A Venetian serif in 6 styles The Apolline typeface family was created by Jean François Porchez as a means to study the transition from Renaissance writing into the first printing types. Rather than sticking to the method commonly used these days for the creation of revivals of Jenson or Bembo types, it seemed more interesting to try and get in the same mindset as those exceptional designers during this pivotal period in the history of typography. Thus Apolline is an exploration of the design methods used by people like Nicolas Jenson and his contemporaries for adapting handwriting with its multiple occurrences (a, a, a, b, b, b…) into single, unique signs (a, b…). Initially Jean François made drawings modelled after his own calligraphy. They were done at a very small size on tracing paper (2 cm high for the capitals) to preserve the irregularity of human handwriting. Besides emphasising the horizontal parts of the letter forms, the serifs were designed asymmetrically to reinforce the rhythm of the writing. The final drawings were produced at a large size (10 cm high for the capitals) to allow for subtle optimisation of specific details. The very narrow and fluid Apolline italic Influenced by various concepts for an ideal italic by Van Krimpen, Gill, etc. Apolline italic was designed at 8° degrees. Although the structure of the letterforms were informed by chancery scripts, the italic has full serifs like the roman. Very narrow and fluid, its unique design creates a good contrast when used in combination with its upright counterparts. Thanks to the presence of the serifs similar to roman typefaces it sets very neatly in large sizes. The next step was digitising the drawings with Ikarus (the pre-Bézier-curves era) to create the final roman and italic fonts. Two years later, when the family was expanded to six series the same method was used, this time with Fontographer. This was necessary for correcting a few problems caused by the conversion to Bézier outlines, and to add intermediate weights. Before the advent of feature-rich OpenType, quality type families consisted of several separate fonts for each weight to provide users with various sets of numerals, an extended ligature set and alternates, ornaments, and so on. This typeface finds a perfect balance between technical excellence, careful design of letter forms for extended reading, and a measured dose of charm and personality. Calligraphy, be it done with the broad-edge pen, brush, or other tools, has been fundamental in the development of Pollen. Its influence is clearly visible in the construction of the top serifs contrasting the curved bottom serifs and the fluid aspect of terminals and tails, such as on “g” and “r”. The shapes of the diagonal letters are based on a less formal calligraphic model, but still uses the broad edge pen. ­The letters were then subject to a further process of pencil drawing and digital re-interpretation, which gave them the final shape. The designs of “e” and “c” are derived from drawings made with only one continuous line, with the pencil always touching the paper. The letters “g” and “y” express the intention to bring informal elements to a typeface intended for long text reading, usually characteristic of casual writing. Pollen consists of 3 basic styles with an extended OpenType Pro character set and large language support, perfectly serving the most common typographic needs.

Apollo is oddly one of the lesser known typefaces of Frutiger, perhaps due to the extreme fame of some of his other works, like the typefaces Frutiger® and Univers®. Stylistically, the very legible and harmonic Apollo is an old face. Frutiger designed it especially for the photosetting used at the time. The Apollo typeface family consists of the weights roman and semibold and their respective italics as well as expert sets. Frutiger optimized the relation between the two weights so that the roman is robust enough to present a legible text on soft paper but light enough to contrast with the semibold. The clear, elegant Apollo is perfect for headlines as well as long texts.

This hand-lettered italic script is another versatile font produced by Jeff Marshall. Named after the late Ron Aplin, who mentored Jeff as an apprentice sign writer early in his career. This font includes 19 unique ligatures and 15 alternate special ending glyphs.

For several years I have been thinking about the design of a type family that explores, on the one hand, the modernist aesthetic that we know, from the Alphabet "a.r." designed by Władysław Strzemiński, and on the other, to the multiscript pre-war Warsaw. This is how the idea of creating the Polin Sans typeface was born. After researching on geometric variants of the Cyrillic alphabet, I was inspired by the text "Towards an open layout: A letter to Volodya Yefimov". I was intrigued by the fact that circular forms, which we are mostly familiar with in the Bulgarian Cyrillic, can be implemented in the classical version, without disrupting the reading process. At the same time, while working on typoteka.pl, I was fascinated by the Hebrew typeface jaffa, published by the Idźkowski & Sk-a foundry, which at some points looks like the Hebrew equivalent of the Alphabet "a.r.". Ben Nathan from Israel joined the project and was responsible for creating his native script. The idea of creating a multiscript family expanded to include Greek and Vietnamese. As a result, Polin Sans is a historical journey through the nooks and crannies of Polish modernism, which was created by people with diverse cultural backgrounds. The Polin Sans family was designed by Mateusz Machalski and Ben Nathan with the support of Michał Gorczyca and Małgorzata Bartosik.

Greene and Hollins of Wolverhampton were a rather smart gentleman’s outfitter, much frequented by my late grandfather and altogether redolent (in memory and actuality) of a bygone age of retail service and respect. I believe they’re out of business now, but we’re rather pleased to offer them this very small if rather random memorial. Greene and Hollins is a set of seven display typefaces, with uniform metrics, which can be overlaid to create multi-coloured ‘engraved’ effects. Also ideal to recreate traditional sign-writing, garment labels, signage and anything else where a period flare is required.

Please Note: as this is a picture-only font, there are no latin alpha/numeric glyphs. Each wood type manufacturer had their own selection of original Logotypes or Catchwords designs. These are taken right from the original source material, an extremely rare 1910 catalog of an English wood type maker called Day & Collins in London. As the name says it, these words are intended to attract attention, to spice up posters, packaging or advertisement designs. I made these available for the digital age, leaving the original texture of printed wood type at the highest detail possible.

Ornaments 4 are based on the Amsterdam Apollo and Gracia ornaments and the Amsterdam Crous-Vidal dashes (designed by Crous-Vidal).

A 1934 advertisement for the Roney Plaza Hotel at 23rd Street and Collins Avenue on Miami Beach yielded the inspiration for Tropical Tourist JNL. While this wonderful example of Art Deco lettering survived, sadly the original Roney was torn down around 1969 and replaced with a modern apartment house/condos bearing the same name.
