Calligraphy, be it done with the broad-edge pen, brush, or other tools, has been fundamental in the development of Pollen. The shapes of the diagonal letters are based on a less formal calligraphic model, but still uses the broad edge pen. ­The letters were then subject to a further process of pencil drawing and digital re-interpretation, which gave them the final shape. The designs of “e” and “c” are derived from drawings made with only one continuous line, with the pencil always touching the paper. The letters “g” and “y” express the intention to bring informal elements to a typeface intended for long text reading, usually characteristic of casual writing. I have always loved gazing at the stars. Too bad that you don’t get to see a true starry night these days - mostly because of light pollution. Starlight Lovers is a messy serif. It is hand painted, using a brush and Chinese ink, so the edges may be a bit rough. In my opinion, this adds to the font’s character! Starlight Lovers is an ideal font for (Christmas) cards, book covers, posters and product packaging. Comes with a milky way of diacritics as well!

Chunkie is a simple serif experiment going for minimal width and maximum height. I made it into my display version of OpenType Pro, but mainly it was a vehicle for me to try out some more extreme serif ideas and glyph shapes. The solutions for the lowercase a and e are unique, for example. The double g ligature is a fun solution. I like the solution for the @, but I’m not sure how it will be received. That being said, it turned into a useful dark display face with a small x-height.

Jackass is a wacky four weight display design that plays with a randomization feature to offer a large range of layout solutions for each word. With added ligatures and a selection of number styles, this typeface is a funky solution that will constantly surprise! Included in the family are two complimentary dingbat fonts, Chickenz and Framez.

Cadence was designed for a computer consulting company called Shamrock Solutions. The logo needed a Celtic font for the word "shamrock" that complimented the tech font used for the word "solutions." Most Celtic fonts didn't hold up well next to the tech font, which led to the creation of Cadence. Although inspired by Irish designs, Cadence is a sharp departure from traditional Celtic typefaces and in most contexts the inspiration isn't immediately obvious.
