Herold is a bold Art Nouveau advertising face released by H. Berthold, Berlin, Germany in 1901. It is also seen under the name “Herold Reklame.” The design is attributed to Hermann Hoffmann by the Klingspor Museum. A herold (‘herald’ in English, ‘heraldus’ in Latin) is one who delivers proclamations and announcements. Medieval heralds are often pictured with a horn with which to get everyone’s attention prior to performing his function. His only PA system was his own voice. Left and right glyphs of a herald with horn may be found at positions 137 and 172. Herold is quite compact with a high x-height, just right for making -- what else? -- announcements.

Jazmo is an offspring of an assignment I did for a Dutch architect. A classic building and coincidently the place of my studio in my hometown Zwolle, Netherlands, needed to be renovated. My job was to design the house numbers and signs for this building. This building I refer to was built in 1932 and designed according to the ‘New objectivity’ architecture. Now it accommodates several artist and craftsmen and also houses students. In my design I used elements of the Art Nouveau, which is related to the ‘New Objectivity’. Words as stately, angular, linear, stylish, artful, playful and frolic came to mind. It should be a design with a hint of the past and a flirt with the future. This house numbering is the root wherefrom Jazmo arises. The name Jazmo cites to the Jazz scene, which was a new and very popular artistic influence that time and age and is still a vibrant source of musical renewal. Mo stands for my Name Marit Otto. Together with my intern Arie Blok I created the missing characters and completed the font. Welcome Jazmo!

Plaisir came unexpectedly, as in between release while we waited for client's confirmation for their project. After trying a couple of different approaches, Plaisir landed as elegant modern sans serif family with 5 weights and matching Italics. With sharp triangle serifs and wide endings, Plaisir was constructed with decent stem contrast that flirt with display category. It is versatile, legible, recognizable family with fluent Italics. Equipped with Standard Ligatures, Tabular Figures, OldStyle Figures, a few Stylistic Alternates, basic Ordinals and Latin Small Caps, Plaisir is a working horse that will suit in any required situations.

Mrs Summer is a hand drawn narrow typeface with a Western touch. It has only uppercase characters with alternate glyphs in place of lowercase letters and additional alternate glyph in a Stylistic Set. It has build in OpenType Contextual Alternates feature that will automatically set alternate glyphs depending on frequency of appearance of the same character (even in web font but only in HTML5 browsers). The former hot-metal font Sebaldus Gotisch, a 19th century Berthold in-house design, was carefully redesigned and updated for today’s use. This font contains a long s which you can access by typing alt b or by using the historical alternate OTF feature.

Some years ago I was walking along a street on the eastside of Manhattan and stopped in front of an old building that housed a power station. Lotsa Lotta is my version of the concrete letters displayed over the entrance that spoke the buildings purpose.

Based on the text on architect's plans. The designer asked friends and relatives for the plans for their house extensions, and he studied plans in the public library, then blended the best features of all the characters he could find. Architect was designed originally in 1999.

Wayland (Vølund or Völundr) is the mythical blacksmith from Norse mythology. I chose this name, because Wayland is a bulky, sturdy display font. Wayland can be used for many types of design, but headlines, posters and book covers spring to mind. Comes with extensive language support.

XPawnShop is a typographical chess font; the pieces are letters. The Pawn is an awkward letter P, the knight is a horse in the shape of an h, the bishop is a decorative letter B, the rook is an elephant with an R shape, the queen is a Q, and the king is an ornate K. Two other XPawnShop fonts are made of very simple pieces, but as a bonus, both have the set of dominoes from the unicode block 1F030 to 1F093. In the 1970s, Face Photosetting in London was known as the preeminent typesetting house in London. Steve worked in the studio in Newman Street and Hanway Place. El Paso Pro is a family of typefaces based on a unique single font design from the Face Collection, called El Paso.

Derived from the world famous Rennie Mackintosh Font, the Hillhouse version gives a 3D look to the genius of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The "Hillhouse" name comes from one of Mackintosh's most famous architectural works - the Hill House in Helensburgh, Scotland. This stunning conceptual design can be visited from April to October.

A vintage photo (circa 1950s) taken outside one of the movie houses owned at the time by Miami-based Wometco Theaters showed a small hand lettered sign with the word “Wometco” painted in a stylized Art Deco alphabet. This inspired Theater Lobby JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

A 1934 advertisement for the Roney Plaza Hotel at 23rd Street and Collins Avenue on Miami Beach yielded the inspiration for Tropical Tourist JNL. While this wonderful example of Art Deco lettering survived, sadly the original Roney was torn down around 1969 and replaced with a modern apartment house/condos bearing the same name.

Belvedere is an Italian word that translates as ‘beautiful outlook’ and describes a pavillion or summer house on high ground with commanding views. It has grace, style and a touch of class, all of which I've tried to incorporate in this font family. The snazzy graphics are by my friend and colleague Dan Austin.

The Book of Kells is a ninth century gospel created in the British Isles and is considered to be the finest existing example of early Celtic art. The book itself is now housed in the Trinity College Library, Dublin. This computer set combines historical accuracy with functional readability and features 72 elements and linking borders.
