This font was specifically created for my husband. He teaches 5th grade and wanted a font that was legible enough for students to read but still playful enough to add a touch of whimsy to his classroom. Legible enough for body text but fun enough for titles.

Payson JNL is based on a vintage sans serif wood type from the 1800s.

A free flowing and loose handwritten style, with the occasional double lines - and with quite elaborate and decorative initials. Feminine, but sloppy - an interesting combination. I have regularized the stroke thicknesses and modified a couple of the letterforms to make them less ambiguous. Some kerning and spacing completes the workover, together with our extensive language support. Abaddon has been one of our most popular fonts since it was first released in the mid-90s. It's based on lettering by Alphons Mucha with some modernization.

Blackthorn draws on the tradition of Art Nouveau font design with some elements of western or circus style fonts, but an overall effect which may have more in common with the psychedelic era than anything else. It has a feel somewhat akin to some of the lettering of Alphons Mucha particularly the Abaddon and Gehenna fonts. It's very stylized and kind of wicked looking. You can see where the name comes from if you note the thorn-like spurs on the upper part of each character.

The concept of a bold connected script with a hand lettered feel has been on my bucket list for decades. I imagined a pretentious, ornate, swashy look, a variety of word-end embellishments, heaps of ligatures and underscores. It took a weekend workshop on Python Scripting at Type@Cooper in San Francisco reinforcing the smarts of Opentype to make it happen. Hand drawn on paper using broad pen strokes for reference, the design was the easy part. The real work was in the back-end and self-imposed rigorous testing.
