This is a perfect font for historical or fantasy titles. It is influenced by ancient Nordic runes. the strokes flare slightly, to a concave terminal for a finely carved appearance. There are two sets of capitals in PR-Vanaheim-DC (Dual Capitals); one set of narrow letters, more closely related to Runic forms, and one set which includes wider and circular letters, which can be freely combined with the narrow letters for the variety associated with hand lettering. There is one version with dots placed in the centre of large counters and one version without the dots. The broad caps character set includes characters which allow for tight spacing; a dropped L, and a tall T. There are also two different lowercase sets, one modern, and one archaic, all of which can be freely mixed to fine tune the appearance of your text. Emeritus is born from the carved letters found on buildings and monuments in Washington, DC. Muscular and low contrast but with assymetrical flared serifs that soften its stately presence. Small caps, inline caps, chiseled characters, and multiple weights and numerals offer an array of typographic voices. Notably academia, military, monumental, automotive, logos, signage, and so on.

While strolling through the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, I came across a delightful painting by Wassily Kandinsky entitled “Succession”. Many of the forms seemed to me typographic so, of course, a font followed, and this is it: wild, wacky and delightfully different. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin and 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan) character sets.

The 1923 Barnhart Brothers & Spindler specimen book called this typeface "Cardstyle", and suggested its use at small sizes for business cards. It also work quite well in large sizes when a warm, casual antique feeling is called for. Named for a river that flows through Washington, DC. In 1995, when indie rock hipness was just reaching its pique, Chank was really into Jawbox, a post-punk band from DC. It was their music he was listening to when he made this font for the Space Ghost web site. The band broke up in 1997, but the font named in their honor lives on. This font family includes Jawbox, Jawbox Chanky, and Jawbreaker.

Joy Redick designed Blackoak, a big and heavy Egyptienne-sytle titling slab serif face, in 1990. The extremely robust style of the characters in this typeface was consciously distorted; creating letterforms that appear flattened and stretched, like a rubber band. Blackoak is drawn in the style of old wood tpes, just like those that one envisions when one thinks of the large, decorative posters that once filled Wild West America. The wood type collection of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC acted as a primary source of inspiration for this design. True to its rooks, Blackoak is meant for use exclusively in headlines in very large point sizes, or for logos and other corporate advertising purposes.

Raljon is a display typeface created by designer and lettering artist Mark Robinson. It is a collaboration between the Mmarkk and Teen-Beat Graphica visual design studios. This single font was created over a period of five years. Mark took great care in finessing each character and making sure that each character would stand on its own and yet simultaneously, be an integral part of the whole. The typeface is inspired by Gothic letterforms, horror novels, speed metal bands of the 1980s, techno and electronic music of the 1990s, and Washington, DC football teams whose stadiums lie in the Maryland suburbs. While it doesn’t have multiple weights, Raljon does have a deep depth and breadth. It has a seemingly endless amount of alternate characters and ligatures. There are nine letter Ms, eight letter As and Fs, seven Rs and Ts, and the list goes on. Even the figures have alternates.

Spy Royal is a junctionless script typeface and comes in 6 styles. It’s a hybrid between script and so called streamline fonts. The origins are based on an advertising by Japan Airlines, dated around 1954, offering flights to San Francisco, Honolulu and Okinawa in the new DC-6B “Pacific Courier” airplane. Only the letters for the words “JAPAN AIR LINES” were used, so that the creative part was to reimagine a full font out of just a handful of uppercase letters. Originally released in 2004, Spy Royal was now undergoing a major rework and is now republished with additional styles like shadow-lines and 3D-shadow. Its charm is manifold, we think everything related to cars, racing, hot rod, vintage, cocktails, retro, restaurants, gasoline and of course airlines will look great in Spy Royal. Spy Royal includes alternate characters, ligatures and West European diacritics.
