No, unfortunately I'm not being involved in a new project for a daily newspaper. It was possible some months ago, but the people who were starting it changed their minds and are actually thinking about an online daily.

However, what typefaces would you use for titles, and which for text body, subcaption and such?

I've always supported the use of Melior (http://www.linotype.com/1222/melior-family.html) for the body, while a traditional Franklin Gothic (http://www.linotype.com/463/franklingothic-family.html) would have worked out nice for the titles and boxes.

So, what would be your pick(s)?

Well, that would be pretty obvious choice, I think, but I couldn't resist: Le Monde Journal (http://www.typofonderie.com/alphabets/view/LeMondeJournal)

for the body as well as the complimentary Le Monde Sans (http://www.typofonderie.com/alphabets/view/LeMondeSans) for the headlines.

A good alternative to Franklin Gothic could be ARS Maquette (http://www.fontshop.com/fonts/downloads/arstype/maquette/) or Shinn's Brown Gothic (http://www.veer.com/products/typedetail.aspx?image=SHT0000007) or FF Bau (http://www.fontshop.com/search/?q=FF%20Bau) or Rian Hughes Paralucent (http://www.fontshop.com/search/?q=Paralucent) or FF Milo (http://www.fontshop.com/search/?q=FF%20Milo)

As for the body, I'm a bit out of suggestions, besides Le Monde Journal.

Just a question ... how would we all happen to see these nice types? Or would it be only for IE slaves? You are not suggesting to have the whole thing as a pict, are you?

Edit:

Or are you giving all these away for free?

well, KK: as far as I understand, he was asking about suggestions for PRINT issues, not the online version. But in fact you can setup a headlines (at least) of an online newspaper in certain typeface by using a little flash and sIFR (http://www.mikeindustries.com/sifr/)....and I'm not giving anything for free :) or I just misunderstood what you meant to say

Yes, Koeiekat, I was talking about printed papers, willing to talk about newspaper layout and all that kind of stuff.

I just don't understand how people are migrating to the digital version of daily newspapers, as for that; I can't read them, they are much worse in design as their paper counterparts and... well, you can't show your broadsheet having breakfast. Is reading a laptop – even a 17" Mac – as sexy? Don't think so.

Sorry friends, I thought it was about on-line. Thanks Ivan for the very interesting link, did not know about that. But then if humans don't know everything how could a Kat?

Could be a nice interim solution but I am sitting and waiting for css3. Doesn't solve everything either - embedding not allowed for example - but it would make life easier. Hurry-up w3!

Oh, that's because of all the darn redirecting thingy of the fontshop-sites worldwide. Jürgen siebert of fontshop.de says about that »bug« (german):

International version in short:

»Yes, I have to admit that our webshop is from the last century, but we are working hard on a complete new architecture ? If you want to link to a font: take the context-menu option of the font like "Open frame in a new window" and link that.«

But I don't know how that could work out.

If you want to see the samples, you have to open the fontshop-link twice. Forst time it opens the redirect to your local site, second time it opens it to the original link. Or see it at identifont.com or elsewhere.

Not very comfortable. Until they have relaunched their site I won't link to them. Sorry Jürgen and Erik.

Swallow ... how come I think this was supposed to go to the typophile WTF thread? Or ... am I totally confused?

*headscratch* The typophile WTF-thread? Hmm...

Ah, now I know, I see the hands clapping.

No the quote comes from here: Juergens comment at the bottom from 8. Mai 2007 um 12.48 Uhr

OT: How comes that all the Umlauts here are wiped away? This wasn't the case in former days.
