Yes. Some people are to lazy to fill out the
copyright fields in their own fonts. But forgers
do this too. I always read the copyright-fields
in fonts I wanna use. Sometimes I found fonts on
CDs called free. But the copyright information
contains other declarations.

If there is any doubt I put the fonts on the side
and look for free versions or commercial versions
with license.

Btw: To repair a mangled font You need time. I
only spend this time in fonts with GPL or OFL.
I can redistribut this fonts legaly and no one
have to do this work again. I always throw away
mangled fonts with an unfree license.
