The Generic Typeface Collection is a series of sans-serif typefaces inspired by the craftsmanship of graphic design, typesetting, and printing in the analogue era – before Adobe, Macintosh computers and desktop publishing – when dinosaurs ruled the earth. With the use of various typesetting apparatuses or dry transfer type, photo copiers, and shooting layouts and paste-ups to film, the printed results was not as exact, precise and predictable as it is today. When examining old prints, it is difficult not to like the way that characters in over- or underexposed film have a special type of vibe to them that is often sadly lost in today’s pursuit of total perfection. Encouraged by this, I saw a need for a collection of typefaces that are non-clinical and non-conformist, and some that are coarse, rough and distorted – errors that might come from poor exposure when put on film, enlargements from small point texts, or maybe quality loss from successive generations of photocopies. Or all of the above. This is an attempt to incorporate spirit and personality into a set of typefaces without losing distinction. You might call it a homage to non-perfection. I call it human. The Generic Typeface Collection consists of 11 fonts divided into four series. The three standard series – the Formal Release series, the Coarse Copy series, and the Rough Display series – all contain three fonts each. First published in 1939 by Stempel, Renner Antiqua is a classic serif text typeface. Designed by Paul Renner, the father of Futura, this design stands out as strikingly different from his other designs. The letterforms are relatively compact and space saving and the strokes have a strong contrast to look as if made by a pen. This design is extremely distinctive and individualized, but without being overly distracting. Notice many of the small details such as the serifs on the uppercase C, E, and L and the bar at the top of the uppercase A. Also observe the special curve in the bowl of the lowercase b, the dot of the i, and the tail of the y. This design is wonderful for extended amounts of text at 10pt, but the subtle details will be fully appreciated when used larger for titles and display settings.

This modernized rustic Baroque Roman face paraphrases freely its model from the first half of the 18th century. The shape of the letters has been cleared from all unevenness and softness, but has retained its lively expression. It is deliberately rather cooler than the reverently digitized Baroque Roman type faces, since it was necessary to adjust it with regard to the visual experience of the contemporary reader. In addition, it has bold designs and aligning figures, which also considerably extends the range of its application. It is an entirely reliable text type face for the most demanding extensive works. Thanks to its calm expression and excellent legibility it is widely used when printing series of professional literature.

The geometry of Paul Renner’s sans letterforms was tempered by optical correction to follow earlier typeface proportions, with capitals close to old-style forms, yet still retaining the spirit of the New Typography. His early experimental characters were included as alternatives in the sans which was to become the Futura released by Bauer in 1927–30. Unusually, old style figures also appeared in his early versions but they too were soon discarded. Foundry Architype Renner as a new four weight family has been developed from the original Renner Regular and Bold, created by The Foundry for the first Architype Collections in the early 1990s. This new family features the old style figures and the experimental elements.

One of the earliest fonts published by Canada Type was Almanac, Phil Rutter's digitization of Imre Reiner's 1957 calligraphic typeface, London Script. In 2007, when the font was revisited for an update, it was shown that it too light for applications under 24 pt, and too irregular for applications over 64 pt. So the face was redigitized from scratch, using larger originals. This new digitization maintains a soft contour and, slightly darker and steadier stroke, and much better outlines for use at both extremes of scaling. Language support was also greatly expanded, and many alternates and ligatures were added to the redigitized character set. The name was also changed to Reiner Hand, to better reflect the origins of the design. Reiner Hand is soft and irregular jolts from a calligraphy master's hand. In a very Reineresque fashion, most characters include the one finishing stroke that makes professional calligraphers pause and ponder this additional touch to a letter's personality. Reiner Hand comes in all popular formats. The TrueType and PostScript versions come with 2 fonts, one of them loaded with alternates and ligatures. The OpenType version combines both fonts into one, and includes features for intelligent substitution in software that supports advanced typography. Language support includes Western, Central and Eastern European character sets, as well as Baltic, Esperanto, Maltese, Turkish, and Celtic/Welsh languages.

While watching a 1920s Charlie Chaplin short film, Jeff Levine was taken with the unusually modern looking lettering of the title cards in that silent movie. The lettering was not only right for its time, but could also be adapted to both Art Deco and Techno applications. From this classic film comes the font Two Reeler JNL, a bit of yesterday with an eye toward the future.

Antique X Condensed is a condensed slab serif font found with the pages of a Rob Roy Kelly book of wood type designs. It was introduced around 1840 by Wells and Webb, and the example served as the model for General Merchandise JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.
