Hi, I realize this is a tall order considering there are many custom and proprietary fonts made everyday but I was wondering if there's a font identification tool that can process images to see what font they're using (say if it's a standard windows or photoshop or freetype font, etc)
Something to save time when you have to edit text in an image but you don't have the original image source file...
Thanks

Yes, most fonts are with snow. :(
Do it for yourself in Corel Draw 11:
First hit Ctrl+Q to convert text to bezier.
Second: stroke with the tool no. 1 over the parts that you want to be icy.
Third: take tool no. 2 and drag the nodes .
See screenshot.

Sorry to butt in here, but Corel is actually a fairly decent draw program. This is coming from a hardcore Illustrator user too.
The distortion on the example posted can be done in Corel quite easily. Using the Envelope tool, it doesn't need to be Converted to Curves, just select it, select the Envelope tool, select the Putty setting for the tool and arc it as necessary.
And to be honest, Corel has become an industry standard software for graphic design for screenprinting, and for alot of sign shops. Part of the reason for this is it's versatility and ease of use. The other part comes from the fact that it has been used by alot of people at home, and they can give art to printers without going through a design house.
I use it at my current job, because that's what they had used for years.
I will admit though, for the really tough stuff I use Illustrator (which I have on my laptop for just such occasions), it simply can't be beaten.

Yes, handy little tool. But only for Windfruit, not for apples, I'm afraid. There is an expensive apple thingie but that is very slow, matching some 8.000 fonts in, they claim, 10 minutes - so that can easily be 12 to 13 minutes. I can do 20.000 in 4+ but then I still need to compare visually. Accuracy is, like with WTF, not always very good.
But, only for windfruit.

The people like us, who are in design or development, are often facing a big problem in choosing right font. As the internet has many free download sources so we have thousands of fonts in your PC. Once I used to face problem to find a good front from my huge collection. But it took ages long time as I didn’t have any Font Explorer. Finally I found a cool tool called “FontExpert 2007” and it’s really great. That’s why I wanted to share this cool tool with my friends.
You can easily download it from here: http://www.proximasoftware.com/fontexpert/
And if you have a better one then feel free to share with us :-)

The link you gave links to an illegal copy. That is something that is 'not-done' here. I have replaced your link with a link to a legal trial download.

Geez, Laurie - you're such a writer!!! Maybe Alex should think of opening a "How-To" or "Tips and tricks" section of this site. Every word you say is 100% right and I agree. One point tho : when I pointed VectorMagic, there was no response from Andrew - you people should at least take a look at the suggestions others made. If you want, we can try out this - send me a bitmap file of your original design for one character and I will see how it behaves in VectorMagic - and I will return it back to you, so you can decide whether the tool is right for you. I have no idea how you do your bitmap to vector conversions, do you make your original designs by hand (I mean, on paper with a spray, for example) or entirely in Photoshop. But we can try it, right?
