In a career spanning the early 1900s through 1940, George M. Cohan wrote and produced over 50 plays, 300 songs and was also an actor, singer and dancer. Many of his works honored his Irish roots, and the cover of one piece of sheet music called “The Irish American” (1905) had its title hand lettered in a condensed Art Nouveau type design with tiny spurred serifs. This is now available digitally as Dress Rehearsal JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Because of the large influx of Irish immigrants during the late 1800s and early 1900s, it was not unusual for songwriters of the day to craft songs around Irish themes, offering a nostalgic link to their homeland. One such 1917 piece entitled "You Brought Ireland Right Over to Me" had the title hand lettered on the sheet music cover in a sans serif design reflecting the popular Art Nouveau movement of the day. Moonlight Serenade is a 1939 song composed by Glenn Miller, with lyrics by Mitchell Parish. Moonlight Serenade font is an all caps affair - very legible, very recognizable and very useful. Start with the basic shapes that almost every design program has. That is, the square is like a finished material. Can be arranged, rotated to get the desired typeface easily.

I drew this font on the computer, and added a few effects for the finishing touches. I named it "Bush!!" just because that is kind of what it looks like.

Chico was by designed by Javier Mariscal and Josema Urós specifically for the final roll of credits in the animated film Chico y Rita. The goal was to design a typeface with a good readability but that conveyed a strong script character and, in some way, tuned to the style of line used throughout the film. Using a modular sans-serif as a template, Javier Mariscal reinterpreted the forms freely, while maintaining gridlike proportions. Chico can be useful for comic-book lettering, editorial work and display applications.
