I downloaded 'Gift Wrapped' font (which I was hoping to use in a birthday greeting). It seemed to have downloaded fine when I opened it in my Fonts file, however when I tried to use it in an e-mail (Outlook Express) boxes appeared rather than letters. Can anyone suggest what settings I need to change? Or is it a problem with the font file. Haven't had any trouble with other fonts. And why would it appear to be OK in the 'Fonts' folder?

most likely, the problem is in the font file which might be poorly formatted .ttf file written for older OSs.
