Gradle Nr. 1 is yet another new art nouveau design in the URW++ library. It was reworked, redesigned, completed and digitally remastered by Ralph M. KgStuttgart1930 -- Kunstgewerbeschule Stuttgart 1930 -- is based on a printed sample of a font designed in 1930 at the Stuttgart School of Applied Arts. Found in the book ABZ, more alphabets and other signs by J. Rothenstein and M. Goodings. I recreated the grid and kept some awkward letters of this bauhaus-era inspired design. I created the missing glyphs and added alternate versions of already existing ones.

At first glance, Else may seem to be similar to many of the Century typefaces, with its prominent figures and sturdy alphabet. But when Robert Norton, of Norton Photosetting Ltd., designed Else in 1982, he added a bit of flair to that basic model. Note the bowl of the g, the splayed legs of the M, the sharply curved G and J, as well as the leading strokes of v and w and both of the graceful ampersands.
