According to Wikipedia, Tin Pan Alley is the name given to the collection of New York City music publishers and songwriters who dominated the popular music of the United States in the late 19th century and early 20th century. The name originally referred to a specific place: West 28th Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in Manhattan. With this in mind, Tin Pan Alley JNL, a typeface based on the bold hand lettering from a vintage piece of sheet music is aptly named.

Mak is a display font with a Ukrainian feeling inspired by Ukrainian music. This is a big update of the first free two styles of Mak (SemiBold High & Black High) that were created in 2019 and become widespread among free display fonts. The big update wasn't been only adding more weights and contrasts but also changing a lot of glyphs and adding new ones. Now Mak supports all Latin-based languages and European Cyrillic. Experiments with historical forms, contrasts, and daring shapes to create a new image of Ukrainian Cyrillic and Latin based on it.

"País" is a contemporary and modern grotesque sans serif, inspired by the grotesques of the early 20th century, but more geometric and with a wider x-height than its referents; making it ideal for the current times. "País" comes in 2 versions, each with 9 weights, from thin to black, and matching italics, for a total of 36 fonts. The standard sans serif version is fresh, clean, and more ideally neutral. Paz, a squarish 4-weight industrial family, ranging from extreme hairline to black. It is ideal for editorial headlines where type plays a major role in the overall design. The fonts were designed by Ariel Di Lisio and digitized by Alejandro Paul.

Opake™ is an experimental typeface design that steps away from regular design conventions. Instead of basing the design on a calligraphic tool or geometric shapes, Opake™ is the result of the exercise of creating letters with a single continuous loop line. This unseen technique makes the overall design very unique. Though unconventional, the design resonates with some familiarity because of its calligraphic stroke terminations and some shape decisions that might resemble Cooper Black. In the end Opake™ is a cutting edge non-connecting script font, with a warm and happy feeling. Ideal for large headlines and general display use, but also branding, posters and apparel. Pax is clearly a didone, using Vox classification. The contrast between the thin lines and the thicker ones is noticeable, as you would expect from a didone. The basic form is relatively narrow, therefore I designed another Pax, slightly wider and darker, and called it Pax #2. Otherwise they are more or less identical. Pax is Latin for peace, on everyone's want list in 1995 - as well as every single year before and after that. Pax was released in 1995.

Empresario Stephen F. Austin (1793-1836) is considered by many the “Father of Texas” for leading the first Anglo-American colony into the then-Mexican territory back in the 1820s. A few years later, while on a diplomatic mission to Mexico City, Austin was arrested on suspicion of plotting Texas independence and imprisoned for virtually all of 1834. During this time he kept a secret diary of his thoughts and musings—much of it written in Spanish. Austin Pen is my interpretation of Austin’s scribblings in this miniature prison journal (now in the collection of the wonderful Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, in the Texas city that bears his name). The little leather-bound book is filled with notes in ink and pencil—some of the faded penciled pages traced in ink years later by Austin’s nephew Moses Bryan. A genuine replication of 19th century cursive, Austin Pen has two styles: a fine regular weight, along with a bold style that replicates passages written with an over-inked pen. Each is legible and evocative of commonplace American penmanship of two centuries ago.

Douglass Pen was inspired by the handwriting of Frederick Douglass, who was born an American slave but died a distinguished 19th century statesman, orator, and abolitionist leader. He also had fine penmanship. Douglass Pen is modeled chiefly after Douglass's handwritten account of John Brown's famous 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia. It simulates his somewhat condensed cursive, dashed off in a swift, bold style. The OpenType release has more than 800 glyphs, including scores of ligatures, alternative upper cases, inkblots, crossouts, and Eastern European characters.

After doing this for so many years, one would think my fascination with the old history of writing would have mellowed out by now. The truth is that alongside being a calligraphy history buff, I'm a pop technology freak. Maybe even keener on the tech thing, since I just can't seem to get enough new gadgets. And after working with type technologies for so many years, I'm starting to think that writing and design technologies as we now know them, being about 2.5 post-computer generations, keep becoming more and more detached from what the very old humanity arts/tasks they essentially want to facilitate. In a world where command-z is a frequently used key combination, it’s difficult to justify expecting a Morris-made book or a Zaner-drawn sentence, but accidental artistic “mutations” become welcome, marketable features. When fluid pens were introduced, their liquid saturation influenced type design to a great extent almost overnight an influence professional designers tend to play down. Now round stroke endings are a common sight, and the saturation is so clean and measured, unlike any liquid-paper relationship possible in reality. Some designers even illustrate their work by overlaying perfect circles at stroke ends, in order to illustrate how “geometric” their work was. Because if it’s measured with precise geometry, it’s got to be meaningful design. And once in a while, by a total freak accident, the now-cherished mutations prove to have existed long before the technology that caused them. Rolling Pen was cued by just such a thing: A rounded, circular, roll-flowing calligraphy from the late nineteenth century seemingly one of those experimental takes on what inspired Business Penmanship, another font of mine. Looking at it now it certainly seems to be friendlier, more legible, and maybe even more practical and easier to execute than the standard business penmanship of those days, but I guess friendliness and simplicity were at odds with the stiff manner business liked to present itself back then, so that kind of thing remained buried in the professional penman’s oddities drawer. It would be quite a few years before all this curviness and rounding were thought of as symbolic of graceful movement, which brought such a flow closer to the idea of fine art. Even though in this case the accidental mutation just happens to not be a mutation after all, the whole technology-transforms-application argument still applies here. I'm almost sure “business” will be the last thing on people’s minds when they use this font today. One extreme example of that level of disconnect between origin and current application is shown here, with the so-called business penmanship strutting around in gloss and neon. Rolling Pen is another cup of mine that runneth over with alternates, swashes, ligatures, and other techy perks. Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar had an exotic name for a historic Texan, but he left his mark beginning in 1836, the year of Texas independence and the first year that pioneers other than mountain men made their way West. Lamar went on to become the young republic’s first elected vice-president (to President Houston) and second president -- and to author a number of interesting letters in his elegant, stylish hand. (Mirabeau B. Lamar grew up a well-to-do southerner from Georgia, and his penmanship shows it.) One of the most interesting aspects of designing old handwriting fonts, to me, is pausing to reflect on the actual moment that the letter-writer is sitting at his or her desk or table, pen in hand, putting thoughts to words -- 150 to 200 years ago. Has a complete character set, and plenty more.

Early Texas patriots had fascinating penmanship. In researching Texas Hero years ago, I had occasion to pore over copies of letters by the likes of Stephen F. Austin, William B. Travis, Thomas J. Rusk, and others. Austin's hand was pretty messy. Young, brave Travis wrote his last during the Alamo siege. Rusk's suited my original task. But a couple other styles caught my eye -- among them the bold yet graceful strokes of Sam Houston, the prototypical Texas Hero. Houston Pen has a complete character set.
