Here are the 5 matches I got:

Newhouse DT Medium
http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/dtptypes/newhouse-dt/medium/

AG Old Face Regular
http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/berthold/ag-old-face-be/regular/

AG Old Face BQ-Regular
http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/berthold/ag-old-face-bq/regular/

P22 St GSchrift Pro
http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/ihof/p22-st-g-schrift/pro/

P22 St G Schrift Two
http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/ihof/p22-st-g-schrift/two/

They're all pretty close, but some of them are better matches to certain letters than others (i.e. j, g, and d).

All right, I should have recognized this, but I cleaned up your image, and I got a match that I think you'll like:

Close, Justin, indeed. But, alas, no cigar. The font in the pict is the Grotesque. Look at the J, g, 2 and a.

Thank you, kkat, I was having the hardest time getting the j and g to match anything. I guess that's why you're the expert!

You're welcome Justin. When you restore a pict, one or two letters often are enough. Just choose those that have a typical shape, in this case the candidates are J and 2 which to me shout 'I am Grotesque', using the Swallow's means ... :)

Just a minor note from those who don’t use technical instruments. Please don’t hesitate to show so many letters as are clearly visible. And tell something about where you find the sample. Because there is sometimes hidden the clue to the ID.

And that goes to all users, please.

Fully agree. My note was on restoring a pict as it makes little sense to try to restore the whole text when there are some (somewhat) unusual letters in the text.

About the use of 'technical instruments', like computers, most commercial fonts are known or easy to find, the freebees, often distorted, are more difficult to ID. The categories here and there do help but it is often quicker to run a mach ...
