Linotype Laika is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. This fun font was created by Dutch designer Mark van Wageningen, who based its forms on those of a sans serif font but gave them wavy, irregular contours. Pardesi font is named after a song from Raja Hindustani, a 1996 Bollywood movie directed by Dharmesh Darshan. The lead roles were played by Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor. TapedUp, Tinkerer, and Rumpled are based on the template I used for several letterbat fonts—fonts made of wrenches and bolts, hammers, or paper clips. TapedUp can be thought of as a font made from masking tape, and Rumpled is the same design but the tape pieces are wavy. Tinkerer is the same design but with elements that resemble what might happen if one constructed letters from Tinker Toys. All are caps only, but some of the shapes on the lower-case keys differ from the corresponding shapes on the upper-case keys. The Rumpled family has four members, the regular, an oblique, a shadowed, and an oblique shadowed.

The concept is “Geo-Soft”: characters are constructed from arcs of circle connected by orthogonal straight lines, with few diagonals and nary a sharp corner. Kathmandu, the Nepalese capital in the foothills of the Himalayas, is not like any other city. That's why Kathmandu Bold is not like any other font going by the name of a town, either: This font is not as digital as Chicago but not as solid as Aachen. Kathmandu Bold's capital letters are slightly irregular, giving the font its unique character, which is extended and more black than bold. Everyone who has hitherto regarded "naïve" and "cool" as being an oppositional pair should check out this font by Ingo Juergens. Binner was designed by John F. Cumming in 1898 and is an alphabet with a strongly historic character. It takes the reader back to the early part of the 20th century, when typefaces of this kind could be found in advertisements on houses and posters. The robust figures display a marked stroke contrast. Particularly striking are the high middle strokes of the E and F as well as the wavy connecting stroke of the H. The curves of the R and P extend well into the lower third of the characters. With its robust figures, Binner is best used for headlines in middle and larger point sizes.

Little Cecily was designed on the base of a Russian calligraphy sample book for primary schools “Propisi pryamogo pis’ma” (Moscow, 1914). Such kind of scripts were implemented in school programs at the end of 19th-beginning of 20th century. There was an opinion that the straight writing is easier for learning and better for children from a medical point of view. The letterforms of the typeface are characterized by simplified constructions and upright design which distinguishes it from the list of typical school scripts and convey to it a naive charm and originality. The character set covers standard Western and Cyrillic code pages and it includes alternative letters and contextual forms for connected writing.

The other day I was at a market with my kids and they had this really retro kind of circus thing. Gross Kunst is a humanist sans-serif with an open aperture, sharp outlines, and eye-catching details that make this full of character typeface very recognizable. The type family has three fonts based on wide pen strokes. Depending on its purpose the styles differ in expressiveness and the level of ornamentation. Regular style—low-contrast and neutral—is the most natural choice for body-text. The display face is more dynamic and gets higher contrast. FinalSix is the typographic adaptation of a lettering. Working on the graphic image for a sports event (the European Waterpolo Final in 2014) we had the idea of creating a character set that reflected the idea of the undulating movement of water in a pool. In practice, we draw characters with rounded tops, bottoms and diagonals and using the word WATERPOLO as a visual reference for a wavy feeling, in a process that we could define as “form follows meaning.” To preserve its personality as much as possible, the most idiosyncratic characters are found in the Default set, while we can find more standardized variations for editorial use in a Stylistic set.

Genia is a script typeface that carries roundhand calligraphy DNA. Instead of using pointed nib pen, Genia was created using a fine brush resulting in clean and wavy character. With the OpenType features, Genia creates the natural feel of calligraphy writing. This contextual feature makes the font 'smart'. It knows which letters are the initial and which one is the finial. The feature can be activated in the OpenType section under the names of CALT or Contextual Alternates. Genia also gives you old style and proportional number options. Our advice is always turn the contextual alternates, and don't use the OPTICAL kerning on Adobe softwares. The preview on this site does not support the contextual alternates.

We count three inspirations for the László font family. The upper case was inspired by Yomar Augusto’s amazing font Unity, used on last year’s German World Cup Team jerseys; the lower case from a few letters a poster for a Bauhaus show. The name László is an homage to László Moholy-Nagy, peerless Bauhaus designer and teacher. The László type family is stripped down to the typographic core, lean, clean and definitely machined, at home in either a formal or casual setting, i.e. you can take László anywhere. Inspired by watching the World Cup and the German Team’s jerseys. Very clean, simple, Bauhaus-style design, European and highly legible. Usage recommendations Automobile ads, anywhere a European feel is desired.

First of all, let me get one thing straight: With Janky Action, I didn’t make any attempt on making a beautiful or good looking font! Janky Action is my humble attempt to recreate a sign I saw at a flea market. The sign was obviously made by someone who didn’t give a darn about the width of strokes, height of letters, and other “rules” when making a sign. I fell in love with the naive approach on how to make a sign. In order to create some randomness, I have added 4 different versions of each lowercase letter. I hope you find this font as enjoyable as I did while making it! :)

I am a firm believer in the fact that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So, for the last 10 years (ever since I became a father), I have been serving my family a healthy breakfast. I live in The Netherlands, so the main portion of breakfast is bread, but I try to serve something ‘nice’ every day. Like strawberries, yoghurt with banana and brown sugar (not too much sugar!), oatmeal porridge or granola. I myself like Indonesian fried rice (nasi goreng) for breakfast, but I am afraid my kids won’t eat that in the morning… Power Breakfast is a handmade display font. Yes, it is wobbly, yes, it is uneven, but that’s what’s so darn good about it!

Weaving is a family in which the letters fit together so that wavy lines separate them both horizontally and vertically. It creates this effect by alternating letters on upper-case keys with those on lower-case letters and this alternating is done automatically in applications that support the OpenType feature of contextual alternatives (calt). (The upper-case can be used alone but it unlikely that the lower-case characters could be used by themselves.) The family is a thinner and condensed version of the typeface Woven, but in condensing it, the tessellation properties that a were in Woven are lost. It is a decorative display face but because there are few typefaces similar to it, it is hard to predict what uses it may have. Be creative!

Yet again, a font inspired by my work as a kindergarten teacher! The other day, I had a conversation with some of the kids, about what they ate for breakfast. Some had oatmeal, some bread and others yogurt. But this kid - he insisted that every morning, his mother would serve him cookies, “morning cookies”. It sounded too good to be true, and when I asked his mother, it turned out that “cookies” were actually bread, but to make it sound more appetising, they called it cookies! The letters are rounded and in some way quite naive, but still clear and legible. With an extreme ascender and descender, the font stands out with its oddities. I’ve added 3 different versions of each lowercase letter!
