Maria Martina Schmitt was born in Vienna, Austria in 1950. Since 1998, she has been working as a freelance designer, focusing on cultural collateral, economic publications, illustration, type design, and logo design. Airam blends contemporary legibility with historic blackletter forms, creating a contemporary text face that speaks to the old European past. Airam certainly appears darker than most other contemporary text faces. Airam’s letterforms are slightly broken, too. They display angled joints in lieu of smooth curves. This “broken” aspect actually aids legibility at smaller point sizes. While Airam may not be suitable for setting whole books or newspapers, this font will add a splendid touch to short tracts of small text. Additionally, Airam looks superb in large headlines.

I designed Mirage using ink and a calligraphy brush to evoke the writing styles of ancient and exotic civilizations. After completing the project, it was filed and forgotten. About 15 years later, I was sifting through some of my old art files and found a "photostat" of the entire character set... a truly a magnificent archeological discovery. Then I thought, hey, maybe it's day has come. Why not share it with the world?... a completely digitized version for the new millennium. The 1965 film “Mirage” had its titles and credits hand lettered in a simple, thin sans serif with rounded corners and an overall square design. This is now available digitally as Office Work JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

A short font for short people* La Jefa is very, very loosely based on a Christmas card I received years ago from my boss at the time. Designed to capture that personalized touch, it's a hand lettered font with a short x-height and ample spacing. Although all of the letters are lowercase, the uppercase provides a unique set of characters that can be mixed in for a more natural handwritten feel. *also people of tall or average height

Typewriters are becoming scarce, but fonts designed to look like they came from typewriters aren't. In this case, however, Gripewriter is meant to look as if it were typed on a textured paper and enlarged, emphasizing flaws and lending it a funkier, grungier look than your average typewriter face. This was originally called Hypewriter until it was pointed out that a font already existed with that name. The current name is a better fit, anyway, since Gripewriter looks like it might hold a grudge.

Not your average monospaced typeface, Base Mono flourishes with several handsome OT features mostly found exclusively in text fonts. Despite the geometric and techno feel of the initial roman version, the cursive version is heavily influenced by traditional Finnish weaving and folk art! The contradiction is taken further by inclusion of such classical features as small capitals and lower case figures, usually found in slightly more traditional fonts. Really, there is nothing stupid about this font. In some strange and weird way, I just thought that the name sounded like something eye-catching - in the same way that the font is eye-catching! It may look like your average comic font, but it's not! I carefully put a lot of funk, twist, comic and a spoonful of pizzadude into each and every letter. The result is a bouncy crazy looking comic font. Oh, I almost forgot - I topped the letters with a spoonful of grafitti mixed with the sounds of a party...that's the recipe for this lovely multilingual font! :)

Take The Money is a wonky all caps font, made with a Sharpie pen. The name was inspired by something I read in the newspaper: apparently a Danish artist received €72.000 from a museum to create two works of art. The works of art should depict the average income of someone from Austria and someone from Denmark - in real money. The museum then loaned him the €72.000 and told him he'd receive €3.300 for his work. The artist decided that €3.300 would merely cover the costs, so he delivered two empty canvases and called the work: Take The Money And Run.
