Bluenote is a font based on Franklin Gothic condensed. In the 60s and 70s the record label Blue Note published all those classic jazz records of my youth. Someone at their arts department cut letters to ribbons and designed wonderful record covers with those fragmented glyphs. I recently had a look at my music collection and rediscovered these letters. One of the classic display types of the 19th century, an Egyptian with bracketed serifs. There are many variants of this face and its uses are many, this a modified version lacking the teardrop or ball terminals on a, c, f, g, j, r, f, y.

Preto Semi is an experiment. It is an attempt to create a readable type for text point sizes (other than sans-serif and serif). Preto Semi is not a Sans with added serifs or Serif with serifs removed. The use of the serifs is redefined and used for other purpose(s). The serifs became the extension of the stroke, they help to solve the spacing problem of sans-serif types and they use the primary function of serifs – keeping the eye on the baseline and emphasize the horizontal rhythm of the lines of text. Preto Semi is intended for magazines and editorial design, as other members of Preto family. Preto is an extensive type family, which explores the function of serifs on readability and legibility. Preto consist of three subfamilies: Sans, Semi and Serif. Preto is designed for multilingual typesetting. All of the subfamilies have equal gray value but different texture which can be use to differentiate languages. Preto sub-families have two text weights and two bold styles (Regular -> Bold, Medium -> Black). Every weight has a companion Italic style as well.

In 2007-8, Carolyn Puzzovio developed this OpenType typeface: Lagoon which is based on an Armenian model from the Mechitarist monastery, Venice, 1810. This project was supported by a grant from the AHRC (Arts & Humanities Research Council, UK) and won a first prize in the Granshan 08 type design competition. Oſten, Armenian digital types are designed to match the forms of Latin type characters and ‘Latinized’, by uprighting the forms; truncating ascenders and descenders and raising the x-height – but in this case the Latin characters in the OpenType font have been designed to blend in with the traditional Armenian proportions which are based on cursive forms – also incorporating some of the quirky shapes from the original model. Faithfully following the original created difficulties of ‘clashing’ characters, particularly those with long descenders, so the font contains over 100 alternative characters in the Armenian part, which will normally substitute automatically where necessary. The sloping lower case characters and upright capitals are traditional in Armenian – capitals are used less in the Armenian language. Three new characters for the Armenian unicode range are included: the Armenian dram (currency) symbol; the eternity symbol; and the index number symbol. This font which will be one of the first OpenType fonts to incorporate these newly unicoded characters.

A completely square typeface. And wide. It is all futuristic and fast. I have redesigned the uppercase D (which was identical to the O), V and Y - and also a couple of the lowercase letters: a narrower r, a more identifiable t and f and weight corrections to the v, x and z. Once upon a time, in the days BC (that's Before Computers) there lived a very talented group of men and women whose job it was to render ads by hand. So skillful were these people that some say it was possible to actually identify the typefaces that the layout artists were emulating. Their renderings were swift and slick, no time for detail as it was necessary to do a whole bunch of variations, usually within ridiculous deadlines. Their only tools: bullet-tip markers and bond paper - often mistakes resulted but no time to re-do and white paint was totally unacceptable - just let the slipups be. Here's a simulation of their craft, we don't really know what typeface this was supposed to represent… any ideas?
