Wolverhampton is a new Neo-Victorian face from Greater Albion Typefounders. It's something of an example of starting with a small idea and running with it. Just look at my ink traps Ink traps are normally the preserve of fonts intended for printing at small sizes, in newspapers or directories – extra notches necessary to prevent ink from pooling. FS Rufus turns the ink trap into a beautiful eccentricity, flaunting it in both its lowercase and capitals. Take a look at the “h”, “a” and “k”, and the “B” and “N”. Attention-seeking? Moi?

Type designer Hannes von Döhren created Klint. A sans serif typeface with a technical appearance and humanistic streak. The family includes five weights; each weight ships in three widths: condensed, regular, and extended. All of the 15 Klint variants have a companion Italic, rounding out family at 30 fonts. Klint's large x-height makes the design especially legible at small point sizes. In today's day and age, appliance manufacturers and/or companies in the mobile phone, computer hardware and software or Internet sectors are becoming ever more important. Klint fills the rising need for superfamilies with a technical feeling that are also legible in both text and display settings. Through conspicuous letters like R, K, k, or g, as well as the independent nature of its Italic, Klint exudes an ethos that separates it from the competition. Longer text passages in brochures, catalogs, or magazines would be well served by Klint's Light, Regular, and Medium weights. The heavier cuts are optimized for poster settings and headlines."

Katsudon is a Japanese crumbed and deep fried pork cutlet, typically served on rice with egg drizzled over it. There is also a chicken variety. I have been to Japan numerous times (it is my favourite country) and each time I revelled in the great variety of foods being served in street stalls and hole-in-the-wall eateries. I especially love the grandma-and-grandpa eateries that are tucked away in alleys behind the major shopping streets. They never speak English and my Japanese is shaky (to say the least), but the food is always good and we always seem to understand each other. This year, I couldn’t travel to Japan, because of the Covid outbreak, but I can tell you that I miss Japan a lot! Katsudon is a crumbed and deep fried font. It comes with a splash of authenticity, a sprinkling of cheekiness and a generous dose of oomph. Oh, yeah, and double letter ligatures, plus a few alternates as well.

I decided to remake this font, smoothing out a few rough edges - so to speak - and adding value to the end result, with several different interesting tweaks and updates. Many of the fonts available from Canada Type are revivals of historic brush scripts (such as Bruschetta, Coffee Script, Puma, Tiger Script). Hunter is a deserved addition to the collection. Imre Reiner's Mustang design from 1956 now enters the digital realm to continue living in this world of new typography. Hunter has a wilder streak than other brush scripts. Its irregular terminals give it an almost wooden appearance and a most natural, hand-made expression. Those who read texts written in this font may well have their lives strangely changed. I have included a complete character set of 242 characters; upper and lower case; as well as all accented and special characters. All characters have been carefully letterspaced and kerned. CoolKids was inspired by the song “Signs of Life” by Arcade Fire. Since the lyrics talk about some cool kids we wondered what a typeface with the name cool kids would look like. We immediately knew it had to be laid back yet bold and to stand out from the crowd. After designing the bold script we decided to include a light, regular and medium weight to offer you more options for your designs. It comes with initial and final alternates, that show up automatically, to make it feel more natural and similar to handwriting. Every character was carefully drawn and connections are real smooth. This casual font-family speaks most Latin languages, both in their basic and alternate forms. CoolKids is great for creating logos, packaging, posters and much more. “Fanfare is such a fun typeface,” says Toshi Omagari, who revived the design for The Wolpe Collection. “It was my happiest discovery when I was digging through the Monotype archive. I came across it and had to check the designer’s name.” No wonder: Fanfare is modern, light and playful – not what you’d expect from an 80-year old design. From the original, very heavy weight design, Omagari started by creating a black weight, followed by four lighter weights for Wolpe Fanfare, preserving the character of the letterforms all the way down to a thin version. “I wanted to do more than digitize the original weight,” he says. “It’s surprisingly modern, and its skeleton, its basic structure, is so beautiful.” The new design packs more into a small space than most typefaces. It’s a natural for publication and advertising design. With displays capable of revealing fine details such as Fanfare’s subtly slanted baseline, its lovely forms will easily translate to mobile devices. With an extended European character set that includes Greek and Cyrillic language support, Wolpe Fanfare can speak in many languages.

A modern black-letter, so to speak. Composed of a few basic elements with a wide-quill ductus. Faber Fraktur was based on the idea that it must be possible to create a modern black-letter type. The typeface is ”constructed“ according to the same principles as a script without serifs: as few varied basic forms as possible, omission of frills which make the type difficult to read and repetition of similar forms. The typical contrasting strokes of the original handwritten black-letter script are retained nonetheless. The elements of this typeface were even pre-formed with the quill. All characters are reduced to their basic skeleton. The fanciness and manifold ”breaks“ or fractures typical of black-letter typefaces are considerably reduced to just a few essentials. Faber Fraktur is a very legible type perfectly suitable for long texts. It does not appear nearly as foreign and archaic as the old black-letter fonts. The capital letters especially have a charm of their own radiating a kind of playfulness in spite of their severe form.

ULGA Grid Solid is the sharp, blockier sibling of ULGA Grid and ULGA Grid Rounded. The typeface consists of three weights, regular, medium and bold, with corresponding oblique styles. The ANATOLE FRANCE retains the hand script character in spite of its stringent composition. An old portfolio of script patterns from the 1920s or 1930s, which appeared in the Georg D. W. Callwey Publishing House in Munich, includes among its pages one with a handwritten poster script, as was very typical for the 1920s.
