Gandur is a display textura in three weights, split into two families: Alte — the German word for old — and New . Gandur was inspired by other geometric texturas, specially Max Bittrof’s Element (1933). The design began by adhering to a strict hexagonal grid, but during its development, slowly moved from a purely geometric to a more pen-based design (this is especially true in the heaviest weights). The differences between Alte and New are essentially morphological, with reflections in the character set and OpenType features. Gandur New has a more humanistic, contemporary structure and is more ‘romanized’ then Alte. Gandur New also features small capitals. Eckhardt Bold JNL continues a series of sign painter-inspired type designs and is named in honor of the late Al Eckhardt, a talented sign man who was a good friend of Jeff Levine for about 18 years until his passing. The font is available in both regular and oblique versions and was inspired by an example found in the 1928 edition of E.C. Mattthews' "How to Paint Signs and Sho' Cards". Both squat and wide for maximum use in wall and window applications, the original name for the design is "Heavy Plug". Plug was the sign painter's term at the time for describing this type of letter form.

Harlem's Cotton Club was an "exclusive, whites only" club; both famous for its talent and shows, yet infamous for hiring black acts but not allowing black patronage. On the sheet music, the show title was hand lettered in a bold, slightly stylized fashion which became the basis for Rhythmic Revue JNL; available in both regular and oblique versions.

RensGazet is a decorative blackletter typeface with elaborate upper-case letters and condensed lower-case characters. It was inspired by the masthead of a short-lived weekly newspaper, The Rensselaer Gazette, which was published from 1857 until 1860. I could not find any existing digitized fonts that replicated this old typeface, so I decided to create an interpretation of it. I had samples of few letters in large point sizes and a number of others at a small point size, though these were blurry and not sharply defined. As a result, this typeface is undoubtedly considerably different from the original. Also, my spacing is much tighter than that in the source samples.

Goth icon and Saturday Night Live voice-over talent, Nicole Blackman grew up surrounded by design; her dad and her sister are architects, her mom is a retired fashion designer and her grandfather invented clip art. “No lie, Volk Clip Art in NJ,” she says. “Herb Lubalin designed his logo!” Sharing her grandfather’s fondness for fonts, Ms. Blackman created this alphabet. The Terminus typeface is an exploration of what occurs to letterforms when flip-disc display and variable-message signs begin to malfunction. Whether caused by analog or computer error, there is a mechanical beauty and randomness in the deterioration of the forms. Dresser's wild take on this concept purposely pushes the limits of legibility along with incorporating historical bits and pieces from blackletter and uncial script forms into this modern digital grid. OpenType font features provide the user with four options to use the typeface. Simply load the default Terminus for a surprisingly legible breakdown of digital characters. Select “Contextual Alternates” for a random selection of altered forms from the 994 glyphs included in the font. With the Glyph Palette open, manually select from the five full character sets to create your own unique settings. Lastly, choose “Stylistic Alternates” for an extreme test of legibility. It's been a while since I named a font after a sheep, so I figured it was about time. The Blue Sheep, or Naur (Pseudois nayaur), is actually an existing species of sheep. It is found in the Himalayas and is a major food for the very rare snow leopard. Peter Matthiessen wrote a book about it called The Snow Leopard. My Blue Sheep font is not rare, nor threatened. It is an uplifting text font. It is very legible and fun to use and will keep you bleating for more. Comes with a flock of diacritics.

The font was inspired by the persistent demands of editors for scripts which actually looked like real handwriting, a lot of historical fiction projects and a love of maps. While making a map for a prequel to Treasure Island I decided to make a font from the lettering of some Caribbean maps of the period. The glyphs are all hand drawn vector outlines which although very legible and consistent in style carry the variation and irregularity you expect from handwriting. This font has been featured on maps for books by authors such as Peter V. Brett, Mark Lawrence and Michael Crichton.

Eckhardt Signwork JNL was inspired by visual images collected by two great nostalgia sites: www.forgotten-ny.com and www.norelevance.com. The vintage signage photographed and saved for posterity on both sites reflect an age when hand-crafted work was the rule, rather than the exception [as is today]. Although somewhat limited in scope, this font can best be used for retro or nostalgic embellishments in ads or design work. There's also a generous amount of blank panels to insert your own copy for special projects. As with previous typefaces in this series, the font is named in honor of the late Al Eckhardt, owner of Allied Signs in Miami, Florida - a talented sign man and Jeff Levine's good friend for 18 years.

Inspired on Cuban posters by the talented and prolific graphic artist Eduardo Muñoz Bachs, Transmogrifier was hand painted with a thin brush, using loose, fast strokes. This font is packed with lots of contextual and stylistic alternates that automatically transmogrifies the letters as you write, when using opentype savvy programs. It's also possible to pick the alternates by hand and set the text the way you like better. The choice is yours, and there are really plenty of alternates to choose from and create original handlettered-looking designs. The font also brings a rough set of pictures based in charcoal sketches from Shniedewend & Lee Company, 1888. These were painted with the same thin brush as the letters, making it a natural complement. So let the transmogrification begin!

Once upon a time, in the days BC (that's Before Computers) there lived a very talented group of men and women whose job it was to render ads by hand. So skillful were these people that some say it was possible to actually identify the typefaces that the layout artists were emulating. Their renderings were swift and slick, no time for detail as it was necessary to do a whole bunch of variations, usually within ridiculous deadlines. Their only tools: bullet-tip markers and bond paper - often mistakes resulted but no time to re-do and white paint was totally unacceptable - just let the slipups be. Here's a simulation of their craft, we don't really know what typeface this was supposed to represent… any ideas?
