comes with a long s too. RMU Manolo encompasses most European languages, Central and West, plus Turkish.

Butan was originally designed as a typographic project for the Specialization in Typography Design at the University of Buenos Aires, during the years 2013 and 2014. The project was conceived as a “wayfinding” font, that would be functional for bilingual signage systems. The main guideline for its design was to create a font that could be readable from great distances and it could be potentially used in signage systems. Therefore the neutral aesthetics and clean shapes were very relevant in order to create this particular font.

Zootype –the first original single font– was designed in 1997 by Victor Garcia of Argentina and as a winner of Linotype's Second International Type Design Contest is included in the TakeType Library. The three additional family styles –Zootype Air, Zootype Land, Zootype Water– were added in 1999. In the words of the designer, the design concept is meant to display the funny, happy joy of animal nature.’ Animal heads peek into the block forms of the letters, giving the font a unique whimsical character.

Inklination is a new grotesque that goes against the 'genre rules' and has a low x-height. It breathes quite better than larger x-height typefaces, with the sensation of air and more whitespace. This, combined with long ascenders and descenders, makes it look luxurious, elegant and refined. This family was created -- inspired from the engraved typeface (Two styles : Normal & Italic) used in the pack of 52 playing cards who was describing the 52 counties forming a small Atlas of England and Wales and depicting English roads for the first time, published by Sir Robert Morden in 1676. Our OTF and TTF versions are covering Western, Eastern and Central European languages (including Celtic), Baltic and Turkish, containing historical and standard ligatures plus specific Old English abbreviations. Sir Richard Henry Bonnycastle (1791–1847) was an English officer and military engineer who served in the War of 1812 and ultimately settled in Canada. I stumbled upon copies of some of his charts and maps, became infatuated with the hand-lettered titles—and the result is the eponymous Bonnycastle. The font has a bold weight and an italic style but is intended as an eye-catching standalone, evocative of its period in history. Modern antiqua (Victorian, Scotch Roman) «Dodo», 2008–2019. Named so as a portmanteau of Bodoni – Didot. XIX-th century fonts, especially Victorian antiquas, were almost excluded from the modern use by their XX-th century's descendants. And these new books had lost too much of their former beauty, elegance. Their old noble spirit. This project, «Dodo» was started in 2008 year as the first then modern revival for the Old Imperial Russian book scotch antiqua, used 120–170 years ago in almost every printed book. Still keeping the spirit of the Steam æra.

Vicentina has been created starting from gothic cursive calligraphy, widely used in Italy during XIV century. The ductus of Vicentina has been derived from the documents redacted by Master Domenico Dominici from Vicenza, while most of the inspiration comes from books preserved in the archives of Orvieto Cathedral (Archivi dell'Opera del Duomo di Orvieto). As a result, Vicentina takes form with an elegant, but fast and simplified ductus respect to gothic graphs, rich in ligatures and with over 400 OpenType glyphs, in perfect harmony with the rules of readability of a modern typeface.

Informal does not have to mean aggressively modern or casual. Helenium is inspired by some hand drawn capitals that I found added to a 19th century map. It's a great font for informal titles and headings that still keep an air or regularity and ever so slightly period elegance. It manages to be formal and casual all at once, as well as classical and modern. Helenium's range of different weights and drop shadow effects make it useful for hierarchical titles and headings. Helenium miniscule adds greater flexibility by extending the family with a fun range of rounded lower case forms.

The Confetti is a typeface created about 1930 by the defunct José Iranzo foundry in Barcelona, and imitates the forms and gestures of handwriting created with a round nib as “Speedball”Series B. The original typefaces were a pair, called “Escritura Energica ” and “Escritura maravilla”. The typography has a dynamic air, caused partially by irregular alignment of the characters respect to the baseline and aesthetics takes us to the proposed commercial lettering or advertising of years 20-30. Confetti was one of the fonts selected by the website Typographica.org in its prestigious list of “Our Favorite Typefaces” in 2006.

The typeface was designed at ParaType (ParaGraph) in 1997 by Manvel Shmavonyan for Russian primary school sample writing schoolbooks. The typeface is based on script fonts presented in the book 'Rodnoy Mir' by. L.I.Tikunova. The first version of the font included just letters of Russian alphabet and basic set of figures and signs. The second version with extended set of alphabetic letterforms was developed in 2004 by Gennady Fridman. Current third version that covers full Cyrillic and Western code pages was prepared by Gennady Fridman and released in 2009. Medium style also was added by him in 2009.

Anavio is named in honor of the ancient Roman name of an English Derbyshire town. Anavio is a classically inspired family of Roman faces, emphasizing simplicity of form and elegance. ITC Grimshaw Hand is based on the handwriting of its British designer, Phill Grimshaw. Warm and lively, this typeface has the look of spontaneous handwriting with a little extra panache.
