im looking for a freebie font similar to arial rounded. something super simple and smooth edged but not quite like most the futuristic here. any suggestions?

I really like this font, it's got all of the nice features of Myriad, but a little softer (notice the slopes). And it's a nice weight, slightly lighter than a Myriad Black.
I tried Identifont, but it came up with ITC Legacy, which is definitely not it :-).

I'm apparently too young for Peter and Jane[/i:2bacd312a7] -- sadly, no doubt. Since I'm not sure what you want, I'll just try to get closer.
Are you looking for a specific font, or just any suitable 'rounded' one? If you are trying to match a font, can you provide us with any pictures? That would be the best help you could give.
Since you've tried Tahoma and Arial, I'm guessing you're looking for a sans-serif. It wouldn't be Verdana, would it? Verdana is much more rounded than Arial, but comparable to Tahoma.
Those're some of the questions I need to know before I -- or any of the others here -- can really help. Unless, of course, they know all about Peter and Jane[/i:2bacd312a7]. I daresay they might.

This was done 200 dpi at 320 pt, anti alias smooth.Then some gaussian blur, adjust the levels to b/w and then resize to 404 pixels wide at 200 dpi.

I'm looking to match the text of the subtitle in this banner:

It's similar to Serpentine Bold Oblique overall, but different in lots of little ways. Has anyone seen it before? Or do you think it's a custom job?
