One font -- and it ought to be easy
#1 Posted by recovered on 2003-07-03 22:49:36 | quote |
I ought to know this font -- heaven knows I've seen it before in novels -- but I can't put a name to it. I'm asking mainly to satisfy my curiosity, but of course I wouldn't mind information on where to download a freeware version of the family.

Here's the picture:

(Text isn't mine, except the sig -- it's from an [i:708f51659e]Annie[/i:708f51659e] script.) Thanks in advance!

Hi Liana-

OK, you'd think this one would be easy to pinpoint, but alas, no. Not being able to come up with an exact match (short of going to the very edge of the Earth, so ashamed I am), I have for you three alternatives. Firstly we have Bitstream's Aldine 401, the problems with which, as you can see, are the "y" (it just ain't stumpy enough), and the rather glaring fact that the fontset doesn't include a "curvy" apostrophe. The second is also by Bitstream - Iowan Old Style - a little too soft, plus it's also missing a curvy apostrophe. The last alternative is Aetna JY, which could well be the closest of the three. But once again the "y"s tail is too rounded, and the apostrophe is nowhere near the one in your sample. But, as is the way of things, I'll keep looking for you.

Halfwaytherily,
-Tørnquist

Hey Tørnquist --

Thank you a lot[/i:30dce06782] for your help; I hadn't expected such a great response. I wound up doing the sight search at fonts.com, and I'm reasonably sure it's Minion. For some reason I always have to fall in love with pay fonts. . . . Anyway, I think it's a very close match, but I'd appreciate it if you'd look at it to double-check.

Thanks a lot for your help!
