Up until the advent of modern packing and shipping methods, the common way to mark merchandise or other items to be transported was through the use of a brass stencil. These marking devices were hand stamped (or punched) using metal dies that were struck against sheets of brass to create the letters, numbers and other symbols [unlike the steel rule die cutting method used for manufacturing paper stencils]. One such example of an antique marking stencil had letters and numbers approximately one quarter of an inch in height, and Stamped Brass Stencil JNL recreates the design complete with the unusual variations of character shapes and widths.

The seventeenth century Dutch old faces have a distinct character of their own, and were the source for eighteenth century English type designs, such as Caslon. Christoffel van Dijck was one of the great Dutch typefounders, although this face, which bears his name, may not have been cut by him, it is nevertheless representative of the best designs from that period. The Van Dijck italic, for which original punches survive, is almost certainly the work of van Dijck. Drawn at Monotype under the supervision of Jan van Krimpen. The Van Dijck font is a graceful typeface, best used for setting books, quality magazines and articles.

Font Makenn01 is inspired by Asen Petrov’s Perfograma font , based on in the IBM Harvard Mark 1 machines the first electromagnetic computer presented by Howard Aiken this november 84 years ago ,in fact this basic technology received its instructions and data trough punched tapes . It is therefore an interpretation in wich circumferences have been used instead of circles linked with a line , and the name used also refers to Mark 1 calling it Makenn 01 , giving a touch of identity since this name resembles , Carmen my name , the 01, is like a restart of 0 , with the 1 of the Mark 1. It has Greek and Cyrillic characters.

Kodama are spirits in Japanese folklore that inhabit trees. The term is also used for trees in which a kodama houses. Kodama Forest is a rough, spikey and inky font, in the style of the great Ralph Steadman. Kodama Forest comes with a bunch of alternates, some interesting ligatures and a lot of splatter. And, of course, all the diacritics you can throw a tree spirit at.

Finding my long-lost inkwell was a lucky moment for me and it resulted in a whole bunch of brushy/inky fonts. The latest font to leak out of this well is Knockdown. Tea And Oranges is a line from Leonard Cohen’s song Suzanne. “She feeds you tea and oranges that come all the way from China”… The song was a favourite of my brother Rizja who, sadly, recently passed away. St Friska, based on old movie title lettering, is made just for headlines. It comes with a slight touch and feeling of art deco but it’s designed to be contemporary in 2010 and beyond. Framboisier means ‘Rasberry Bush’ in French. Even though it’s early spring, I already spotted raspberries at the greengrocers, so I figured a nice raspberry-related name would suit this font just fine. Framboisier is a hand painted script font. It’s a little messy, a little shaky, but legible and cute as well. Comes with all the diacritics and a whole bunch of alternate glyphs.

Mission Accomplished is a fast and furious kind of font. I started jotting down letters with a marker pen as fast as I could to see what would come out. Well, this font came out. Mission Accomplished can be used virtually anywhere, but single origin coffee bean packaging and artisan marmalade labels come to mind. Comes with a bunch of cute discretionary ligatures as well!

In the middle of 18th century Leibniz Fraktur appeared in German print shops. This blackletter font with its great x-height preserved the then fashioned trunk in many of its uppercase letters. It was a cast font of Genzsch & Heyse, Hamburg. Leibniz Fraktur contains a bunch of useful ligatures, and by typing 'N', 'o' and period plus activating the Ordinals feature you get an oldstyle number-sign.

Montello started out as an Illustrator exercise (a skill I am still learning). I made a couple of glyphs for fun, then realised it would make a nice font. The result is Montello. Montello is a classic connected script font, very neat and (in my humble opinion) not an eye-sore either. Montello comes with a whole bunch of ligatures for letters that just won’t connect nicely.

Bernhard Blackletter can be compared to a tuba, adding its deep bass sound to the orchestra of blackletter fonts. This font contains a bunch of useful ligatures, and to access all, it is recommended to activate both Standard and Discretionary Ligatures. You find the round s on the # key, and typing the combination N-o-period and activating the OT feature Ordinals gets you the numero sign.

Valibuk is a compact clean typeface for headlines and short text. No details are small and it’s a bunch of details that make Valibuk as it is. It’s a heavy, condensed face with a high x-height and tight spacing and that’s why Valibuk can write loud. The quality of the spacing and kerning is ensured by Igino Marini. Lomidrevo is a grunge stencil family derived from Valibuk.

Mysterious is a bit of an unusual font. It looks old fashioned, but it comes with cool stylistic alternates, it could be a didone, but it is not (really), it looks formal, but it is rather scary. Mysterious was more or less based on the titling pages of 17th century atlases and my own twisted imagination. It comes with a whole bunch of ligatures and stylistic alternates, plus extensive language support.

I have always liked Weeping Willows, they sort of remind me of China. During my years as a tour guide, I spent a lot of time in China and I can tell you that the Chinese love weeping willows - they plant them everywhere! Weeping Willow was created using a Japanese brush pen (bought in China actually…). It comes with double letter ligatures and a bunch of swashes as well.

I just love biscotti; they’re one of my favourite cookies! I thought they were all rock hard and half-moon shaped, but I found out that there’s a ‘soft’ variety as well, mainly aimed at young children who may have trouble munching on the hard cookies. Soft Biscotti is a handmade, all caps font. It comes with extensive language support and a set of alternates for the lower case letters.

I am not a very romantic type (pun intended…), but a slightly slanted connected script always looks as if it was made for romance! Eastern family, sans serif fonts designed with a vintage print look. Rounded edges and imperfections were added to the characters to give a vintage vibe. In the late 1920s Walter Tiemann cut this font for Klingspor Brothers in Offenbach am Main. It comes close to Luthersche Fraktur and, though quite slender, possesses a good gray value and readability. This blackletter font fits excellently into narrow columns. Kleist Fraktur contains a bunch of useful ligatures, and by typing 'N - o - period', marking this combination and activating OT feature Ordinals you get an oldstyle numbersign.

The Monotype Janson font family is based on types originally cut by the Hungarian punch-cutter, Nicolas Kis circa 1690. Named after Anton Janson, a Dutch printer. The original matrices came into the hands of the Stempel foundry in Germany in 1919. New type was cast and proofs made; these were used as the source for Monotype's version of Janson. The original hand cut Janson types have a number of small design irregularities which give the typeface its unique charm. These have been carefully incorporated into the new version. The overall effect is of even color and an easy readability that makes Monotype Janson most at home in book and publishing work.

Sideroad is an intensive hand-drawn brush script font. It comes in two versions, Textured and Smooth. Textured version has this rough effect that comes when letters are drawn with pointed-brush on rugged surface. The Smooth version is, like the name says, smooth as silk with polished edges and properly drawn forms. Sideroad includes two sets of lower case letters to give variation and more imperfect hand-drawn effect. You can cycle these two sets by enabling Contextual Alternates OpenType feature. Limoen means 'lemon' in Dutch. Why did I call this font Limoen? Well, I guess I ran out of meaningful names, so I had to work with whatever popped in my head - which happened to be Limoen.
